Lately we’ve been talking an awful lot about the hazards associated with being a world-renowned musician, and it kind of bummed us out. But then Billboard published its annual list of the highest earners in music, which reminded us that being a rock star is actually really awesome.
The singer that woke us all up on Avicii‘s hit record last fall is now “The Man” at VH1. That’s right, Aloe Blacc is the latest You Oughta Know Artist. The R&B singer joins the likes of Adele, Bruno Mars, Estelle and Leona Lewis. All of these performers created a unique blend of pop, R&B and soul, something Blacc is doing on his latest record, Lift Your Spirit (out now).
If you’re not familiar with Blacc, that’s okay because we’ve got you covered with four essential things you need to know about him. For instance, the singer has his eye on Leonardo DiCaprio. “Why,” you might be asking yourself. That’s because Blacc wants the Oscar-nominated actor to portray him in a biopic.
For most of us, being a teenager means slogging through high school, struggling with adolescence and desperately hoping for a hot date for the school dance. However, there are some teenagers out there who are instant musical legends. It didn’t take them years of doing crappy gigs to get to the top; the 20 pop music prodigies on our list wrote and recorded landmark albums before they were even old enough to legally drink.
Let’s get one thing straight: You do NOT mess with Beyonce! She will slice you down with a side-eye so strong your grandchildren will feel it. Hey, she’s not the Queen for nothin’. The lovely, beautiful and talented Mrs. Carter is adored around the world for her music and good deeds, but she’s not afraid to be tough as nails every now and again. We’ve collected 10 of our very favorite diva-tastic moments from over the years. So now, without further ado, here are Beyonce’s shadiest moments!
Michael Jackson tragically passed away back in 2009, and the past five years have yielded plenty of pretenders to the King of Pop’s throne. But 31-year-old Brandon Howard’s case is different. He claims to have irrufitable evidence that he is MJ’s son!
After taking the lead on Avicii‘s hit single, “Wake Me Up,” Blacc is stepping out on this own in a big way. In the new music video for “The Man,” Aloe Blacc channels his inner-Marvin Gaye in a spirited video that captures the social discourse of the early ’70s. The You Oughta Know Artist sat down with VH1 in an exclusive interview to explain the powerful yet beautifully shot imagery in the video.
“This music video is an amalgamation of historic images that remind me of moments in time where there was struggle and triumph,” Blacc says of the video’s theme.
Think about what your grandparents look like and now look at the grandparents that we found in music. You are not going to believe your eyes…
Pharrell Williams became the talk of the Grammys last month with his, errr, “distinctive” Vivian Westwood “mounties” hat. And now on the biggest night in film, Pharrell made headlines once again by auctioning off the hat on eBay. That’s right: you had the chance to be the owner of this historic/hilarious headgear…provided you were willing to shell out a truly bonkers amount of money.
If you haven’t accepted that Pharrell is OG yet, it might be time to start. With his Oscar performance set for this weekend’s award show, you’d be remiss to think anything less about the rapper/producer/all ’round chill guy. He’s an ultimate bas ass, and both his production and performance discographies are a testament to his prowess in the music world and ongoing impact on popular culture.
It’s been said that rock ‘n’roll is a hazardous business. Too many of music’s best and brightest have fallen victim to drug overdoses, murders, plane crashes and other unfortunate events. But then there are those deaths that are so unexpected, so unpredictable, so bizarre, that we’re left scratching our heads even after all these years.
