Now that 2014 is in full swing, it’s time to turn our attention to the music the new year has to offer. And now that VH1 Soul You Oughta Know artist Liv Warfield is about to drop her sophomore album, The Unexpected, 2014 is about to get exponentially funkier.

An Illinois native, Warfield pretty much owned Portland’s R&B scene by the time she was discovered by Prince (yes, that Prince) in 2009. Since then, her career has been in first gear and we have no doubt that 2014 will be her year.

While the robots of Daft Punk, Beyoncé and Jay Z and Taylor-In-Training Kacey Musgraves are out celebrating their wins at tonight’s Grammy Awards, we’re beaming with pride for our very own You Oughta Know family. VH1′s roster of emerging artists past and present were nominated in 17 categories this year, with Lorde and Bruno Mars scooping up big trophies for Song of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Album, respectively.

Gary Clark, Jr. joined the VH1 You Oughta Know family back in November of 2012, shortly after his outstanding major label debut LP, Blak And Blu, dropped. His work earned him a spot in history at the 2014 Grammy Awards as the first person who has EVER been nominated for both Best Rock Song (“Ain’t Messin ‘Round”) AND Best Traditional R&B Performance (“Please Come Home”) in the same year, and this genre-bending musician was able to put his chops on display for millions of viewers across the world tonight.

Lorde can officially no longer say that she’ll never be a royal. The 17-year-old You Oughta Know artist has officially cemented her place as a pop princess with her understated, yet outstanding, Grammy Awards performance of “Royals” tonight. A Great Big World Live Out Their “Rockstar” Dreams Live In Concert

“Rockstar” is the first song on A Great Big World‘s new LP, and its lyrics hold the clues to the title the band chose for their debut album. The band performed this track, along with all of the other cuts that ended up on Is There Anybody Out There?—which, btw, drops tomorrow!—in front of a sold-out (and amped-up) audience at Manhattan’s Highline Ballroom last week.

A Great Big World’s Live Performance Of “Say Something” Will Give You Goosebumps

A Great Big World blew the roof off of Manhattan’s Highline Ballroom last night, playing their new album Is There Anybody Out There? in its entirety in front of a live audience for the first time ever. The album doesn’t officially drop until Tuesday (1/21), but if you were lucky enough to snag a ticket for the sold-out show or you tuned into the VH1 livestream last night, you got to pay witness to a new act really starting to come into its own. But if you happened to miss the show, you’re in luck — we’ll be rolling out clips from last night’s big show over the course of the next couple of days.

A Great Big World Prefers Their Lingerie To Be Silky

When we sit down to chat with the new members of our You Oughta Know family each month, we inevitably end up learning some kooky things about them, (which isn’t surprising considering that the franchise is called “You Oughta Know,” after all!).
