EXCLUSIVE: Lorde “Freaks Out” About The Aging Process On “Ribs”

“This song’s about getting old, which I freak out about.” That’s Lorde, VH1′s current You Oughta Know artist, on her new song “Ribs,” which she debuted at the Greenwich Village club Le Poisson Rouge when she made her North American debut there last month. Considering that Lorde is but 16-years-old, we don’t think that aging is something that she need worry much about, but when the result is something as gorgeous as “Ribs,” we’ll begrudge her on that front (but just this once!).

EXCLUSIVE: Lorde Is Coming For The Crown On Her New Song, “Still Sane (Track 10)”

Lorde, VH1′s September You Oughta Know artist, definitely has an obsession with royalty. She confessed as much to us when our own Meghan O’Keefe interviewed Lorde recently, and taking a close listen to the tracks that make up her upcoming Pure Heroine LP, there are more than a few mentions. That theme is most clearly evident on her hit song “Royals,” but here on her track “Still Sane (Track 10),” which was filmed live at New York City’s Le Poisson Rouge back on August 6, she makes her intentions known: “Hey little boy, I’m coming for the crown.”

EXCLUSIVE: Lorde Has A Winner On Her Hands With This Live Performance Of “Tennis Court”

Lorde, much like her Antipodean (and fellow You Oughta Know) compatriot Gotye, has come out of left field from Down Under and landed one of the biggest surprise singles of the year. However, whereas Gotye was not able to capture the zeitgeist the way that “Somebody I Used To Know” did with any of the other tracks on his Making Mirrors LP, Lorde seems very well set up to avoid one-hit wonder status thanks to the power of her next single, “Tennis Court.”

Passenger Busks His Way To International Stardom

Passenger is VH1′s You Oughta Know artist for the month of August, but before he earned that designation or had a worldwide #1 jam with “Let Her Go,” he made his living busking on the streets of his native United Kingdom and Australia. If you’re unfamiliar with the term “busking,” it involves setting up shop on a street corner, singing your heart out for passersby and hoping they drop some change in your guitar case as they cross your path.

Gin Wigmore Lies About Cheap Jewelry + Other Guiltless Pleasures

615x462

May’s You Oughta Know artist Gin Wigmore doesn’t have guilty pleasures. When you’re a tatted up blonde bombshell with an old soul tone that sounds like Amy Winehouse and Duffy made a baby, you enjoy whatever the hell you want with no shame. Instead, Gin shared several “open pleasures” with us that she enjoys with zero f’s given including, but not limited to: buying cheap jewelry and saying its expensive, and rocking Ellen (yep, that Ellen) on her booty. We’ve got a special Valentine’s Day surprise to share with you, courtesy of our February You Oughta Know artist Olly Murs. Olly Murs Laments A Certain “Troublemaker” In Exclusive You Oughta Know Live Performance

Olly Murs was without new friend Flo Rida during our You Oughta Know shoot, but between his distinctly Brit-ish pronunciation and the improvised moves of his enthusiastic backup dancers, we didn’t even sweat. Olly Murs Has Love For Dr. Dre, Eminem, And Hip-Hop Collaborations

With live renditions of “Angels” and “The Climb” catapulting him to a second-place finish on The X Factor UK, you may not have pegged Olly Murs as a hip-hop fan. “I grew up listening to a lot of rappers and styles of music like Dr. Dre–I’ve got the Chronic, 2001 albums–I’ve got 50 Cent stuff, I’ve got Eminem stuff,” says the big-band enthusiast, proving our February You Oughta Know artist’s own musical tastes are as eclectic as his assortment of vests and bowler hats.

Allen Stone Shows Us Why He Can’t Get No “Sleep” In You Oughta Know Live Performance

We’re quite fond of our January You Oughta Know artist, and it appears that the feeling is mutual. Music Seen: Allen Stone’s Take On Retro-Soul Aims To Keep Us Warm All Winter Long

Allen Stone Music Seen

The weather may be dreary, but things are heating up here at VH1, thanks to the voice of January’s You Oughta Know artist, Allen Stone. The deeply soulful singer-songwriter brings a unique spin to everything from accessories to his blonde-haired, blue-eyed stamp on the rhythm & blues, capitalizing on the crave for funky, retro sound that has been so kind to acts like Amy Winehouse, Adele and Bruno Mars in recent years.

Having honed his performance skills before church pews in small town Washington, Stone has experience winning over crowds and is comfortable taking time to preach to the unconverted. Inspired by—and often compared toStevie Wonder, now he’s giving the likes of Miguel and JT a run for their money in the panty-dropping department thanks to his ability to blissfully distract us from everyday stresses with a rich timbre. His is also a warm and inviting sound that welcomes us in a cozy embrace, and encourages to stay put all winter long.

Ace VH1 photographer Lauren Weissler followed Stone throughout his whirlwind day here in New York City just before the holidays, which included which included a festive stop by Big Morning Buzz Live and some quality catch-up time with his cell phone. Check it out below.
