Sheryl Crow has always had an easygoing, Southern way about her, so her recent foray into country music definitely feels like a natural progression for her as an artist (as opposed to a calculated, careerist maneuver). In fact, her 2002 duet with Kid Rock, “Picture,” was nominated for Vocal Event of the Year at the 2003 Country Music Awards, so she’s by no means a stranger in Nashville circles. Her debut country single, “Easy” —the video of which we’re excited to premiere tonight!— has a laidback feel to it, with its references to skipping a planned vacation in Mexico in favor of an adventure in her own backyard.
Michael Bublé is riding high this week, scoring the #1 spot on the album charts with his latest release, To Be Loved. The Canadian crooner is the special guest on this week’s episode of the VH1 Top 20 Video Countdown, which airs tomorrow starting at 9am and again on Sunday at 8am, and we caught up with him for a few minutes after he spoke to our own Jim Shearer. We taped the interview at midtown Manhattan’s Pulse Karaoke, so we couldn’t resist asking him what song he would sing with his buddies over a few beers. And, much to our delight, he broke out a few lines from Frank Ocean‘s “Super Rich Kids”!!!
Cinco de Mayo (not to be confused with Mexico’s Independence Day) celebrates an unlikely military victory Mexico had over the French back in the day. It’s not as big of deal there, but in the U.S. it’s all about guacamole, booze and parties (I’ll be shooting tequila starting at sundown). In that spirit, vote to tell us if Santana‘s “Maria Maria” or Miguel‘s “Adorn” makes you want to wave that Mexican flag harder this weekend. Read more…
Abner Ramirez and Amanda Sudano Ramirez are JOHNNYSWIM, a new bluesy folk duo that have already started drawing favorable comparisons to The Civil Wars. The band’s Home Vol. I EP is both haunting and romantic, and has been in heavy rotation around the offices here at VH1 over the last few months. Big things seem to be on the horizon for the two — case in point, JOHNNYSWIM performed for Kathie Lee Gifford, Hoda Kotb, and an audience of a few million people on the fourth hour of Today this morning.
Beyonce, who is currently on the international leg of The Mrs. Carter Show, is said to have a lot specific demands when it comes to her tour stops. Her rider was reportedly revealed when an insider shared the singer’s secret needs.
The hip-hop world continues to mourn the untimely passing of Chris “Mac Daddy” Kelly, one half of the 90s era rap sensation Kris Kross. Kelly was found dead at his Atlanta home on Wednesday, and TMZ is reporting that Kelly’s mother told police that he had been doing both cocaine and heroin the night before he died.
Grief and shock rippled through the heavy metal community yesterday at the late-breaking news that founding Slayer guitarist Jeff Hanneman had died at the age of 49. The band released a terse statement on their official website, Slayer.net, yesterday afternoon saying “Slayer is devastated to inform that their bandmate and brother, Jeff Hanneman, passed away at about 11AM this morning near his Southern California home. Hanneman was in an area hospital when he suffered liver failure. He is survived by his wife Kathy, his sister Kathy and his brothers Michael and Larry, and will be sorely missed. Our Brother Jeff Hanneman, May He Rest In Peace (1964 – 2013)”.
Kelly Rowland received some well deserved praise when her makeup free photo for the No. 7 spot on People‘s ‘Most Beautiful’ list hit the ‘net. Posing for a national magazine without makeup was nearly unheard of, but Kelly did it and stunned.
