Beside’s Kevin Hart’s hilarious set Saturday night, there were some pretty LOL-worthy instances at Essence Music Festival in New Orleans this past weekend, and even though it was impossible to be everywhere and see everything, we put together a short list of our Top 5 Most Entertaining Moments for you all to experience vicariously.
1. LisaRaye McCoy Makes A Ca$h Out Joke
If you haven’t heard Ca$h Out’s “Cashin’ Out,” you’re missing out. Luckily for us, LisaRaye is hipper than most and made a delightful joke to VH1 News’ Janell Snowden on Friday morning, that went something like this:
Janell: I wish I had all the men that you do, LisaRaye.
LisaRaye: Shoot, I do too. We all need to be “smokin’ on that Keisha.”
If you don’t watch Single Ladies, this may not seem funny, but I assure you, it was. LisaRaye plays a Keisha Green on the show, and in real life, can pun on the character by referencing one of the most ratchet tunes of the summer; adding to the growing list of reasons that she’s a true she-ro of mine.
Breaking from his “R You on the List” tour with Flo Rida and Cee Lo Green, last night B.o.B. stopped in on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno to show off his “Ray Bands.” The Atlanta rapper delivered his fun groupie kiss-off decked in Adidas sneakers and a gold grill and, notably, no Ray Bans. A group of ladies shook their hips behind him, and green lasers swirled overhead. Why? Because — Forbes lists, bottles popped and name brand shades — Bobby Ray Simmons, Jr. is fancy like that.

An iconic star was born when Lil’ Kim arrived on the scene in 1995. Not only would the Queen Bee go on to break records, she was the first to successfully define an image with her style that pushed the boundaries of what it meant to be a female rapper during the 90s. Her bubbly personality was matched with over the top fashion–designer of course–that oftentimes put her sexuality on full display. Green, purple and red wigs? Kim was doing that nearly two decades ago. Gasp worthy ensembles at every award show, including the purple sequined pant suit exposing one boob with only a pasty to cover– Kim’s been doing that. Over the years her style has evolved as she evolves. Don’t confuse evolution with conforming to what’s in at the moment though. As she was ahead of her time musically and stylistically she continues to dress to the beat of her own drum. In honor of her 37th birthday, here are 37 of her most iconic fashion choices. Happy Birthday, Queen Bee!

At VH1, countless hours are spent determining what music best complements our shows. This past month was no different as VH1’s CMI team worked to synch the best tracks to shows like Mob Wives Chicago and Single Ladies 2, tunes that added an extra spark to the drama onscreen. We thought it would be neat to give you an inside look into this world of music supervision.
To this end, we’ve put together a list of all the songs featured on our network in June — from artists like Timomatic, Emeli Sande, and up-and-comer Elle King. Additionally, we’ve included commentary from CMI team members as to why they selected songs for particular scenes as well as a Spotify playlist for you to sample. Enjoy, and look out for our July playlist!

TRENT REZNOR COMPOSED THEME SONG FOR NEW CALL OF DUTY GAME
With the success of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and The Social Network past, we are grateful that there is nary a soundtrack project that the Nine Inch Nails frontman will turn down. [USAToday]
FORMER THAT METAL SHOW GUEST MICK BROWN ARRESTED FOR DUI
Ted Nugent’s drummer was pinched by the popo in Waterfront, Maine, over the weekend. The twist? He was driving a golf cart. [TMZ]
The Lumineers had us at first “Ho Hey,” but their visit to VH1 headquarters a few weeks back really got our hearts and feet thumping. Looking the part in soft chambray shirts and suspenders, and with big smiles on their faces, they played a few songs before sitting down to talk about their move west from Brooklyn to Colorado and about hearing their music on television for the first time. All the while our photographer, Lauren Weissler, was tagging along to catch them setting up, hanging out, plugging in, and playing. We’ve named The Lumineers our You Oughta Know artists for July and August because we just can’t get enough of their warm, roots-revival rock; the rest of you, though, who have helped to propel their album to the #3 spot on Billboard’s Folk chart and #4 on the Indie chart, might have your own reasons for loving them. But check out the photos below and tell us: aren’t you so charmed, too?
But wait, we have a surprise for you! We have a special, free MP3 download of “Big Parade” by The Lumineers here for you!

The Killers‘ fourth album — and their first in as many years — Battle Born, is due out this fall (September 18th), and this first single shows promising signs of a full return to form for the Las Vegas rockers. Premiering this morning on L.A.’s KROQ, “Runaways” seems most of all to have roundly reminded the internet (or at least us) of all that’s been missing in the electronic dance-rock world. And few spins later we can comfortably report that, after two years hiatus and apparently not a beat missed, The Killers are back and ready to rock arenas once more. Read more…
Britney Spears doesn’t care who’s around or who’s watching; if she wants to get jiggy with it she will. That is, if it’s a Vanilla Ice song. For Vanilla Ice she will happily jump to her feet, even if she’s at work and if even if none of her co-workers join in. Word to your mother. TMZ reports during the Greensboro, NC auditions for The X Factor Britney couldn’t help herself from boogieing to a contestant’s rendition of the popular 1990s “Ice Ice Baby.” Luckily, someone caught it on camera. Her dance moves are about as old as the song (we saw that little raising of the roof, Brit!), but who cares? The happy, not taking life too seriously Britney is a great look on her. With a new gig and fairly new fiancee there’s much for the pop star to dance about. Dance on. Read more…
Yesterday, we put Team StarKid through the pop culture paces with a 50 Shades of Grey quiz — and they failed, spectacularly. We had such high hopes for the Chicago-based theater company since their big YouTube hits like A Very Potter Musical and Holy Musical B@man are pop culture parodies! This should be in their blood! However, we’re kind and we decided to give them a second chance on a slightly less NC-17 piece of work and see if they could rise to the occasion.
Today’s challenge – Catching Fire, the second book in the Hunger Games trilogy that’s soon to be a film. We had them guess the fake quote amidst 3 real quotes from the novel. They may not know much about BDSM romance novels, but we’re hoping they do a bit better on post-apocalyptic societies — their most recent tour was the Apocalyptour, after all.
Legendary hip-hop groups reuniting is as exciting as the day animator and film director Mike Judge revealed in an interview he thought about bringing MTV’s Daria back. Both of these things, although totally unrelated, give us great joy. Hold on to your britches because rap pioneers Run-D.M.C. are set to headline this year’s Fun Fun Fun Fest in Austin, TX, per Rolling Stone. The possibilities of anticipated classics being performed like “Sucker MCs” or “My Adidas” are endless. For the first time in over a decade Joseph “Run” Simmons and Darryl “D.M.C.” McDaniels will reunite on stage for what has the potential to be an epic performance. Let’s hope the Rev can take one day off from his pastoral duties and just be Run–straight 1984 style. Read more…
