12 Days Of DIVAS: Jessica Simpson, Gladys Knight and Joss Stone Harness The Power Of Imagination

One more night of sleep until VH1 DIVAS Celebrates Soul airs on VH1 on Monday, December 19 at 9 p.m. ET/PT! The show will feature performances by Mary J. Blige, Jennifer Hudson, Florence + The Machine, Kelly Clarkson, Jessie J and other lovely ladies.

For the past 12 days, we’ve been reliving DIVAS past in order to get into the DIVAS spirit, including hot numbers from Jill Scott, Whitney Houston, Donna Summer (twice!), Mariah Carey and more. So now that it’s the final day of our DIVAS countdown, it’s time for one last trip down memory lane, courtesy of Jessica Simpson, Gladys Knight and Joss Stone. Back in 2004, they performed the stone classic “I’ve Got To Use My Imagination”, and the three women are radiant, powerful and fierce as they sing the independent woman anthem. There’s a generous helping of soul and funk as the women harmonize to the sounds of a live band — these are three beautiful women you probably wouldn’t want to mess with!

Today, we’ve giving you another dose of destiny, with Destiny’s Child performing Diana Ross“Upside Down,” and yep, they’re still in those amazing matching-but-slightly-different gold lame outfits that defined the year 2000. It’s pretty exciting to see Beyoncé and Kelly Rowland take the lead and shine (both literally and figuratively) way back when they were still part of a four-piece, and great to see the girls taking it to the audience. The performance is full of funk and synchronized hip popping, and is making us not only nostalgic for the DIVAS of yesteryear, but excited for the DIVAS of the future.

12 Days Of DIVAS: Destiny’s Child Get Fierce And Unbelievably Sexy For “Say My Name”

It’s the 7th day of DIVAS, and the VH1 DIVAS Celebrates Soul event is hurtling towards us now — we can’t wait until it hits! Set to air on VH1 on Monday, December 19 at 9 p.m. ET/PT, the show will feature performances by Mary J. Remember when there were 4? Today, for the 7th day of DIVAS, we’re giving you Destiny’s Child performing “Say My Name” in 2000. The girls may have been whittled down until there was only one left sitting on the throne — King B, naturally — but Destiny’s Child are iconic in their own right, and always will be. As fresh faced teenagers on the brink of young adulthood, the girls are SO 2000 in matching gold get ups, heavy makeup and synchronized dances. Moreover, they’re fierce and sexy, laying the foundation for the legacy of female empowerment that Beyoncé continues to champion 11 years later.

12 Days Of DIVAS: Donna Summer Reflects On The Supremes

Can I get a “DIVAS!”? VH1 DIVAS Celebrates Soul, is set to air on VH1 on Monday, December 19 at 9 p.m. ET/PT, with what are set to be epic performances by Mary J. Blige, Jennifer Hudson, Florence + The Machine, Kelly Clarkson, Jessie J and other lovely ladies. In anticipation of the huge event, we’re playing the role of Ghost Of DIVAS past, and bringing you some of our favourite performances as we take a trip through the archive. So far, we’ve revisited Jill Scott, Beyoncé, Gladys Knight and Whitney Houston, remembering their earth shattering performances on the DIVAS stage.

Today, for the 5th day of DIVAS, my true love gave to me, reflections of the way life used to be! We have Donna Summer singing The Supremes“Reflections” in 2000, and not only is she divine in full curls and fishtailed black gown, she is absolutely commanding. Taking on the classic song with poise and control, Summer makes performing look easy. Hitting spine tingling high notes, and adding an element of husky bedroom-eye undertones to the verses, Summer’s rendition, in the same vein of The Supremes is joyful despite the nostalgic, melancholy subject matter.

12 Days Of DIVAS: Whitney Houston Is Right, And Definitely OK

We’re creeping closer to VH1 DIVAS Celebrates Soul, set to air on VH1 on Monday, December 19 at 9 p.m. ET/PT, and the daily countdown continues as we prepare for performances by Mary J. Blige, Jennifer Hudson, Florence + The Machine, Kelly Clarkson, Jessie J and other lovely ladies. It’s Day 4 on the DIVAS advent calendar, and we’ve bought you classic flashback performances from Jill Scott, Beyoncé and Gladys Knight.

Today, we have one of the world’s biggest divas, Whitney Houston, and we’ve even made up a jingle to go along with the performance: “On the 4th day of DIVAS, Whitney Houston is sublime — the way she’s singing back in ’99!” Her performance of “It’s Not Right But It’s OK” is dance floor anthem Whitney at her best. Whitney is fierce as she snarls into the microphone, reminding us of everything we loved about the soulful girl music of the nineties. She’s even got the moves to go with the track, busting out some hip shaking along with her backup dancers, and she does it with all the attitude we’ve come to expect from our Whits — yep, she’s partying like it’s 1999, alright!

12 Days Of DIVAS: Gladys Knight Gives The Sentimental “The Way We Were” A Soulful Turn

VH1 DIVAS Celebrates Soul is set to air on VH1 on Monday, December 19 at 9 p.m. ET/PT, and as you already know we’re counting down the days until Mary J. Blige, Jennifer Hudson, Florence + The Machine, Kelly Clarkson, Jessie J and other lovely ladies take to the stage for us. We’re now tearing off Day 3 of the DIVAS advent calendar, after bringing you Jill Scott covering “Natural Woman” on Monday and Beyoncé singing her classic “Dangerously In Love” yesterday.

One quarter of the way through the DIVAS countdown and now we’ve got a classic performance of Barbra Streisand‘s “The Way We Were” by the Empress of Soul herself, Gladys Knight. Bringing a new level of soul to the classic sentimental track, Gladys all but blows the stage away with this stirring vocal performance from VH1 DIVAS 2004. With a soaring vocal on the big notes and an infectious smile (you’ll smile too!) when she sings the lyrics “Would we? Could we?”, Gladys does the iconic number the justice it deserves.

12 Days Of DIVAS: Beyonce’s Performance Of “Dangerously In Love” Will Give You Goosebumps

VH1 DIVAS Celebrates Soul will air on VH1 on Monday, December 19 at 9 p.m. ET/PT, and we’re counting down the days until Mary J. Blige, Jennifer Hudson, Florence + The Machine, Kelly Clarkson, Jessie J and other lovely ladies take to the stage for us. And what better way to count down than to offer you up a delicious diva from past DIVAS events every day until the show? It’s a DIVAS advent calendar, if you will!

Yesterday, we bought you Jill Scott covering Aretha Franklin’s “(You Make Me Feel Like A) Natural Woman” back in 2001, and today, we bring you number one DIVA extraordinaire, Beyoncé. Singing her hit song “Dangerously In Love” at the 2003 DIVAS Duets show, this hearkens back to a time when the reign of Bey was only just beginning to hit out on her own, as she had just debuted her first solo album bearing the same name. But even then it was overtly apparent that she’d wear the crown — we hail King B! Beyoncé’s performance is powerful and goosebump-inducing, and we challenge you not to shudder as she throws down “I love you” repeatedly over her band, dappled light reflecting across the stage and in her magical ball gown.
