No worse for their early exits, Chris Daughtry and Adam Lambert are two such Idol alumni who have proven themselves winners beyond the competition, racking up album sales and Grammy nods galore. Daughtry and Lambert have already proven themselves worthy competitors on Idol, but how will they fare in the battle for VH1′s Greatest Male Artist? Idol Rumor Mills Keep Churning: Mariah Carey Is Mad About Nicki, Kanye West Enters Talks

Remember when American Idol made stars? These days, it seems like the singing competition portion of the show is just reason to keep a judges’ table, stocked full with top shelf celebrities. Yesterday we reported that US Weekly‘s got good word from a source that Nicki Minaj has been tapped as a judge for the upcoming season of American Idol. Minaj allegedly turned down a similar gig already, but now with Mariah Carey on board, and with Britney Spears on The X Factor and Christina Aguilera on The Voice, who could blame her for wanting in on the fun?

Well, today TMZ reports that Carey is not down with the idea, and that she “hung up the phone when she was told Nicki was the candidate” because she was under the impression that she alone would fill the season’s diva quota. Meanwhile, TMZ is also reporting that Idol execs have reached out to yet another potential celeb-judge: Kanye West, who is apparently “on the fence” because “he’s not sure if Idol is in his wheelhouse.” Though he’s not a woman like Minaj, we can’t imagine Carey being much more receptive to that Kanye call. TMZ will probably keep us posted. Read more…

Mariah Carey Has Signed On As American Idol Judge

Mariah Carey is back to business, and officially on board to judge American Idol‘s twelve season. Today Fox president Kevin Reilly confirmed the good news before dialing Mariah up on her cell phone to tell the star himself. “I’m so excited to be joining Idol,” she gushed, thrilled no doubt by the opportunity to put her industry experience to work, as well as the reported $12 million-plus salary she will be earning.

There has been much debate as to who could possibly fill the seats left open by Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler‘s exit. Not only does that someone have to be worthy of brassy Idol judges past, he or she will also have to stand their own against The X Factor‘s Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera on The Voice. Mariah and her five-octave vocal range should do just the trick. We only worry that, as it did for Lopez, who left “to get back to doing the other things that I do that I’ve put kind of on hold because I love Idol so much,” judging will slow down her recently announced return to music. Otherwise, we’re thrilled to have a diva of her caliber back in the spotlight on the regular.

And our apologies to Aretha Franklin, who was hoping to earn a seat — the diva quotient for this season has likely been reached. However, the scramble is not over yet, and as for the others whose names have been bantered about — like Idol‘s own Adam Lambert — Tyler’s and possibly Randy Jackson‘s seats still remain to be filled.

Is Adam Lambert Returning To American Idol As A Judge?

Word has it that American Idol is looking to recast the judges panel with one of their greatest successes past: Adam Lambert! According to an E! News report, Fox network executives are courting the season eight contestant with hopes that he will fill the not likely to return Jennifer Lopez‘s seat. From the sounds of it, the talent seeking show is looking to reboot for its 12th season, and bringing back a glittery old flame like Lambert to judge should help to do just that. As an alum — and a particularly successful one at that — he is well situated to guide and inspire contestants. And he’s already proven a hit amongst Idol watchers, so he could be just the hit of change the show needs ahead of its teenage years.

Shearer’s Spotlight: The Dark Shadow Of American Idol

Phillip Phillips - The Dark Shadow of American Idol

Each week here on VH1 Tuner, our VH1 Top 20 Video Countdown host Jim Shearer (@jimshearer on Twitter) will be sharing his Shearer’s Spotlight with us. Be sure to tune into the VH1 Top 20 Video Countdown Saturday morning when it airs on VH1 at 9 a.m. ET/PT.

Last week, Phillip Phillips became our new American Idol. As confetti fell and bright lights shone upon his face —one that doesn’t look much different from last year’s winner, Scotty McCreery— a dark, Sasquatch-sized monster peaked through the curtains of the Kodak Theater.

The creature has no name, but is commonly referred to as the American Idol Shadow. Besides a few select performers, the Shadow haunts winners, losers, runners-up and even judges. Read more…

Is “Home” By Phillip Phillips The Best Original American Idol Song Ever?

We’d like to offer a hearty congratulations to Phillip Phillips today, and not just because he’s recently become the single most famous person in the United States who has the same first and last name since Sirhan Sirhan (though this is certainly an achievement in and of itself). Phillip Phillips won the 11th season of American Idol last night, thanks to his rootsy acoustic guitar fingerplucking, laconic Southern charm and #realwave stylings. When Ryan Seacrest announced that he had defeated Jessica Sanchez, Phillip performed his final song — in Idol lingo, they’re called “coronation songs” — called “Home.” And you know what? It might just be our favorite original Idol song of all-time, and not just because P.P. teared up somethin’ fierce during it.

“Home,” which was written by Drew Pearson and Greg Holden, has a very Mumford & Sons kind of feel to it; whereas most Idol originals are so syrupy that you can contract diabetes just by listening to them, “Home” was not constructed to be a showcase for melisma. The lyrics, while certainly uplifting thanks to their reinforcement of the notion that it’s important for one to stay strong and grounded in the face of adversity, take a back seat to the verbalized melody of the bridge, which are quite beautiful and simple in that they are but a series of soothing “ooohs” and “ahhhs.” It’s a very traditional and safe song, which isn’t to say that it’s boring. Rather, it’s quite comforting, and we wouldn’t be surprised if more than a few high schools around the nation pick this as their Prom Theme this year.

But, is this the BEST Idol song ever? It’s really hard to top Kelly Clarkson’s “A Moment Like This,” and we still have a soft spot in our heart for Fantasia’s “I Believe.” Let us know what you think in the comments below!

Rihanna’s American Idol Performance Fuels Illuminati Rumors…Again

Judging by Rihanna’s performance on last night’s American Idol season finale, she has no intention of killing the Illuminati rumors any time soon. If anything she’s laughing at the ridiculous conspiracy theorists by feeding them exactly what they want. In an Egyptian themed set-up, Rihanna performed her No. 1 single “Where Have You Been” from her sixth album Talk That Talk . Rocking her new dreadlock hairdo, Riri emerges from a brightly lit pyramid. She and the pyramid are guarded by shirtless men while other bare chest men beat on the drums. Dressed in all black Rihanna immerses herself into the choreography similar to that of the dance moves in the video. Vocally Rihanna’s voice sounds strong, and of course we appreciate her singing live while dancing. Read more…
