What’s a Twitter beef when you have the camps of two superstars like Chris Brown and Drake ready to go to battle for their boys? Wednesday night’s brawl in NYC that resulted in Brown’s chin gash, his security guard’s head cut, an innocent bystander hospitalized and a bunch of broken glass is turning out to be one huge messy headache. As details continue to unfold, Drake maintains his innocence claiming he was on his way out of the club when the fight broke loose. Meanwhile, TMZ reports Chris Brown is talking with New York Police Department detectives about the incident. Due to the physical evidence Brown has he very well may have a case against Drizzy Drake. Brown’s attorney, Mark Geragos, presented evidence to the NYPD Thursday night that Meek Mill and Drake were the aggressors. But Brown released Meek Mill of any wrongdoing with a tweet that has since been deleted from Brown’s timeline. According to TMZ, Brown spoke with detectives in an undisclosed location on Thursday. And now the snitching accusations have begun.
A quick search of “Chris Brown snitch” on Twitter yields a range of responses from “Chris Brown Is A Snitch: If I learned anything from The Wire it’s don’t be snitchin’” to “So not only is Chris Brown a woman beater, he’s a snitch too? Yo can we be done w this cat already?” Sigh freaking sigh. The “snitch” label is not surprising considering the “Stop Snitching” campaign that has been popularized by hip-hop. It’s street code ethics. But not really.
Although the media oftentimes inaccurately portrays the “stop snitching” mantra as a code in the black community that protects criminals, it’s a bit more complex. More than anything the anti-snitch notion hails from blacks long turbulent history and rightful mistrust of the police. It’s not that people simply want to protect criminals, it’s moreso that certain communities feel the police cannot protect them and aiding police may be their death sentence.
That begs the question: is Chris Brown a snitch? No, no and no again. Based on the facts—a bottle was thrown by someone in Drake’s entourage and Chris Brown was hit in the chin with said bottle— we can gather Brown was assaulted resulting in an injury. When normal, rationale people are assaulted they tend to call the police and file a police report. It’s really that simple. For those that believe he’s breaking some type of code, what would you have him do? Certainly people don’t believe two rich superstars should take matters in their own hands and perpetuate more violence, right? Right?
Hot 97 DJ Peter Rosenberg stirred up the biggest hip hop controversy of the last few months when he put Nicki Minaj on blast during the pre-game tailgate before the powerhouse radio station’s annual Summer Jam concert two Sundays ago. “I know there are some chicks here waiting to sing ‘Starships’ later,” he said to the crowd. “I’m not talking to y’all right now. F*** that bullsh*t. I’m here to talk about real hip-hop sh*t.” Word of this hardcore dis quickly made its way to Young Money head honcho Lil Wayne, who reacted by pulling Minaj from her headlining spot on the show just hours before she was supposed to hit the stage.
Minaj later called into Funkmaster Flex’s program on Hot 97 to defend herself, but she has yet to bury the hatchet with Rosenberg. However, Rosenberg himself seems ready to put the whole situation behind him, as he and his fellow Hot 97 compadre Angie Martinez showed up at Caroline’s Comedy Club in Midtown Manhattan the other night and showed this “surveillance camera footage” of what “really” happens when Rosenberg and his crew go off the air (please note the use of scare quotes). You guessed it, Rosenberg puts on a pink wig and dances around the studio lip syncing “Starships”!
Radio vs. hip-hop beef continues between Hot 97 radio and Nicki Minaj after Lil Waynepulled all of Young Money from Sunday’s Summer Jam concert due to DJ Peter Rosenberg’s comment that “Starships” wasn’t real hip-hop. Last night Nicki called in to Hot 97 to speak to Funkmaster Flex (who was very vocal in shading her at Summer Jam). According to Flex the two exchanged a few heated emails before they could both calm down enough to have a live phone conversation. Emotions were high between the rapper and DJ host as both tried to argue their points regarding the bottomline: should Nicki have performed anyway against her boss’ orders, or is her decision justified? Last week, we reported how former Black Sabbath drummer Bill Ward was edited out of dozens of photos on Sabbath’s official website. Most people, (including us) jumped to conclusion that Sabbath was retaliating to Bill Ward’s announcement of not involving himself the upcoming reunion shows. BUT, a statement from Sabbath reveals that Ward, through his attorney, asked to be “temporarily removed” from the group’s website “so as to not give the public the wrong impression about his involvement.” Bill will remain cropped and photoshopped out of the shots for the duration of the band’s forthcoming shows.
Over the weekend, the reunited original line-up of Black Sabbath, sans drummer Bill Ward, performed their hometown gig in Birmingham, England despite the drama taking place over the past few weeks. Bill chose not to include himself because he felt as though the contract he was offered was unfair and they couldn’t reach an agreement. Bassist Geezer Butler commented on his decision, releasing a statement that reads, “I feel sad to see the Sabbath reunion becoming a bit of a soap opera on the Internet.” Butler said the band never knew about the drama circling Bill Ward and feels their representatives could have worked it out. Geezer goes on to say that Bill “wanted an amount that was unrealistic.” He ends his statement saying Bill made his decision, and he has to respect that, but hopes to some day play with Ward again.

We must admit, we were pretty excited to hear that the original Black Sabbath line-up was supposed to reunite this year for a tour and a new album. However, due to guitarist Tony Iommi’s cancer treatment, the tour was scrapped and replaced with a few gigs in the U.K. and one in the U.S. The U.S. date was confirmed by the founder of LollapaloozaPerry Farrell, who explained to us that the reunited Black Sabbath would headline at this year’s festival in Chicago. Which of course, excited a lot of fans. (Us too!)
Earlier in the week, though, former Black Sabbath drummer Bill Ward posted a statement on his official website to announce that he’s definitely not reuniting with Sabbath for the upcoming shows because he feels the contract they offered him was unfair. The rocker explained that after a final effort, he still hasn’t reached an agreement with the band and therefore won’t be playing at the three shows Sabbath has lined up. Bill explained, “It is with a very sad heart that I bring you this news. I am sincerely passionate in my desire to play with the band and I’m very, very sorry that it’s fallen to this.” Ward added that he doesn’t blame his band mates but feels it’s “sad that it’s come to this.” Read more…
As if Chriannagate wasn’t messy enough, last night Chris Brown released a freestyle over Kanye West’s “Way Too Cold (Theraflu)” that sounds like a diss toward his ex-girlfriend Rihanna. Talk about a bad case of the ex. In the freestyle Brown raps, “Don’t f*ck with my old bitches/like a bad fur/every industry n*gga done had her/trick or treat like a pumpkin/just to smash her.” OUCH.
Per TMZ, Rihanna must have gotten wind of the diss track and responded by unfollowing him on Twitter promptly. She also Instagrammed a pink Tweegram that read, “Take that thumb out your butt.” Looks like Rihanna has finally had enough of Brown continually treating her like garbage.

Beef is the new come up for newcomer Azealia Banks. Following the public spat she had with Iggy Azalea and T.I., she now has a bone to pick with Lil’ Kim. Over the weekend, Banks sent a series of tweets expressing her frustrations with Lil Kim for not getting back to her about the collaboration the two had planned for Banks’ upcoming debut album Broke With Expensive Taste. Initially she sent out a subliminal tweet leaving everyone wondering who she was referring to. Finally she named Lil’ Kim and wrote, “Okay so true tea is that Lil’ Kim got mad that I wrote a verse for her on a record I wanted her on,” Banks tweeted. “Everyone knows Lil’ Kim doesn’t write her own raps and I saw this as a faster more efficient way of getting the track done.She then had her assistant write me some long ass offensive email about how Lil Kim writes her own raps and doesn’t need anyone’s help. So….. My question was and is still… IS SHE DOING THE TRACK?”
The Harlem rapper’s fingers didn’t stop typing there. Directly replying to Lil’ Kim she said:
So far the Queen B has remained quiet probably somewhere rapping her own lyrics, “You wanna rumble with the Bee huh? Throw a hex on your whole family.” Her publicist, however, released a statement on her behalf to AllHipHop.com. The statement reiterates that there is no friction since Lil’ Kim and Banks have never met or spoken directly. And taking the high road CJ Carter ends the statement wishing Banks the best, “It seems that this is another sad attempt by someone trying to use my client for publicity. We wish her nothing but the best.”
The last rapper to successfully build a career based on beef was 50 Cent. And he had a handful of hot singles and a hit album before he did it. Banks’ talent is undeniable. We just want her to pump her brakes just a little bit. If this is how Banks comes at her “idol,” we’re scared, very scared, of what she’ll do to someone she doesn’t like. Yikes.
Hell hath no fury like a Gleek scorned! After Australian artist Gotye, whose song “Somebody That I Used To Know” is currently sitting atop the Billboard Hot 100, told the Australian Sunday Mail newspaper that the Glee cover of his song was “dinky” and “ultra-dry”, he encountered a swift backlash from enraged musical theater enthusiasts. For a show that talks so much about the evils of bullying, Glee fans can turn quite nasty themselves. Here are just two of the hundreds examples we saw on Twitter:
After realizing that he had put his foot in his mouth and angered one of the few groups of people who still buy music, Gotye retracted his diss at an concert in Los Angeles last night. The Hollywood Reporter notes that Gotye told the audience during the show that “the nature of using reverb and space in a recording can change your perception of how a sound appeals to you … I thought it was really clever to transpose the song to two guys … It was a great idea.” While it’s always essential to maintain one’s integrity, in a case like this, there’s more to be won from a strategic backpedal than there is to be lost. Gotye may have lost the fight, but his decision to play nice in the sandbox with Gleeks shows that he’s got every intention of winning the war.
The saga continues like a played out soap opera between Azealia Banks and T.I. In the latest episode of Azealia/Azalea gate, Bossip reports that T.I. stopped by Chicago’s Morning Riot to promote his new album Trouble Man, and once again he commented on the “beef” between his artist Iggy Azalea and Azealia Banks. In a non-politically correct move T.I. added his two cents. When asked about the girl drama T.I. responded with a rather interesting response:
“Now you see the thing is about that. Guess what. I didn’t even know nothing about it to just now. I ain’t even see it. Now I know they going through they thang. But the fact that she’s speaking upon me and mine. And I never, I ain’t even see it. That is what I consider and excuse my language, but that’s bitch sh*t. I’m a man. You ain’t got no business addressing me. You got a man, get him to address me and he and I can speak on it. But you and me – naw, keep dealing with that woman. Y’all handle that. Me and you we ain’t got nowhere to go with that. I do what men do.
Everyone needs to just breathe. Remember: “No comment” is a sufficient answer. Use it; it is your friend. Not one to stand by idly while being talked about, Banks took to Twitter and replied to T.I. directly. And she did not bite her tongue, calling T.I. both a clown and a snitch.
Tonight, legendary emcee Nas joins this season’s Behind the Music alumni of artists like Aaliyah, Nelly, T-Pain, Game and Akon. In the program, the Queens rapper —who entered the hip hop game back in 1994 with the classic Illmatic— opens up about life, love, loss and beef.
Speaking of the latter, Nas’ 2001 rivalry with Jay-Z was, without question, one of hip-hop’s all-time biggest beefs. In this exclusive clip, Nas talks about his reconciliation with one of the game’s biggest luminaries. After the diss records and the hype had dwindled, Nas remembers L.A. Reid asking if he’d be willing to talk to Jay. He went to the studio where Jay was, and like two true New Yorkers whose hearts beat hip-hop, the two dapped each other while laughing. When Nas signed to Def Jam in 2006, Jay-Z said, “You can’t sign an artist of Nas stature. You can only partner with him.”
