NE-YO is feeling lucky these days, with his fifth studio album on the way and his name already attached to some of the biggest R&B hits of recent times. He was not always the sweet crooning heartthrob he is today, and so this first segment finds the star looking back to his childhood with parents who loved music but where always fighting, and to his early days on stage — some of which were not so pretty. “Every dream I have has been realized,” he says. “How many people can say that? Not very many.”

Are you on a mobile device? Click here to watch Behind The Song: Ne-Yo, “Irreplaceable.”
This Sunday, VH1’s Behind The Music delves into sweet crooning singer-songwriter Ne-Yo‘s story. Before we get into that, though, we’d like to set the scene by first going Behind The Song with Ne-Yo’s “Irreplaceable,” the chart-topping smash he wrote for Beyoncé.
“There’s a multitude of points throughout my career that re-inspired,” says Ne-Yo, counting as one of them “Irreplaceable,” the country-tinged hip-hop hit he penned for none-less-than Beyoncé to perform. A shining performer in his own right, the song proved Ne-Yo a talented songwriter as well, able to worm his way into the hearts and souls of others with his writing. “Everybody will start telling you that this will never work, that will never work, probably don’t want to experiment, give people what they don’t know, don’t go too far outside of the box,” he says. “We experimented with something and it worked.” And as for that killer “to the left, to the left” line? He got that from his aunt.
Be sure to tune-in when Behind The Music: Ne-Yo premieres on Sunday, September 23 at 9/8c on VH1.
Prepare to be blown away: Carrie Underwood has both a VH1 Unplugged and a VH1 Behind The Music on the way! The shiny but tough country babe broke the good news this morning on Big Morning Buzz Live. “I’m excited,” she gushed, before sharing that she’s a little nervous, too.
We love that big voice and bold attitude of hers and we are eager to see her shine when it’s stripped down on Unplugged. “It’s really cool to have it really be all about the songs and the music and to just get and go and sing,” she says. “It doesn’t need all the extra stuff sometimes.”
And as for sharing her story with Behind The Music, she’s laughed that, “I hope mine’s not seriously boring, because I’ve had such a wonderful life, and it just seems like everything has really happened … and now I get to do the most wonderful job ever.” Which is exactly how we know it won’t be boring! The run from American Idol winner to chart-topper and Grammy winner and everything before and beyond sounds exactly the opposite. We can’t wait!
Carrie tapes her stripped down set later this week in New York, and both Unplugged and Behind The Music will air sometime this fall. And if you check back here, we will keep you up to date with info and sneak peaks until then! Read more…
Behind The Music is taking a look at the complex life of hip hop artist Game. In this exclusive sneak peek, you can get an idea of where the artist came from, and where he’s going. In the opening scenes of the sneak, Game proposes to his girlfriend at the school she works at, and says he’s growing out of his tumultuous past; “Day by day I have altered my lifestyle into who I am now… A better person, a better friend, a better father, a better everything.” Including interviews with his abusive father and abused mother, the sneak paints a pretty bleak picture of Game’s childhood. The story is absolutely heart wrenching, and Game’s story is a complete tear jerker, and filled with pain and sadness. Covering his dangerous teenage years, the documentary would be much more difficult to watch if we didn’t already know there was a happy ending for Game, who found his way through the chaos of his gang life, including his violent beef with 50 Cent, to forge a successful career as an artist. You can check out the promo trailer after the jump.

In Behind The Music, Pitbull talks candidly to us about his phenomenal rise to fame, and in this little sneak peek you can find out how he was first discovered by Lil Jon. Speaking about the first time he heard Pitbull on the radio, Lil Jon says, “I was like, that is crazy, because I hadn’t really heard any Spanglish records like that.” Listening to the two guys speaking exclusively on the meeting that followed is a funny montage — juxtaposing Lil Jon’s beeped out swears with Pitbull’s boyish confusion and excitement makes for a giggle-inducing moment that sort of makes you feel like you could be friends with either of these guys. Pitbull describes Lil Jon approaching him with a twinkle in his eye and a giant smile across his face, “[Lil Jon said] “I don’t know what you’re saying, but you’re snapping shorty”… And in my head I’m like I dunno what he saying, what is he saying?” The two then go on to talk about laying down Pitbull’s first verse in the studio, which was adopted on Lil Jon’s album, and the giddiness as Pitbull recalls the experience is downright infectious.
Tune in to VH1 for the premiere of Pitbull’s Behind The Music on March 15th at 9/8c.
