The Scoop: 9 Things You Never Knew About That Metal Show’s Don Jamieson

The Scoop: 9 Things You Never Knew About Don JamiesonMutton-chop side burn aficionado and stand-up comedian, Don Jamieson has co-hosted on That Metal Show since its inception twelve seasons ago. When he’s not co-hosting SNY’s Beer Money or playing in his band, Gunfire-N-Sodomy, he’s performing comedy as Metallica’s opening act, working on Inside the NFL with co-host, Jim, and showing off his wealth of metal knowledge with the boys. We can’t get enough of Don, and his Wolverine chops, so we tasked ourselves with learning as much as we could about him, giving him The Scoop treatment. From his favorite TMS moment of all time to the album that never gets old, find out the nine things you never knew about Don Jamieson! Read more…

That Metal Debate: Top 5 Bass Riffs Of All-Time

We kicked off the season premiere of That Metal Show this weekend with Russell Allen and Mike Orlando of Adrenaline Mob, along with David Draiman of Disturbed fame, and rocked out with TMS veteran Mike Portnoy on drums.

In the Season 11 premiere episode, we debated the Top 5 Bass Riffs (not players) with signature lines in songs. You know, when you heard the first few seconds of a song and immediately start banging your head because you know exactly how to play it on air guitar bass and you immediately get excited cause it’s your favorite song or cause it just rocks that hard? Yeah, that.

That Metal Debate: That Metal Show Ranks The Top 5 Keyboardists

This weekend we wrapped the 10th Season of That Metal Show with HellYeah (and former Pantera) drummer Vinnie Paul, Tommy Shaw, and James “JY” Young of Styx. We rocked out to legendary guitarist Steve Stevens, who stood in as our guest musician.

In past episodes of That Metal Show, the boys have argued, fought and made the tough calls on the TMS TOP 5 Front men, Guitarists, Bassists, and Drummers. But this week, our hosts paid respect to yet another league of hard rock and heavy metal musicians: the TMS TOP 5 Keyboardists. How do you choose from all of the talented musicians who man the keys? You have the triple-threat Geddy Lee (Rush), who plays bass, sings, and is the keyboardist for Rush. There’s UFO’s Paul Raymond, Derek Sherinian of Dream Theater and Black Country Communion, Michael Kenney of Iron Maiden, and Darren Wharton of Thin Lizzy, to name a few.

But when Jennifer flipped the board, Jon Lord and Don Airey of Deep Purple showed up in ALL THREE of the hosts’ lists, so it quickly became clear who would earn the top 2 spots.  After much debate, the guys were able to narrow their picks down to the TMS Top 5 Keyboardists. Here’s who they came up with: Read more…

That Metal Debate: Top 5 Michael Schenker Albums

This week on That Metal Show, TMS alum Frank Hannon (Tesla) returned to shred as our guest musician. Joining the boys on set were Michael Schenker, of UFO and MSG fame (and, in case you didn’t know, Eddie Trunk’s idol), and Mike McCready (Pearl Jam). Since Schenker has been playing music for the last 40 years, we thought we would dedicate this week’s TMS TOP 5 to him, and come up with a list of The Top 5 Albums that Michael Schenker has played on. Here it is, this week’s THAT METAL DEBATE.

Eddie, Don, and Jim each listed UFO’s Strangers In The Night on their Top 5 lists, so it was unanimous when deciding it was worthy of a Top 5 position. Though deciding how far up on the list is a different discussion as Eddie argued that the Scorpions Lonesome Crow wasn’t Schenker’s best album due to him only being 17 years old when it was recorded. As much we all love that album by the Scorpions, can you say that it is Schenker’s best work? What about UFO’s Obsession or Force it? With Schenker making music for over 40 years it’s a tough list to put together. After much debate and Eddie physically taking Lonesome Crow off the list (and throwing it into the crowd), the guys finally decided on their Top 5 Michael Schenker albums.

That Metal Debate: That Metal Show‘s Top 5 Best Albums of This Century

This week on That Metal Show, we were joined by Lemmy (Motörhead), Jerry Dixon and Robert Mason (Warrant), and Michael Schenker, who rocked out as our guest musician for the second week in a row. For our TMS Top 5 segment we decided to have the hosts come up with the Top 5 Albums of this century. There aren’t THAT many bands out there, so it shouldn’t be so hard, right? Let’s get started.

How do you choose from Tesla’s album; Into the Now (with the original band, mind you), Buckcherry’s comeback record; 15, Accept’s; Blood of The Nations, which ended up on both Eddie and Don’s list, it’s a tough choice. You also have the underrated band like Hatebreed, who released Perseverance back in 2002 and The Blackening by Machine Head who is Jim’s “modern day Master of Puppets” (Metallica). Which, of course, is debatable. So, what ended up on the list? We’ve got it for you below.

That Metal Show: Take A Special Sneak Peek At This Weekend’s Alice Cooper / Jack Russell Episode

Season 10 of That Metal Show got off to a thrashing start last week when Lars Ulrich (Metallica) and Robb Flynn (Machine Head) stopped by to hang with Eddie, Don and Jim. (Did you miss it? No sweat, you can watch it online right now!)

As you’ve come to expect, more great guests will be stopping by the set this week. Specifically, we’ve got Scott Ian (Anthrax) stopping by, Jack Russell (Great White), Brian Tichy on the drums, and we also welcome back Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Member Alice Cooper (who, as you’ll learn in our video clip above, apparently once pointed a loaded gun at Elvis!). The new episode of That Metal Show airs this Saturday at 11/10c on VH1 Classic.

Exclusive: Iron Maiden’s Adrian Smith, Jason Newsted, And Lars Ulrich Confirmed For Appearances In That Metal Show: Season 10

As exciting as the last season of VH1 Classic’s That Metal Show, you ain’t seen nothing yet! Eddie Trunk, Jim Florentine and Don Jamieson are back for the tenth season of the show that’s revered by metalheads and musicians alike, and although the show won’t be back until Saturday, March 31, we just got our hands on a sneak preview of the first batch of confirmed guests and it’s a DOOZY.

Leading the way will be a first time That Metal Show appearance by Adrian Smith of Iron Maiden, which we are totally geeking out in anticipation of. “I’ve known the Maiden guys for a long time and been a fan since day one,” host Eddie Trunk told us. “They are easily one of the most requested bands to have a member of on TMS. Because they are such a global band it’s been hard to track them down, but thrilled we were able to catch up with Adrian. It will be cool because we don’t hear from him often, he’s a great guy, has a huge history with the band, and has a new side project to discuss.”

We asked Eddie if there’s any chance that he’d dress up as Iron Maiden’s infamous mascot, Eddie The Head, for the show. His reply? “I do have a mask, so you never know…”

Also on the docket this season will be appearances from Jason Newsted (another TMS newbie!), Metallica‘s Lars Ulrich, Motorhead‘s Lemmy Kilmister and the one and only Alice Cooper. “We’re super psyched about this lineup, as is Eddie Trunk. “I’m so excited about the evolution of the show, having rock and metal artists, and first time and returning guests,” he told us. “I love all the variety and am thrilled for a huge 2012!”
