Singer, songwriter, poet and actress Jill Scott is a woman of many looks. From her various hairstyles to versatile fashion styles, this dynamic soul artist always keeps it fresh. Kicking off the 16th season of VH1 Storytellers, Jill Scott shows us a few of the outfits she’ll be wearing during her highly anticipated performance (video above, complete photo gallery below!). Since Jilly from Philly is performing her music in a theatrical theme, her different characters need the appropriate look to match. For example, Banji is the eccentric, “ghetto” girl, one whose attire is “handmade” and consists of cut-up jeans and a black t-shirt with bouffant shoulders. “Most girls from the hood, we make our own stuff,” said Scott. “So we add things and change things to make it fit us.” She tops this look off with a perfect black wedge sneaker. Head To Toe
We were thrilled to get a few minutes with Lenny Kravitz when he came through our offices the other day. Mainly we wanted to talk to him about his style and about his music. Which worked out, because he delineated his look in a Head To Toe segment, above, and then answered a number of your questions, which happened to mostly be about his music, in an Ask Me Anything Segment below.
“I put my clothes together this morning,” Kravitz completely fails to convince us, “by what was clean and close by, and not jumbled up in the closet where I can’t see it.” If that were as true as Kravitz suggests, he would look like the poorly-dressed guy who sits at my desk during the work day, and not like Lenny Kravitz. After introductory self-effacement, he tells us about the elements of his look that day, a variation on a rather signature style.
At the tender age of just 26, Avril Lavigne has already sold over 30 million albums worldwide. She first exploded onto the pop scene back in 2002 with an abundance of both hooks and attitude, and now, almost ten years later, her skills as a singer and songwriter continue to shine. Her latest record, Goodbye Lullaby, came out last month and has already spawned the hit track, “What The Hell,” which has been sitting near the top of the VH1 Top 20 Video Countdown for the last few weeks.
When Avril recently popped by our Times Square offices, we thought that her distinct fashion sensibilities (see also: Avril Lavigne’s Top 20 Hottest Outfits) made her a perfect candidate for our recurring style series, Head to Toe. “In fashion, you have the option to express yourself, go overboard and have fun with it,” the punky pop princess told us. “Never be afraid of what other people are gonna to think of your outfit. If it’s weird and out there and makes you feel good, then go for it.”
Check out our gallery of Avril images below, and be sure to follow along for a video where she discusses her look from, you guessed it, Head To Toe.
Last week, Jennifer Hudson’s sophomore LP, I Remember Me, hit the streets and moved an impressive 165,000 copies, good for second place on the Billboard 200. If it has been awhile since you last laid eyes on J-Hud, yes, that’s really her there on the cover of the record. Thanks to a new exercise regimen and healthy eating, Hudson has dropped 80 pounds (!!!) in the twenty or so months years since she gave birth to her son, Daniel. Okay, we’ll say it, she’s lookin’ FINE these days!
So when Jennifer recently stopped by our offices here in the heart of Times Square, we thought she’d be a perfect candidate for our recurring style series, Head to Toe. “I put my outfits together today knowing that music is business, too, so I’m giving you a little business today,” the self-described supermodel-slash-business-lady explained to us in the video footage that you’ll see below. Her best piece of advice, though, is an oldie but a goodie: “Don’t let the clothes wear you, you wear them.”
While gearing up to perform for VH1 Divas Salute the Troops on Dec. 5, Keri Hilson swung by VH1’s offices to school us in fashion and take us through her outfit — from head to toe. We were a little bit surprised to hear the “Pretty Girl Rock” singer say she never likes to be “too girly.” Sure, we remember how stunning Keri looked rocking cut-off jeans and a wife-beater in the video for “Knock You Down.” But never?
“My fashion philosophy is to be myself, which is the tomboy within,” she says. “Even when I’m wearing heels there’s a certain masculine meets feminine factor.”
Even more surprising: the Grammy Award-winning Avon spokesmodel claims to “love” discount stores, including Marshalls, Ross Dress for Less and T.J. Max. “I’ll be looking through the racks right next to you,” she says. “And shoot you a smile.” Whoa, now that would knock us down. [Photos: Jen Marigliano]
VH1 Divas Salute the troops will air Sunday, Dec. 5 at 9/8c. Additional performers include Katy Perry, Nicki Minaj, Paramore, Sugarland, and Grace Potter?& the Nocturnals. Keri’s new album, No Boys Allowed, will be released Dec. 21.
If you pay attention to country music, you already know Sugarland, the platinum duo that’s part of the lineup of VH1 Divas Salute The Troops, which airs Dec. 5 at 9/8c. Or maybe you’ve just heard about them for the first time when singer Jennifer Nettles made her way onto worst-dressed lists for performing in a tutu at the CMA Awards.
To be fair, Jennifer also made best-dressed lists for her red carpet outfit to the same event — not to mention Sugarland took home the award for Vocal Duo of the Year. Still, Jennifer and her partner Kristian Bush have fully redeemed their fashion cred by stopping by our offices and running through their outfits, head to toe. This country act has style. Just watch.
