Kendrick Lamar’s Hot 97 Funkmaster Flex Freestyle And Pre-Written Verse

Kendrick Lamar‘s beasting on Hot 97’s Funkmaster Flex with three, er, two freestyles to “Keep It Thoro,” “Nas Is Like” and “Wu-Tang Clan Ain’t Nuthing Ta F*ck Wit.” If our math isn’t adding up it’s because we noticed the second video over the “Nas Is Like” beat isn’t a freestyle. Yeah, we caught that. It’s actually the second verse from good kid, m.A.A.d city’s bonus track “Country Building Blues.” The kid’s still nice on the mic, though. Read more…

Nicki Minaj Plays Nice With Hot 97 (For Now At Least) As Host For The Station’s Christmas Extravaganza

It’s been silence on the dial since Nicki Minaj‘s Grammy snub earlier this month. The H.B(arb).I.C.hasn’t tweeted to her Barbz since December 5, and has been fairly low-key after a controversial second half of the year. The Queens rapper set aside her ongoing beef with New York’s Hot 97 to host its Christmas Extravaganza at NYC’s Webster Hall. Well, you know how we saw her arrive fashionably late to her first day on American Idol during her Nicki Minaj: My Truth special on E! Then there should be no surprise she showed up to her hosting gig at 2:30 a.m. She’s Nicki Minaj and can’t be bothered with arriving on time. Read more…

Pusha T Gives Cruel Summer A Release Date

Speaking with DJ Funkmaster Flex last night on New York City radio station Hot 97, Clipse and G.O.O.D. Music rapper Pusha T let it slip that Cruel Summer — the G.O.O.D. Music all-star compilation that Kanye West has been teasing since last fall — is set to drop later this summer. “August 7, G.O.O.D. Music compliation coming August 7,” he said. “So fitting, right? Cruel! Stifling!” Pusha, tell us more!

Be warned that, as we learned last summer with Watch the Throne, these sorts of album releases don’t always go as planned. That said, Kanye has been teasing this album since last fall, and the lead single “Mercy” has seen heavy-radio rotation already this summer. A summer without the rest of Cruel Summer would be cruel indeed.

Pusha also used the call to address rumors of a Clipse split (“We definitely coming back with another Clipse album”), and he also called “Ghoulish,” that Lil Wayne’s dis track, “trash.”

Nicki Minaj Being A Female Is Why Wayne Pulled Her From Summer Jam, Sort Of

Lil Wayne has finally broken his silence on pulling Nicki Minaj from the Summer Jam lineup just hours before she was scheduled to perform. And his succinct answer has us scratching our heads a bit. After Hot 97’s DJ Peter Rosenberg said Nicki’s “Starships” wasn’t real hip-hop, word got back to the YMCMB boss and he tweeted, “Young Money ain’t doing Summer Jam.” That tweet was the last we’ve heard from him on the incident. MTV caught up with Weezy and he addressed the debacle quite graciously. Unlike his “F*ck Pusha T and anybody that love em” tweet, there were no shots (not literally) fired or shade thrown. But his answer leaves us with more questions. Read more…

Does Hot 97 DJ Peter Rosenberg Secretly Love Nicki Minaj’s “Starships”?

Hot 97 DJ Peter Rosenberg stirred up the biggest hip hop controversy of the last few months when he put Nicki Minaj on blast during the pre-game tailgate before the powerhouse radio station’s annual Summer Jam concert two Sundays ago. “I know there are some chicks here waiting to sing ‘Starships’ later,” he said to the crowd. “I’m not talking to y’all right now. F*** that bullsh*t. I’m here to talk about real hip-hop sh*t.” Word of this hardcore dis quickly made its way to Young Money head honcho Lil Wayne, who reacted by pulling Minaj from her headlining spot on the show just hours before she was supposed to hit the stage.

Minaj later called into Funkmaster Flex’s program on Hot 97 to defend herself, but she has yet to bury the hatchet with Rosenberg. However, Rosenberg himself seems ready to put the whole situation behind him, as he and his fellow Hot 97 compadre Angie Martinez showed up at Caroline’s Comedy Club in Midtown Manhattan the other night and showed this “surveillance camera footage” of what “really” happens when Rosenberg and his crew go off the air (please note the use of scare quotes). You guessed it, Rosenberg puts on a pink wig and dances around the studio lip syncing “Starships”!
