Interview: Duff McKagen Walks Into Adulthood With Walking Papers

walking_papers_10

What do you do when you’ve been in one of the biggest and most important rock bands in history and they break up before you hit middle age? If you’re Duff McKagen you leave the cliché L.A. rock n’roll lifestyle behind and move back to your native Seattle, study business and economics in your spare time and choose your musical projects wisely. Since leaving Guns N’ Roses in 1997 the bassist has played high-profile gigs with Velvet Revolver and Jane’s Addiction and others closer to his heart such as his reformed ‘80s band 10 Minute Warning and his solo band, Loaded. His latest project is Walking Papers with fellow Seattle scenesters Jeff Angell on vocals and guitar, former Screaming Trees drummer Barrett Martin and multi instrumentalist Benjamin Anderson. Unlike the full-throttle hard rock of his previous bands, the sound of Walking Papers is weathered, bluesy and broken in by years of experience. This is hard rock as made by grown ass men with stories to tell and no one to please but themselves. Jeff and Duff sat down with Tuner while they were in the midst of this summer’s Uproar tour with Jane’s Addiction and Alice In Chains. Read more…

Fall Out Boy Talks The Death Of 2003 And Dinner Dates With 2 Chainz

Fall Out Boy Interview

It all started with an unexpected press release early Monday, while many were still dealing with the lingering effects of a Super Bowl XLVII. Fall Out Boy, your favorite pop-punk-rock outfit of the mid-aughts who’ve never cared for brevity in song titles, have a new album, single, video, AND tour on the horizon, and are celebrating their return with a string of intimate shows in front of fans who never left 2003. While the band isn’t necessarily trying to relive the past, they believe they’re currently stronger, tighter, and making better music, nearly 10 years later.

Fleetwood Mac Talks Tumultuous Past: “We All Paid A Price For That Emotionally”

We had the nerve-wracking honor of sitting down with Fleetwood Mac recently and chatted with the iconic band about their upcoming tour and the re-issue of their album Rumours, which celebrated its 35th anniversary this week. Most interesting was the group’s willingness to discuss their torrid, rocky personal past with each other, which included break ups, make ups, affairs, drug abuse and lots of legendary songs about it all. The band says that emotions and feelings still pop up when performing together on-stage, where their songs live on even after the old feelings and feuds they detail have long-since died.

“All those feelings that you have for each other do come out on stage,” Stevie Nicks told VH1.”Because you’re telling the stories when you sing the songs, so you are in a way re-enacting what happened.”  Read more…

With live renditions of “Angels” and “The Climb” catapulting him to a second-place finish on The X Factor UK, you may not have pegged Olly Murs as a hip-hop fan. “I grew up listening to a lot of rappers and styles of music like Dr. Dre–I’ve got the Chronic, 2001 albums–I’ve got 50 Cent stuff, I’ve got Eminem stuff,” says the big-band enthusiast, proving our February You Oughta Know artist’s own musical tastes are as eclectic as his assortment of vests and bowler hats.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: Tegan & Sara Discuss Joey McIntyre And The Meaning Of Heartthrob

Happy New Music Tuesday! Tegan & Sara‘s very excellent Heartthrob is out today (currently available for purchase on iTunes and streaming via Spotify). For their seventh album, the band wanted to switch things up a bit, drawing inspiration from their ’90s favorites and creating their own version of pop that’s dominating the mainstream. We sat down with the sisters to get the inside info on the album title, a tongue-in-cheek attempt at switching up some commonly held gender roles… at the expense of one of our most beloved boy bands.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: No One Misses My So-Called Life As Much As Tegan & Sara

When a great television series is taken out to pasture, where can fans go to mourn together peacefully? Tumblr, for one, but what about the welcoming halls of VH1? We missed Best Week Ever so much we brought it back!

Tegan & Sara were gracious enough to stop by VH1 HQ to chat about their upcoming album Heartthrob–a 2013 release we can’t wait to hear–as well as the ’90s television shows they miss the most, and the vintage fashions they otherwise regret. The music video for lead single “Closer” has a distinct ’90s feel, and the band has previously said it was inspired by one of their favorite shows: the criminally short-lived but eternally beloved, My So-Called Life. Because we’re television junkies around these parts, too, we couldn’t help but ask them to elaborate on their early fascination with Angela, Rickie and Rayanne.

Move Over, William And Kate: Kanye West And Kim Kardashian’s Baby Is Also Due In July

Kanye West and Kim Kardashian's Baby Due in July

Lest a certain Duke and Duchess from across the pond monopolize all of our attention, members of the American Royal Family stopped by morning television to update us on their own reproductive developments. “I’m due in July,” Kim Kardashian announced on Today Tuesday morning, confirming the growing fetus inside of her as well as offering more theories as to when and where she and boyfriend Kanye West conceived (if speculating on bedroom behavior is your kinda thing). After recently taking a “babymoon” to stroll through Parisian shops and discuss their firsborn’s inevitable dopeness, Kanye’s baby mama stopped by Rockefeller Center to talk about everything from her own struggle with fertility issues to her boo’s lack of filter. “He just kinda does what he feels,” Kim explained, when asked about Yeezy’s impromptu announcement made onstage at Revel Resort in the wee hours of New Year’s Eve.”I think once you’re past like the three-month mark you’re pretty safe. So he just kinda goes off of what he feels and he was feeling it that night, I guess.”

Rihanna Covers Complex

Rihanna has been captured in not one but seven brand spanking new covers for Complex, in celebration of her seventh album, Unapologetic. Of course! How could we forget? That magic number has more than a little significance to her and the other members of the #RihannaPlane. Inside, the February/March cover story presents RiRi as both a perennial chart presence and graduate-level study in social media, thanks to the uncensored sharing of her morning rituals and bedtime companions. Chris Brown is once again a topic of discussion, because he always is where Rihanna is concerned, yet her fearless, intimidating armor proves itself to be penetrable when real emotions surrounding the on-again, off-again and at times, destructive, relationship come into play.
