The 6 Best Sets Of Devastated Raccoon Eyes In Music Video History

Oh, heartbreak! We’ve all felt it’s cruel pincers nipping at our heart at one time or another, and we’ve all at some point cried the devastated tears of loss. And let’s be real — we’ve probably listened to one of our favorite pop stars sing about the whole sordid palaver while we’ve wallowed in our own despair. So that got us to thinking of the expressiveness of sadness in music videos, and the one motif that seems consistent across the songs of different artists — black mascara tears. Because musicians are not always the best actors, and because of the highly visual spectacle of pop music, dramatic smudged raccoon eyes in scenes where the stars are crying seems like a go to for the more melancholy songs. With that in mind, we’ve selected our favorite runny raccoon eyes — have we missed any? What are your faves?

1. Beyoncé – “Why Don’t You Love Me?”
Beyoncé wins best panda eyes on the strength of melodrama. Oh, and because she looks really hot in vintage style lingerie. Clearly tortured, Beyoncé’s panda eyes are paired with martinis, cigarettes, and just the right amount of crazy to make the whole thing unbearably sexy.

2. Katy Perry – “The One That Got Away”

There’s so much emotion in the scene where Katy Perry is crying in her future self’s wardrobe in “The One That Got Away” that we just want to give the girl a big hug. Katy gets points for realism — we’re pretty sure that even without the panda eyes we’d still feel the heartbreak.

The 5 Most Boring “Look, I’m A New Dad!” Songs

All the daddies in the house holla at us! Obviously the joy of bringing a child into the world is boundless, and Jay-Z proved so today when he uploaded a new track celebrating the birth of Blue Ivy, “Glory,” to his website. Far from being staid or predictable, the song was raw, emotion filled and penned in Hov’s expert style. Unfortunately, not all songs daddies write for their babies are as touching as “Glory,” so we’ve taken this moment to reflect on some of the most boring “Look, I’m A New Dad!” songs from some high profile daddies. (Disclaimer: we get that you love your kid. We’re not disputing that or saying it’s wrong. You have every right to express your happiness, all we’re saying is that your song is boring, ZzzzZzzz).

Creed – “With Arms Wide Open”
Creed’s emotion fulled ode to front man Scott Stapp‘s son, Jagger, is the ultimate in “Look I’m A New Dad” snooze fests. Although now that we’re revisiting the track, we’ve got to say the epic power guitar solo in the second half saves the song from giving us the same “ho-hum” feeling we get when we see a Facebook friend post the seventy jillionth photo of their new born baby on their wall (if it still looks like a potato, we’re not interested). The apocalyptic video is pretty sweet too, and it’s made us a little bit nostalgic for really crappy CGI.

Will Smith – “Just The Two Of Us”
Dude. You used to be The Fresh Prince.

The Best Albums Of 2011 (According To Your Friendly VH1 Staffers)

Yesterday, we successfully bought you the VH1 staff’s favorite songs of 2011 without any bloodshed, and we’re happy to report that no one’s brain exploded while trying to narrow down the amazing albums of 2011 into a concise list. Again, what VH1 staffers enjoyed in 2011 was a rich and vibrant tapestry of genres, new comers and veterans, and Adele. Just kidding — while there’s a lot of love for Adele in the VH1 offices, Ye & Hov’s Watch The Throne came out as a dominant force at Times Square. The list also reveals how anti-authoritarian we are, as more than one staffer stuck it to the man and enumerated a mixtape or two in their favorites. Bad ass.

The Best Songs Of 2011 (According To Your Friendly Neighborhood VH1 Staffers)

When we began compiling our Best Songs of 2011 list, there were many differing opinions, and after briefly toying with the idea of pitting all our staff against one another in a Hunger Games fight-to-the-death scenario against the backdrop of Times Square, we conceded that the most diplomatic and least murderous thing to do would be to each submit our own list. You know, in the name of preserving a civil work environment and whatnot (not to mention our longstanding policy of avoiding contact with the human resources department). So while we didn’t battle it out in a conference room or some such nonsense, each one of us faced an internal battle — choosing our favorite songs of the year. As you can see, it wasn’t easy (some of us got a little greedy with 20 strong lists), and while the usual suspects like “Rolling In The Deep” and “Holocene” made appearances, there were a few surprises in the music tastes of the VH1 office folk…

(Btw, before we get into this, we’d like to note that we put together the following Spotify playlist for your listening pleasure: VH1 Staffers Pick Their Favorite Songs Of 2011. It’s sequenced in alpha order by artist first name, so we wholeheartedly recommend you hit Shuffle while listening to this 120 track playlist. Now, on with the show…)

Rebecca Black’s “Friday” And Jennifer Lopez And Pitbull’s “On The Floor” Rule YouTube In 2011

It sort of makes sense… On “Friday” we want to get “On The Floor”… Right? Right? It’s all about the party for 2011′s most viewed YouTube videos, with Rebecca Black’s “Friday” racking up a whopping 180 million views (when you combine the original Ark Factory release and the independent release of the video) — the most of any non-major music label release on YouTube. 2011 will henceforth always be the year in which Rebecca Black gave a new meaning to the word “viral.”

As popular as Rebecca Black was, though, she couldn’t compete with the likes of J. Lo; her beat- and booty-heavy video “On The Floor” came in at number one with over 450 million views. Pitbull also featured at #5 and #6 with “Give Me Everything” featuring Ne-Yo, Afrojack and Nayer, and “Rain Over Me” featuring JLo’s ex-hubby Marc Anthony, respectively. See the top 10 list below.

Billboard Releases Their Hot 100 List For The Year 2011

The results are in! And it’s not just a matter of opinion either — Billboard has compiled the Hot 100 Songs of 2011 according to radio airplay audience impressions and sales data provided by Nielsen, as well as streaming data from other online sources. And the winner is…

Adele! (Duh.) The hottest song, from what is indubitably one of the most highly appreciated, universally loved albums of the year, “Rolling In The Deep” is number one on Billboard‘s Hot 100 Songs list. Katy Perry may have scored more #1s this year than Adele, but by Billboard’s count, “Firework” and “E.T” came in at #3 and #4, respectively. We’re pretty proud to see You Oughta Know artists Bruno Mars at #6 with “Grenade,” #15 with “Just The Way You Are” and at #26 with “The Lazy Song”, and Foster The People at #13 with “Pumped Up Kicks.”

The Top 5 Most Unsettling Holiday Songs Of All Time

It’s the holiday season, and in the immortal words of Andy Williams, “Whoop-de-doo and dickery dock, and don’t forget to hang up your sock.” Yes, it’s the time of year when the limited daylight starts to get to us and we go a little nuts. As a result, we do weird things like stick a tree in the middle of our living room, wear retina-damaging sweaters, and drink egg-nog (which is pretty gross, let’s be real). But we also sing songs that we’d probably find pretty creepy at any other time of the year. So with that in mind, let’s walk together in a winter wonderland of wayyyy unsettling holiday songs!

5. “I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus” (originally sung by Jimmy Boyd, 1952)

Lyrical Evidence:

She didn’t see me creep
Down the stairs to have a peek
She thought I was tucked
Up in my bedroom fast asleep…

Oh, what a laugh it would have been,
If Daddy had only seen

Verdict: There is no way you can convince us that this track isn’t about adultery. How is the boy not traumatized by the sight of his mother mackin’ it with some old beardy dude in his own living room? On Christmas, no less! Sure kid, it’s “Santa”...keep on telling yourself that.

Bonus Points: The original version by Jimmy Boyd was banned by the Catholic Church for associating kissing with Christmas.
