Zac Efron (pictured above) has famously inked the motto to his wrist, and kids are adopting it as a clever excuse. Your mom probably knows what it means. And Drake can hardly believe it. “It’s like an epidemic,” he said, suggesting that “Y.O.L.O.” — the acronym he uses for “You Only Live Once” on the hook of “The Motto” — has taken on a life of its own. And he doesn’t seem upset that you all like it so much, but he has begun to wonder if he can still use it as a title for that collaborative mixtape he and Rick Ross have been teasing for some time now.
“The title has become so… it’s like an epidemic,” Drake told MTV’s Sway Calloway. “I hope by the time we finish it, it would still hold weight and substance. We might have to call it something different.”
But worry not: as Y.O.L.O. or otherwise, the tape will probably still happen. “A Drake and Ross project I think would be amazing,” he says, adding that, “That’s something even I would want to listen to.”
Looks like Will Smith is back to making moves on the mic. Ahead of Men In Black III‘s release, Will Smith gamely rapped the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air theme song along with an eager Graham Norton Show audience, and then he flexed a freestyle on 106 & Park. And you know what? He sounded pretty great! However, he explained that “There are too many people in my house making music right now,” dashing our hopes of a real return to rap.
And so The Fresh Prince returns instead with a remix of his still classic “Summertime.” The song leads the third installment of DJ Jazzy Jeff and Mick Boogie‘s Summertime mixtape series.
“A groove slightly transformed,” he rhymes over a drawn-out rework of the famous Kool & the Gang sampling-beat. Sounding his 43-years-old, he goes on to suggests that it might be “a little something to break the monotony of all that hard-core dance that’s gotten to be a bit out of control.” Funny how a line that’s over twenty years old can still resonate so strongly in present-day 2012. Over the last year and change, we’ve been all too happy to see Lil’ Kim doing interviews again and making new music. And the new club banger “Countin’ Money”, off the I.R.S. South mixtape Tax Season, doesn’t disappoint. It’s reminiscent of the hardcore flow she killed the game with in the 90s. She’s back to street lyrics, and the Queen Bee wants you to know she’s the “realest b—- up in the industry.” She’s coming for blood.
Lil’ Kim’s Paypal released mixtape Black Friday (we’ll act like that never happened) was not the smash hit we were hoping for. But with her BET Rip the Runway performance, forthcoming documentary and Return of the Queen tour beginning May 11, Kim seems to be back on the fast track to making hits (it also doesn’t hurt that her long simmering beef with Nicki Minaj is helping her in the headline department). “Countin’ Money” resembles the NOTORIOUS K.I.M. sound her fans love. Raw, real and hungry. Very befitting of a Queen in hip-hop.
Drake does it. Trey does it. Why can’t Breezy do it too? After releasing his “Real Hip Hop Sh*t” viral video series, it seems Chris Brown is continuing his crusade to head in a more-rapping, less-singing direction on his new mixtape, Boy in Detention. When the R&B singer first tried his hand at the skill that is a very distant cousin of his native genre, the track was met with mixed reviews. Then, in June, he came with a second installment of the series, spitting verses about his appreciation of female affection.
Fast forward to a few weeks ago, and Brown released “#3″ and “#4″ of the series’ clips, respectively and consecutively, this time backed by beats from well-respected hip hop producer 9th Wonder. After his hugely successful Today Show performance, you’d think Brown would be in good spirits, but content-wise, those two tracks were a bit more aggro than the first two. Addressing his many critics, both old and new, “Real Hip Hop Sh*t #3″ specifically called out TMZ, and many people speculated that both songs were also cross-examining negative comments from Fox News’ O’Reilly Factorcoverage from NBC’s concert.
A rapper of Lil Wayne’s stature has certainly earned the right to release music whenever he wants to, so it’s sort of refreshing and endearing that the title of his newest mixtape is geared toward apologizing to his eager fans. Released late last night, Sorry 4 The Wait borrows beats from Rick Ross’ MMG proteg? Meek Mill, Beyonc?’s “Run The World (Girls),” newly signed white femcee Kreayshawn, Young Money/Cash Money compatriot Drake, and street anthem “Racks” by Atlanta rapper YC.
Pushed back for quite a while now since being released from his eight-month stint in the clink, Weezy F Baby’s next full LP, Tha Carter IV, is finally set to street on August 29th. For those of us who can’t wait for tunes any longer, the new mixtape can be downloaded here, and since a now-sober Weezy is trying his hand at hip-hop without being completely kablammed (and because his last few rock-inspired records didn’t do as well as 2008’s Tha Carter III), we should probably accept his apology and support the new movement.
