A huge congratulations goes out to Katy Perry, whose relationship rebound anthem “Wide Awake” bested all of the competitors for the 2012 Song Of The Summer title! You might remember that Katy took home the 2011 Song Of The Summer prize, too, for “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.).” And, just like last summer, we have a very special acceptance speech from Katy herself, in which she accepts our supremely summery VH1 Snow Cone Trophy and thanks all the Katycats out there.

Owl City and Carly Rae Jepsen have been making rounds together in support of his recently released album and ahead of hers. Earlier this week, they “Good Time”-ed together on America’s Got Talent and The Today Show, and last night, they did it again on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. He looking daper in a dress vest and she cute in a sparkling gold dress, the Carly and Adam looked like they were having a “Good Time” performing their Song Of The Summer contender, made extra-rocking by a full band behind them. We had a good time watching, did you?
This week, Flo Rida‘s “Whistle” song shakes “Call Me Maybe” from its comfy perch atop Billboard‘s Hot 100 chart, a feat that seemed impossible just a few weeks ago. It took sixteen weeks to rise in the charts, but it was evident to all from first listen that Carly Rae Jepsen‘s hit would be a smash. And so what, maybe she’s never actually given a guy her number. After sixteen weeks of rise and nine at number one, it seemed possible that “Call Me Maybe” beamed with a sort of pop magic that could never be dampened. But alas, here it has, and we now are forced to reckon: is the reign of “Call Me” over, maybe? Read more…
The biggest mover and shaker on this week’s chart was Justin Bieber, whose “As Long As You Love Me” tore up seven spots to land at #5. Might we call this the Madsen bump? David Guetta‘s “Titanium” (#8 up to #7), Owl City‘s all-fun-everything anthem “Good Time” (#14 to #11) and P!nk‘s no hold’s barred “Blow Me (One Last Kiss)” (#17 to #13) also saw some upward momentum this week.
In the spirit of the Olympic Games, it’s time for our VH1 Song of the Summer to look at a track tearing up the charts on a global level. South Korean singer/rapper PSY‘s “Gangnam Style” was released on July 15 and entered the GAON Singles Chart at No. 1. It also hit the iTunes Top 40 in Sweden, Denmark and New Zealand.
When Twitter’s Head of Music @tatiana first tweeted the “Gangnam Style” video last week, it already had 12 million views on YouTube – in only two weeks.
Since then, we’ve added dozens of views ourselves singing along (to the parts we understand) of the infectious song and hypnotizing video. (It’s up over 23 million now and shows no signs of slowing down.)
While the top of the chart didn’t see much movement this week, that doesn’t mean that there aren’t some movers and shakers on the chart with their eyes on the Song Of The Summer prize. Flo Rida‘s latest jam, “Whistle,” jumped from #7 to #4 this week, and Cher Lloyd‘s girl power hit is gaining some serious momentum; it debuted at #11 on our weekly chart, propelled by strong sales in the iTunes Store and a rising spot on the Billboard 100 Chart.
When it came to our reader votes, though, the Directioners and Lovatics made their mark; One Direction‘s “That What Makes You Beautiful” lead all SOTS contenders, with Demi Lovato‘s “Give Your Heart A Break” coming in a close second. Your votes really do count, so keep those votes coming! Head over to SOTS.VH1.COM and vote for your favorite artist today.
That doesn’t mean that she doesn’t have some challengers, though! In addition to Carly Rae Jepsen’s summer smash, Flo Rida’s “Whistle” lept up three spots to #7 this week, and the aforementioned One Direction climbed from #17 all the way to #7 with their irresistable hit, “What Makes You Beautiful.” Who will be on top next week? Be sure to check back with us all week for updates, and don’t forget to vote for the Song Of The Summer over at sots.vh1.com!
