Tonight Gwen Stefani debuts as a judge on NBC’s hit-singing competition The Voice, and there’s no doubt the platinum blonde singer knows enough about the music business to mentor young hopefuls. She toiled in indie ska-punk circles and paid her dues before finding success in the late 1990s with No Doubt and has reinvented herself during her solo stint in the aughts. But it’s been a minute since she released any new music and that got us wondering, does Gwen Stefani still rock? The answer is a resounding yes.
Say what u want about ARTPOP, people, Lady Gaga has been reminding us that she is still the queen of live spectacle — and that’s no small thing these days. Last night, she brought the house down on The Voice, singing for the first time with sometime rumored rival Christina Aguilera. Though we knew in advance that it would happen, and though we’ve watched it a number of times since, we still think it was one of those moments that made people happy they were watching live TV. Lame, groping, girl power … here’s our own countdown of everything that was amazing about it:
Shakira is more than just the newest star of The Voice. She’s a philanthropist, a dancer, an international symbol of peace, a WAG, a genius, a philosopher and a poet. Some of her lyrics are actually so brilliant, we’re not always sure we know what she’s talking about.
Last night before Cassadee Pope was crowned the winner of Season 3 of The Voice (congrats!), Rihanna and Bruno Mars hit the stage to show of their most definitive voices. These two have been been making the competition show rounds this season — recently: Rihanna killing it on The X Factor UK, Mars bringing down the house on The X Factor — and sounding pretty great on all of the stages. Last night was no exception, Rihanna literally shinning bright and beautiful while performing “Diamonds” in a black bedazzled jumpsuit (above); and a dashing and sunglass shaded Mars singing his gutting new ballad, “When I Was Your Man” (below). Pope would be wise to take some cues from these two, because — see how easy they make sounding so good seem? They’ve got this down pat.
50 Cent didn’t take much of a gamble with “My Life,” the first single off Street King Immortal which he describes as his “recovery, his comeback.” The song is radio-friendly and carefully calibrated for success, with features from a hip hop legend (that’d be: Eminem) and a chart-topping pop star (cue: Adam Levine) and a thoughtful role-out strategy that includes a radio premiere yesterday, a live-debut on The Voice last night (see below) and this geared up new video.
The big-budget video finds the song’s stars on the lam, in fancy cars and on foot as they run from helicopters and spotlights. “The video is kind of abstract; it’s kind of metaphoric in a sense, like the paranoia of feeling like we’re being chased,” Eminem told MTV News last month, explaining that they’re running to keep their personal lives safe from fame and fortune’s trappings because, “Whether it’s true or not, it’s kind of how we feel.”
We’ve acknowledged that the haters are in full force when it comes to Christina Aguilera‘s Lotus. And they’re doing what haters do. But Xtina’s resilient. And like a lotus, she’s determined to bloom regardless. “Lotus to me is the culmination and definition of the unbreakable flower,” she tells VH1. “No matter what its surroundings or the harshest of weather conditions, it survives and continues to thrive.” Read more…
