There was nobody as influential to Brandy‘s singing career as Whitney Houston. Whitney was her idol, her close friend, her everything. Almost a year later Brandy still tears up while talking about the legend on CNN’s Piers Morgan talk show. Brandy remembers falling to her knees in tears when she found out about Whitney’s passing. Brandy also weighed in on how Whitney must have felt after losing her voice. Hopefully her transparency will not be misconstrued to defame The Voice’s character. Read more…
Adam Lambert left fabulous glamor all over the stage in Cape Town, South Africa, Wednesday night. Dressed in all black–leather pants, tank top and vest–Lambert energetically performed song after song from Trespassing for the sold out show. He surprised fans with a cover of Lenny Kravitz‘s “Are You Gonna Go My Way.” His powerful voice sent the crowd into a screaming frenzy. Read more…
Though the news broke earlier this morning, it took hearing it from his own mouth on VH1’s Big Morning Buzz Live this morning to shake our too-good-to-be-true disbelief: Adam Lambert has been tapped to host this year’s VH1 DIVAS, airing live on Sunday, December 18th at 9PM ET/8C. Lambert shared a few details about the gig — he says there he will “definitely be singing,” but was reticent when the talk turned to dancing: “You know my foot will be tapping and my foot will be swinging, but I don’t know if we’ll have any full choreographed moments,” he laughed — before taking the deep dive into what “diva” means to him .
According to Lambert, “a diva” could be a lot of different things: “I think being a diva is high levels of fabulousness, it’s confidence, it’s fashion, it’s talent, it’s just a real high level of fierce,” he said, insistent that these all be considered positive things. And does he, The Glam One, count himself a diva? He said only “sometimes,” because “it’s my own worst enemy when I look in the mirror sometimes.” Maybe he needs to add “humble” to that list.

Last night on VH1 DIVAS Celebrates Soul, Erykah Badu, Marsha Ambrosius and Estelle, along with Questlove, performed an upbeat rendition of “Back To Life.” The performance, sponsored by Samsung, saw the lovely ladies clad in gold — Estelle was all out in a gold jumpsuit, Erykah with a gold shawl and Marsha with some sparkling bling. With some refined synchronized dance moves (backed up by nimble male dancers), and their killer voices, the three women had the crowd out of their seats and dancing for the entirety of the joyful performance.
After you watch this Soul II Soul classic, be sure to check out the full Samsung performance playlist.

Look, we know we’ve got DIVAS fever, and we know we’ve been gushing relentlessly about VH1 DIVAS Celebrates Soul (airing tonight on VH1 at 9 p.m. ET/PT), but that’s because it’s all just so good. Obviously, we can see where we might be a little bit biased, and why you might not entirely believe our unabashedly praising the show, but you don’t need to take our word for it. It turns out everyone is talking about DIVAS, so here’s what some of the most prolific industry people and news mediums had to say about DIVAS (hint: there’s a lot of love in the quotes below!)…
“In a section dedicated to Chicago, Mavis Staples, Chaka Khan and Erykah Badu turned in an ecstatic version of Staples’ “I’ll Take You There” that played out like a master class in vocal control, Staples doling out rich, low notes until the song’s closing moments, where she slyly quoted both Badu’s “Tyrone” and Khan’s “I’m Every Woman.” During a segment centered on the music of Chicago, Badu and Khan performed “Ain’t Nobody” as a series of escalating peaks, each vocalist goading the other with a series of increasingly stunning melismatic runs before ending the song in a sustained, emotional embrace.” [Rolling Stone]
“This VH1 Divas show is 1 of da best shows I’ve seen all year after only 2 performances!!!” [Common, via Twitter]
Hey, have you heard the news? VH1 DIVAS Celebrates Soul is premiering tonight on VH1 at 9 p.m. ET, and take it from us (because we were there): It is a DOOZY of a show. However, what we’re going to share with you right now isn’t something that you’re going to see tonight. Our VH1 Tuner photographer extraordinaire, Miss Lauren Deiman, was the ONLY photographer on hand during yesterday afternoon’s dress rehearsals at midtown Manhattan’s Hammerstein Ballroom, and she was able to capture these stunning images of world class talents like Mary J. Blige, Jennifer Hudson, Florence + The Machine, Kelly Clarkson, and Jessie J practicing their performances one final time before the big show kicked off. Enjoy this exclusive and truly intimated look behind the scenes of VH1 DIVAS Celebrates Soul.
