Bad Romances: The True Stories Behind Ten Epic Break Up Songs

breakups

Everyone knows the only way to heal a broken heart is to channel your emotions into an epic break up song. Some get their rage out screaming along with Alanis Morissette‘s “You Oughta Know,” while others opt for a more wistful sound, like Adele‘s “Someone Like You.”

But what about the songs themselves? Who inspired our favorite break up ballads? Did Russell Brand really prompt Katy Perry to pen “Part of Me?” And is “Cry Me A River” about Justin Timberlake‘s break up with Britney Spears? Which of your favorite break up songs are about true love gone wrong–and which were just born out of a lucky studio session?

Robin Sparkles Morphs Into Robin Daggers On How I Met Your Mother (And Pays Homage To Angsty 90s Music Videos)

How I Met Your Mother is the kind of show that, against your better judgment, you just can’t stop watching. Even the most hardcore fans of the show would readily admit that it’s been years since the show hit its creative peak, and despite the fact that we’ve yet to meet the titular Mother of the show, it feels as if we, the viewers, will never stop sliding down the slippery slope of denouement. Still, we tune in. Read more…

Tuned In: Alanis Morissette Covers “Basket Case” For Bilie Joe Armstrong On Jimmy Kimmel Live

Alanis Morissette filled in for Green Day on Jimmy Kimmel Live last night, after they were forced to cancel their scheduled appearance after the weekend’s incidents. Although she could have used the time to do something off of her new album Havoc And Bright Lights, Morrissette opted instead to pay tribute to the great pop-punk band by performing an intriguing cover of Green Day’s 1994 classic, “Basket Case,” and by dedicating it to the currently struggling Billie Joe Armstrong.

Only a woman who has boasted about wearing her sweater backwards and inside out, as Morissette does in “All I Really Want,” can turn an agitated pop punk classic case into a piano and guitar ballad and make it sound so natural. Like Green Day in angst but not much more, she sang “I am one of those melodramatic fools/ neurotic to the bone, no doubt about it” like the line was written for her. So odd as the job may have been, she made for a great Green Day. And then when she was done, she very sweetly said “We love you Billie Joe.” Indeed.

85-Year-Old Tony Bennett To Intro Amy Winehouse VMA Tribute

The 2011 VMAs are airing live from Los Angeles on Sunday night, and the latest addition to the evening’s already-stellar lineup is Tony Bennett. The 85 year-old (!) will captain what’s sure to be an emotional tribute to recently-deceased singer Amy Winehouse. Introducing a slew of performers who are currently being kept confidential by the folks in MTV’s ivory tower, we’re excited to see that Bennett, who had recently collaborated with Winehouse on a duet due this fall, “Body and Soul,” will make an appearance on the notoriously youthful VMA stage. While the majority of the MTV audience’s demographic was not yet even a twinkle in their parents’ eyes when Bennett took home his first Grammy in 1963, this certainly isn’t the first time an elder statesman has been booked on MTV’s annual celebration of the year’s best music videos. Want to see what we mean? Check out our list of the Top 5 Oldest People To Appear On-Camera at The VMAS!

5) George Clinton, 52 Years-Old (1993): George Clinton presented the Best R&B Video award alongside West Coasters Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre in ’93. Then 52 years-old, the funk innovator and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee must have been pretty psyched to hand Moonmen over to the lovely ladies of En Vogue. And the Funky Divas were most likely equally as pleased!

4) Lou Reed, 54 Years-Old (1996): Making a cameo with house band(leader) Jack White of Raconteurs, Lou Reed of The Velvet Underground was well into his fifth decade at the ’96 Video Music Awards. Hosted by Dennis Leary, big winners that night included Coolio, Alanis Morrisette, and Smashing Pumpkins.

3) Diana Ross, 55 Years-Old (1999): Who could forget the jiggle heard ’round the world? When Mary J. Blige accompanied Lil’ Kim, Lil’ Kim’s breast, and Motown sensation Diana Ross to present the award for Best Hip-Hop in ’99, all hell broke loose! The then-55-year-old Rosstook it upon herself to, on live television, cup and jiggle Kim’s pasty-covered, partially-exposed boobie.

Alanis Shows Off Her Humps

A video of Lilith Fair staple Alanis Morissette doing her best Fergie impression showed up on YouTube this morning. The singer, known for her crunchy outlook, morphed the absurdist club banger "My Humps" by ubiquitous quartet Black Eyed Peas into a haunting piano dirge. Then made a video complete with booty shorts, head butts and plenty of ice. For real.
