Will A$AP Rocky’s Long.Live.A$AP Make Him New York’s Latest Rap Messiah?

A$AP Rocky is not New York’s rap savior. That doesn’t mean he isn’t the most intriguing, most watched rapper to emerge from New York in the last decade. It’s hard for an artist’s project to live up to the level of hype critics and fans set for Long.Live.A$AP. Like Kendrick Lamar’s good kid, m.A.A.d. city, A$AP rose to the occasion with the  (Polo Grounds/RCA) debut–not for producing an LP with a cohesive story arc like his Oakland colleague–but for its production and experimentation.

Criticized for his lack of depth on the mixtape Live.Love.A$AP, the 24-year-old Harlem rapper didn’t buckle under pressure to create a forced pseudo-deep LP. It’s unapologetic in the grandiose boasting of extra zeros in his bank account, the fly women he’s sexing and posturing of street life. “Yes I’m the s—-/Tell me if it stink/It feel good waking up to money in the bank/Three model b—-/cocaine on the sink/And I’m so ’bout it ’bout it I might roll up in a tank,” he raps on the lead single “Goldie.” The themes are much of the “look at how much money I have” and “I know fancy designers,” but his voice over the drums, snares and keyboards, it all bangs. Hard. Read more…

Nicki Minaj Shows Off Her Barbie House In “I Am Your Leader” Video

Ah, lucky day, Barbz, as Nicki Minaj is sending us into the weekend with not just one, but two eye-popping videos! This Colin Tilley directed clip for “I Am Your Leader” finds Nicki showing off her home sweet hyper-cartoonish home, fit only for a colorful rapper like she.

“I Am Your Leader” is cut from the hard-going opening salvo of Roman Reloaded wherein Nicki unhinges and raps, something she didn’t really get a chance to do on the album’s poppier first few singles. In the video, she raps in a room that’s slime green and pink and a little bit twisted — like Pee Wee’s Playhouse or a Dave La Chapelle set — peeks through crooked windows, and then raps some more from a bubble bath, her legs hung over the edge to show off her sparkly knee-high boots. Next up, Rick Ross serves his verse from the dinning room, siting like Rick Ross does, shirtless at the head of a never-ending gold gilded table. And last comes Cam, in a stairwell hung with portraits of the three, wearing a button-up that might be considered subdued for the pink mink rocking rapper were it not throbbing colors. The home is wacky, sure, but it’s Nicki, and like she says: “If you’re not a believer, suck a big d***.” Read more…

Nicki Minaj Spreads Love The Queens Way At Free Concert With Surprise Guests Drake, Lil Wayne, Foxy Brown And Cam’ron

Nicki Gives Free Concert at Roseland Ballroom

Nicki Minaj is a woman of her word when it comes to promises made to her Barbz. The pink wigged Queens rapper made good on holding a free concert for fans after pulling out of Hot 97′s Summer Jam concert. At the Roseland Ballroom in NYC last night Nicki was all smiles as she performed hits like “Roman’s Revenge,” “Did It on Em” and “Pound the Alarm.” For the nearly two hour set she also reached back to her mixtape days with songs from Beam Me Up Scotty. Wardrobe changes and surprises were all part of the Barbie’s production. Foxy Brown, Cam’ron, Drake and Lil Wayne joined her for what was a fun hip-hop family affair. And because her fans mean the world to her, the show was live-streamed online and broadcast on the huge screen in Times Square. Throughout the show she talked to her fans to let them know they were all that really mattered. “I just want my fans here, ’cause I don’t want people to come and observe me,” she yelled to the crowd. “If you didn’t come here to have a good time, go home!” Check out the flicks from Nicki’s Roseland Ballroom concert sponsored by Pepsi. In Honor Of 50 Cent’s 36th Birthday: Happy Beef-day!

Happy Birthday 50 Cent! Beef-day

Go shorty, it’s your birthday, we gon’ party like it’s your birthday. Not only did 50 Cent drop 5 (Murder By Numbers) for free today, it’s the Queens rapper’s 36th birthday. Nine years ago he rose to massive fame with his debut album Get Rich or Die Tryin’ at the age of 27. Along with his crazy story of being shot nine times and his distinctive flow from having his jaw wired shut, 50′s success was also partly due to his ongoing beef with Ja Rule that ultimately ended Ja’s very popular career. Fifty’s war with the Murder Inc. rapper eventually simmered out, but 50 saw an opportunity in beef with his peers–if he was constantly dissing others on wax then he’d remain relevant because people would be listening. Thus began 50′s countless diss records and feuds. It’s only right that we celebrate his birthday by highlighting the top 10 beefs of his career. Happy Beef-day, Fiddy! Read more…

Summer Jams: Bene Viera Picks Three Of Her Fave “Song of the Summer” Candidates

Song of the Summer

Along with cocktails on rooftops and sunbathing by the pool, summer grants the official ok to zip by in your car with windows down blaring music from the speakers. Whether hearing someone’s music blasting from their headphones on the A train, or eating outdoors at my favorite low-key Brooklyn cafe, I look forward to observing what music gets the people going. Only hours into the official first day of summer there are already countless songs that are on constant replay on iPods or car stereos. For whatever reason, warm weather tends to bring proper music odes to the beauty of the new season. Cheers to this summer being one of producing music that makes you feel something. Here are three songs that I plan to have in heavy rotation over the next few months…

NOMINATION: Meek Mill ft. Drake & Jeremih, “Amen”
EXPLANATION:
Summer time is when I indulge in rap music. The beats, instrumentation, samples and lyrics boost my energy for jam packed days. Unless you were a music journalist or a diehard hip-hop fan, it’s likely you hadn’t heard of Meek Mill at this time last year. That all changed with his successful single “I’m A Boss” and later the Dreamchasers mixtape. The buzz around the Philly rapper grew with praises of his storytelling ability in tracks from the mixtape like “Tony’s Story.” He signed to Maybach Music Group where his buzz blossomed due to his first mixtape, but it’s the followup, Dreamchasers 2, that was the real attention grabber. “Amen’s” church choir sound can be attributed to the organ, a common instrument that has been used in black church spirituals for forever. Although “amen, preach and church” are rattled off through the chorus, don’t expect to hear anything church-y. The only thing spiritual about “Amen” is its divine sound.

Drake Brings Out Dipset And (Maybe) Hypothetically Mentions The Chris Brown Fiasco At Jones Beach Performance

Drake Performs at Jones Beach in NY for Club Paradise Tour

Despite Drake’s recent involvement (or not) in a physical altercation with Chris Brown and camp, the show goes on. On Saturday Drake’s Club Paradise tour stopped at Jones Beach in NY where he performed in front of a crowd of 15,000 yelling fans. Earlier this week he promised them a second chance at Summer Jam. Unfortunately redoing Summer Jam didn’t mean YMCMB artists Nicki Minaj or Lil Wayne would come out as special guests. But Drake snagged the hottest upcoming rappers in the game–2 Chainz, Waka Flocka Flame, Meek Mill and A$AP Rocky–to open his show. Cam’ron, Juelz Santana and Jim Jones of Dipset also reunited. “This is something that I gotta do for New York,” he said right before bringing out the “We Fly High” rapper who was later joined by his former Harlem group members. Even on stage Drake remained tight lipped about the now infamous Chris Brown brawl. But per PopDust.com, he was subliminally referencing the incident that we hope doesn’t spiral out of control. Nicki Minaj Does Interview With Hot 97′s Competitor, Calls Lil’ Kim Irrelevant, Says She Wasn’t Going To Perform “Starships”

Nicki Talks To 105.1 About Her Absence at Summer Jam

The plot thickens in the case of the missing Barb from Sunday’s Hot 97 Summer Jam concert. Last night Nicki Minaj called in to Hot 97 to clear the air with Funkmaster Flex about not performing after feeling disrespected by Peter Rosenberg. Per Idolator.com Nicki called in to 97.1′s competitor station, 105.1, to speak to The Breakfast Club this morning, hours after her 55 minute radio interview with Flex. The rivalry between the two New York hip-hop and R&B stations runs deep. Don’t believe us? Ask former archenemies Nas and Jay-Z. Read more…
