12 Slept On Songs From 2012 That Should Have Been Singles

Shoulda, coulda, woulda they say, and if we were heading up things at these labels, we might’ve done things a bit differently. But alas, we do not so we do what we do best and make a catchy end of year list that points out songs that deserved their run at the pop charts. Even if they never see the light of Billboard glory, they’re certainly some of the best songs of the year and should get your listen. Who knows! Did you know “Starships” wasn’t even on the original run of Nicki Minaj‘s Pink Friday? That’s right, and mostly why there was a “Pink Friday 2″ aka Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded. So there’s always a chance for long-lost songs to see new glory. Here are the ones we think deserve it.

Ciara, “Livin’ It Up”

Talk about a missed opportunity, Ciara’s “Livin’ It Up”, a tropical romp across a Kid ‘N Play sample, isn’t even included on the final version of her album One Woman Army. Snatched from a Cosmopolitan Magazine sampler CD, blogs went nuts over the track after it leaked across the web in anticipation for the album. Too bad that when Ciara released her first single, the apty-named, and decidedly down-beat “Sorry”, turned out “Livin’ It Up” was more of what everyone wanted.

Frank Ocean, “Lost”

channel ORANGE received a whole bunch of attention this year, although it was Frank Ocean’s sexuality that managed to steal the spotlight most of the time. The album ended up being a gorgeous collection of songs that perfect flowed in and out of each other–even the 9+ minute “Pyramids” shined. But if any song had a chance at the pop charts, it would’ve been “Lost” a song that tells the tale of a drug-cooking girlfriend atop a catchy pop melody.

Ciara’s VH1 DIVAS 2012 Performance To Feature Michael Jackson Song

Ciara is bringing Michael Jackson to VH1 Divas! No, not hologram MJ. A little birdie told us that on Sunday, December 16 at 9PM ET/8C CiCi will be using one of his classics to kick off her “Got Me Good“ set.

Though, she’s not the first to draw inspiration from the King of Pop, we’ve seen her perform tributes to his work in concerts over the years, work the red carpet like Mike and peeped his dance moves in some of her own gravity-defying choreography (does the woman have a spine?!). So, if any Diva can ”Work“ his presence on stage, it’s Ciara. We don’t yet know which minute-long snippet I’ll be screaming, “That’s my jam!” to in six days, but here are a few theories:

Which MJ song do you want to see Ciara to use in her Divas performance? Ciara MJ tribute footage after the jump.

Future Calls On The Queen Of Rap Remixes, Kelly Rowland, For “Neva End” Video + Jimmy Kimmel Performance

Future is quickly becoming the new “it” guy. He’s one of the new-age rappers that can’t really be confined to a narrow space. He raps, but then he sings, albeit auto-tune assisted. He’s slowly honing his new niche–making music with the leading ladies of R&B and pop. He landed on Rihanna‘s “Loveeeeeee Song” from her No. 1 album Unapologetic; and Ciara called up the rapper for the remix to “Sorry.” For the remix to “Neva End” he’s enlisted R&B veteran Kelly Rowland, who is the go-to girl for hot seductive songs with rappers. And although “Neva End” is Future’s song, Kelly owns it. Read more…

“Dear Old Nicki” Finally Calls Back And Delivers The Re-Up

Nicki's The Re-Up Review

The noise had become deafening. Nicki Minaj listened to the clamor of critics who claim she abandoned hip-hop for pop. She got the unwarranted memo and responded with Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded The Re-Up. The message she’s conveying is simple: I can still rap. Don’t get it twisted.

After her sophomore release she caught flack for seemingly trading in the flow of a hungry emcee from Jamaica, Queens to appease an audience whose most played songs on their iTunes were sung by Justin Bieber. On the balladry “Freedom” she drops clues that she’s not at all oblivious to the chatter. “Did I really body bitches with commercial songs?” she boasts. It’s liberation Nicki seeks, not approval. Ciara Embodies MJ Out In The Desert For “Got Me Good”

Any singer can hit a few eight count steps in their video; only Ciara can deliver it with perfection. She makes it look easy. Earlier today we celebrated Ciara’s 27th birthday with an awesome GIF wall featuring 27 of her hottest dance moves. Here we are hours later–amazed, once again–by the R&B singer’s choreography in her latest video for “Got Me Good” from her forthcoming One Woman Army. Forget a boat load of useless props when you’re a true dancer like Ciara. The visual for this party record is minimalist–backup dancers, a few jeeps, a couple guys, all in the middle of a desert. “Nobody can make me feel like dancing all night,” she croons on the uptempo dance track. That’s how we feel while watching her channel a little bit of Usher, MJ and Aaliyah. Read more…

Celebrating Ciara’s 27th Birthday With A GIF Wall Of Her Best Dance Moves

Ciara's 27th Birthday

Go shawty, it’s your birthday. We gonna party like it’s your birthday! It’s not our birthday, it’s Ciara‘s, but we wanted a gift for ourselves, and you, on her special day. To celebrate the One Woman Army singer’s born day we watched about 10 of her videos (literally the best part of our day) in search of her flyest choreographed moves. After watching it was hard to narrow it down to only 27 since her dancing is pretty much flawless. But, alas, 27 moments were chosen. And what better way to see her intricate choreography all in one shot? A GIF wall! You can thank us later. Whether it’s her hip roll in “Work” or her impressive booty popping skills on top of the car in “Oh,” you’ll be hypnotized, having to pry yourself away from your computer screen. It’s incredibly mesmerizing the way she effortlessly dances to the beat. It’s a bonus that she’s gorgeous in heels or in sneakers with sweatpants. It’s not even our our birthdays, but we feel like we’ve been gifted with a special treat. Happy Birthday, Ciara! While she celebrates her special day somewhere exclusive we’ll be at our desks quietly practicing these moves in our chairs. Shhhh. Don’t tell anybody. Read more…
