Tuned In: Axl Rose Really Loves Halloween, And Other Things We Learned From His Interview With Jimmy Kimmel

Last night was a good one for late night watchers, who had musical performances from the Lumineers, No Doubt, the Whigs and Two Door Cinema Club to chose between, as well as President Barack Obama on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and the rarely seen Axl Rose on Jimmy Kimmel Live. This being Rose’s first live interview (as you’ll remember, Vh1′s That Metal Show sat down with the rock star last fall) in nearly two decades, we suspect the choice of which channel to chose was an easy one for rock fans. Axl arrived on-time (“It’s a miracle!” Rose laughed) and to a very excited audience. And while he didn’t have much to offer as to why he chose to break the wall of silence — though we suspect the timing might have something to do with Guns N Roses’ upcoming Las Vegas residency — but Axl gamely answered all Kimmel’s questions otherwise, and generally seemed the be enjoying himself. Guns N’ Roses Play “Welcome To The Jungle” Acoustic At 26th Annual Bridge School Benefit

Neil Young‘s 26th annual Bridge School Benefit concert went down over the weekend, with Jack White, Eddie Vedder, k.d. lang, the Flaming Lips and Gary Clark Jr. and more all joining forces to rock and roll and raise funds for children with speech and physical impairments. One of the more remarkable moments of the evening came when the notoriously tardy Axl Rose did what many thought he couldn’t and showed up on time and ready to rock, and Guns N’ Roses took to the stage for an all-acoustic (per Bridge School Benefit concert dictates) GNR set. The unlikely set spanned GNR’s career, including material from their 1987 debut Appetite for Destruction and 2008′s Chinese Democracy and everything in between, and was strewn with F-bombs, Rolling Stone reports. Charged rock classics like “Welcome To The Jungle” aren’t exactly meant to be played unplugged like this, but the boys did a good job turning the song into a real guitar jam, Rose seemed to be having fun and — most importantly! — a good cause was served. Pretty cool, eh?

Axl Rose Agrees To Jimmy Kimmel Interview (But Don’t Forget That Metal Show Got Him First!)

The notoriously press-shy Axl Rose made tsunami-sized waves today when it was revealed that he plans to swing by Jimmy Kimmel Live! on October 24 for his first live television interview in more than 20 years. Well, the “live” part might be true, but let’s not forget that VH1 Classic‘s own Eddie Trunk, Jim Florentine and Don Jamieson scored Axl’s first televised interview in 20+ years last November when W. Axl himself appeared on That Metal Show. (Watch above!)

Of course, a lot has happened to Axl since he appeared on TMS last fall; there was the Rock N’ Roll Hall of Fame debacle, a legendary concert at the Ritz, and even a rumored dalliance with Lana del Rey. So, it’s not as if Jimmy will be struggling to come up with questions for the frontman of Guns N’ Roses. We just wanted to remind hard rock and heavy metal fans that VH1 Classic was the first TV network to score an interview with the media-phobic frontman since his band’s mid-90s meltdown, but that doesn’t mean that we haven’t already set our DVRs to tape JKL! on October 24.

AMERICA’S HARD 100, FINALS EDITION: Vote To Determine The Greatest Hard Rock Song Of All-Time

AMERICA'S HARD 100 - FINALS

Well folks, you did it. Just under two weeks ago, VH1 Classic began releasing a series of viewer polls that would ultimately determine what songs would separate themselves from the pack in America’s Hard 100. Over one million (!!!) votes were cast by you, THE FANS, to determine which songs deserved to be at the top of our list of the best hard rock and heavy metal songs of all-time. We’ve sorted through the votes, analyzed the numbers, and now we need your help again in determining the FINAL RANKINGS of America’s Hard 100.

We have come up with a list of 15 songs here, 10 of which won their respective polls — a healthy round of applause for Dream Theater‘s “Pull Me Under,” Type O Negative‘s “Black No. 1,” Bon Jovi‘s “Living On A Prayer,” Cinderella‘s “Gypsy Road,” Dio‘s “Holy Diver,” Rush‘s “Limelight,” Poison‘s “Nothin’ But A Good Time,” Guns N’ Roses‘ “November Rain,” Ozzy Osbourne and Randy Rhoads’ “Crazy Train,” and Black Sabbath‘s “Paranoid”! — and 5 of which we’re deeming wildcards. Each of these wildcard songs — AC/DC‘s “Back In Black,” Accept‘s “Balls To The Wall,” Guns N’ Roses’ “Paradise City,” Megadeth‘s “Sweating Bullets,” and Poison’s “Talk Dirty To Me” — reaped more votes than all the other non-poll winning songs, and might have won their respective polls had they been placed among a different group of songs.

So, with that said, here are your final 15 songs. The same rules apply this time around; vote early and often for as many of these 15 as you think are deserving, and you can always click Return To Poll to vote again. The polls will close on Tuesday, October 2 at 4 p.m. ET, and you’ll be able to tune in to watch America’s Hard 100 on VH1 Classic in November to see the final results.

Without further ado, let the voting commence!

We’ve put together a list of 100 essential rockers but we need you to vote on them to let us know where they should fall in the America’s Hard 100 Countdown when it airs this November.

Last Lap: The US Olympic Swim Team Performs Their Own Lip Dub Of “Call Me Maybe”

AXL ROBES
We’re not exactly sure where this picture of Axl Rose wearing a Missoni robe came from, or who his galpal is, but one thing we are sure of is that this picture sort of gives us the creeps. [Dangerous Minds]

YOUR CARLY RAE OF THE DAY
Your favorite US Olympian swimmers (Michael Phelps, Ryan Lochte, etc.) are the latest squad of athletes to go cray for Carly Rae Jepsen (who, we should point out, is Canadian). We’ll overlook their lack of patriotism this time around. [Vulture]

That Metal Debate: That Metal Show‘s Top 5 Black Sabbath Riffs

This week on That Metal Show, we welcomed The Cult’s Ian Astbury and Billy Duffy, as well as German metal vocalist DORO Pesch. We rocked out with TMS alum Frank Hannon, who returned as our guest musician for the second week in a row. We also asked Tom Morello to stop by our TMS Top 5 segment and help us come up with the Top 5 Black Sabbath riffs of all time.

Over the past 40 years, the legendary Tony Iommi has given us such a magnitude of amazing riffs that it’s nearly impossible to cut the list down to a mere five. How do you choose from the iconic “Heaven and Hell” riff (which fans sing along to in stadiums), the punishingly heavy, haunting riff of “Black Sabbath,” and the “Iron Man” riff, which is arguably the most recognizable of all time? After much debate, the boys were able to narrow down the TMS TOP 5 Sabbath Riffs. Here’s what they came up with: Read more…
