Rick Rubin’s Top 10 Comeback Albums

615x462 (1)

Bearded guru of the recording studio, Rick Rubin has been one of music’s top producers since making his bones as staff producer and creative head of Def Jam Records in the early ‘80s. While his seminal work with Run-D.M.C., LL Cool J and The Beastie Boys cemented his status early on, starting with 1990’s American Recordings by country legend Johnny Cash, Rubin has become the go-to guy for artists trying to recapture their mojo and launch a career comeback. Like any truly great producer, Rubin’s greatest asset is his ears and his ability to match artists with great material or bring out the greatness of their own talents. It’s no wonder everyone from Jay-Z, for whom he produced “99 Problems,” to heavy metal hall of famers Black Sabbath have him on speed dial. The following are the greatest comeback albums he has produced.

Nicki Minaj, Taylor Swift and Linkin Park Are Billed To Perform At The 2012 American Music Awards

We are no Nate Silver, but probability seems to have it that Nicki Minaj will more often than not be on stage at the American Music Awards next month. Already up for four awards — Favorite Female Artist: Pop/Rock, Favorite Artist: Rap/Hip-Hop, Favorite Album: Rap/Hip-Hop as well as Favorite Album: Pop/Rock — the Young Money leading lady will, at some point between all that acceptance speech giving, also be called on to perform any one of her recent releases. If there were one artist best suited to handle that sort of multitasking, though, we suspect she would be Miss Minaj.

Also joining her on the bill as performers are Favorite Female Artist: Country nominee Taylor Swift, Favorite Artist: Alternative Rock nominees Linkin Park and Christina Aguilera, as was previously announced. It should be a big night, so mark your calenders and set your DVRs: The American Music Awards will be broadcast live from Los Angeles on November 18 at 8 PM ET.

BRACKET MADNESS: Linkin Park Is The Greatest Artist Of The 00s

In the beginning of Bracket Madness there were eight acts, impossibly chosen from a decade with so many worthy to compete for the Greatest Artist of the 00s title. One by one, they dropped off: *NSYNC beating the Backstreet Boys, only to be beaten themselves by Britney Spears in the next round; and Eminem topped Jay-Z before being knocked by Linkin Park. Left with Britney versus Linkin Park, and with more than 124,000 votes were cast between them, we at last have a winner: Linkin Park is your Greatest Artist of the 00s.

Accepting the crown in their absence, Linkin fan Bryan Bruner joked that the band was “too busy screaming at the world and saving it at the same time” to be there themselves. Only sort of joking, though. Linkin Park may have been the Greatest Artist of the 00s, but they are great artists still in this next decade. Still out and about, on tour and making new music, they continue to expand the boundaries of rock and roll and inspire fans with their hard working lyrics. So here’s to their Greatest Artist of the 00s win, and to a decade more of greatness!

BRACKET MADNESS: Who Will Be The Greatest Artist Of The 00s? Britney Spears And Linkin Park Face Off In The Final Round!

It’s the final round of Bracket Madness and we are only one step away from crowning the Greatest Artist of the 00s! Britney Spears rocked Round 2 scoring a total of 20,396 votes while  *NYSNC received a low score of 4,466 votes. Sorry JT, you had nothing on Brit this round. Facing Britney in the final round is rock group Linkin Park who barely made the cut over Eminem, racking up only 107 more votes than the rapper. So close. So who’s it gonna be? The Princess of Pop or the ultimate genre bending rock-rap group?

Bracket Madness: Do You Go “Numb” for Linkin Park, Or “Lose It” For Eminem?

After a tough round of voting, with 18,000 casting votes for Eminem versus Jay-Z and 20,000 for Nickelback versus Linkin Park, we are left with a pairing that pits Linkin Park against Eminem. This round’s second match-up may pull less heart strings than the Britney versus Justin face-off, but it will be no easier a decision. Did you go “Numb” for Linkin Park’s unique brand of rock, or did you “Just Lose It” for Em? If there can only be one Greatest Artist of the 00s, who should it be? Read more…

BRACKET MADNESS: Did Nickelback Or Linkin Park Rock Your 00s?

This round of Bracket Madness‘ third match-up draws a battle between popular Aught rockers Nickelback and Linkin Park. In a decade where pop mostly reigned supreme, both these rock groups were able to establish sounds and styles of their own, and to sell tons and tons of records. Nickelback have filled arenas with their melodic, post-grunge rock, while Linkin Park have paved the way for rock-rap groups a many. If only one of these two great rock groups can move on to the next round of the Greatest Artist of the 00s, who should it be? Read more…

BRACKET MADNESS: Vote For The Greatest Artist Of The ’00s!

Earlier this month, after a tough three rounds of voting, we crowned Mariah Carey as The Greatest Artist Of The 90s. That settled, we are looking forward to the near past: the ’00s. The new millennium brought a whole new slew of greats, as rock and rap and otherwise broke into the Top 40 and anyone at No. 1 seemed possible. Who’s next in line for the crown?

Round One faces off the best of the boy bands *NSYNC and the Backstreet Boys; leading ladies Beyoncé and Britney Spears; kings of the rap game Eminem and Jay-Z; and rockers Nickelback and Linkin Park. Eight great Aught acts to be sure, but only one can be The VH1 Greatest Artist of the 00s. Did Justin Timberlake drive you “Crazy” or did Nick Carter have it “Goin’ On”? Were you “Dangerously In Love” With Bey or a “Slave 4″ Brit? Were your 00s “99 Problems” or about cleaning out your “Closet”? Were you about Chad Kroegers arena rocking or Mike Shinoda’s rap-rock?

Linkin Park Beat Out Maroon 5 For The #1 Spot On The Billboard Album Chart, But Just Barely

In a battle of rock versus pop, the rock won this week with Linkin Park edging Maroon 5 out for the top spot on Billboard‘s Top 200 chart. But just barely.

According to Nielsen SoundScan numbers, Linkin Park’s Living Things sold 223,000 copies in its first week on the shelves, just more than the 222,000 that Maroon 5′s Overexposed sold. Accordingly, Linkin Park will enter the charts at No. 1 for the fourth consecutive album. And like they did with 2010′s Hands All Over, Maroon 5 will take the runners-up spot.
