Part of being an artist is believing that you’re the chosen one. The one and only messianic megastar to save the masses from musical mediocrity! No wonder every top-selling pop star we can think of has a staggering God complex. From Kanye West naming his new album Yeezus (really, dude?) to John Lennon proclaiming that “the Beatles are bigger than Jesus,” these narcissistic icons take hero worship to biblical levels.
Some of the most enduring images in pop culture have come straight off of famous record sleeves, becoming almost as important as the songs contained within. It sounds silly, but it’s actually a little upsetting to imagine zillion-selling, generation-defining records looking different! Obviously it shouldn’t matter, the music stays the same. But thinking of Pink Floyd‘s Dark Side of the Moon without the prism, or Guns ‘n’ Roses’ Appetite for Destruction without the skulls, or the Beatles’ Sgt Pepper without the crowd…it bums us out, man! It’s freaky to know how close we came to having totally different images grace the covers of these famous works. Either censorship reared its ugly head, or the band simply changed their mind, but some of these iconic shots were not the first choice. Head down below and see some early alternate versions of super famous album covers that we know and love.
Love and marriage, love and marriage, they go together like…well, definitely not rock and roll! Showbiz in general isn’t a very hospitable place for stable romantic relationships, but the life of an arena-packing musician seems to hold particular hazards ready to divide even the strongest unions. The constant travel and time apart, seemingly non-stop party, and untold number of groupies all could spell divorce…oh, and also paternity suits.
Rock ‘n’ roll is a dangerous business! Just ask Lady Gaga, who spent the better part of this spring laid up in a wheelchair after injuring her hip, resulting in the cancellation of her epic Born This Way tour. The surgery sounded pretty rough, but we didn’t realize just how fearless Mother Monster truly is until she described the gruesome process in a recent interview!
Comic-Con started yesterday, the ultimate convention of all things geeked-out, comic book-clad and science fiction-saturated. So give a nod to the nerds and vote to tell us whether you think Kanye West’s “Heartless” or Michael Jackson’s “Leave Me Alone” does animation better. May the (music) force be with you. Read more…
We’re all guilty of falling in love with vocals that our favorite singers belt out, but are their speaking voices equally as special?
Rock and rollers are usually renegades who see themselves as walking middle fingers in the face of The Man. But then alimony payments start adding up, and those Bentley’s don’t just pay for themselves. Sooner or later, “stars of a certain stature” cave and do a commercial or two. There are tons of reasons why it happens: from legal SNAFUs and bankruptcy, to just honest love of the product (maybe?). But when done poorly, the results can leave you screaming “Come ON, you’re better than that!” at the television screen. Check out 15 of the most heartbreaking commercial sell-outs of all time! Don’t worry, bands…we still love you.
Happy birthday, Biggie! The Notorious B.I.G. (known to his mom as Christopher George Latore Wallace) would have turned 41 years old today, and even though he was tragically killed back in 1997, his music is more alive than ever! Not only have two albums (and a big screen biopic) hit the streets since his death, but dozens of homegrown MCs have taken to remixing his verses into new beats and classic tunes, creating a whole new batch fresh tracks. Some have him sharing the mic with rappers like Kanye West and Jay-Z, while others are unlikely duets with Miley Cyrus and Frank Sinatra! In honor of Biggie Smalls’ big day, we’re going to take a look at our 10 favorite (and mostly NSFW) Biggie mashups. Enjoy!
They say that there’s a fine line between genius and insanity, which might explain why some of our all-time favorite musicians have a tendency to go off the rails every now and then. Whether obsessive, reclusive, ego-maniacal, or just plain weird, the biggest names in the pop occasionally…errr, flip their lid. Sometimes it’s just a momentary lapse of reason (looking at you, Mariah Carey and Kanye West), sometimes it’s wayyyy too many drugs (love you, James Brown), and other times it’s just wayyyy too many yes-men.
Britney Spears shares her struggles with keeping fit, Questlove contributes funds to save his high school’s annual play, and As I Lay Dying’s lead singer gets arrested.
