Biting your tongue, opt for the more PC response. For what? That’s for new artists. When you’re T-Boz from TLC–one of the best selling girl groups of all time–you’ve seen too much in the music industry to tip toe around questions that could potentially tick off other artists. T-Boz sat down with Max of This Is Max while over in London for the MOBO awards. Max must’ve known T-Boz would give unfiltered answers to what she thinks about the current state of artists and Nicki Minaj as a judge on American Idol. T-Boz didn’t disappoint. She went in! Rihanna has invited her “Cockiness” co-star and one of the year’s most in-demand rappers, A$AP Rocky, to join her on her country crossing Diamonds tour (dates below). The self-described pretty motherf***er from Harlem has seen quick rise in the last year, his standout hits like “Peso” and “Goldie” earning him a hefty $3 million record deal, a guest spot on Rihanna’s “Cockiness (I Love It)” remix and a turn on Drake‘s Club Paradise tour — but that all pales in comparison to the stadiums he’ll be helping Rihanna fill come March. Last night, Chris Brown wore what must be the year’s most mistaken Halloween costume out trick-or-treating, earning himself near-unanimous disgust from across the internet. Headscarves on, beards “grown” long and guns held up and a blazin’ over their heads, Breezy and friends dressed to match as terrorists, posting the above picture to Instagram with a caption that read, “Ain’t nobody F—ing wit my clique!!!!#ohb.” No matter how you cut it, the costume bares little resemblance to “a sugar skull,” and was not likely inspired by some “MAC cosmetic design he saw;” rather, it’s culturally insensitive and boasting of violence, something a guy his history should be weary of. And that’s all to say nothing of the fact that he wore the “terrorizing” costume to Rihanna‘s party. Really, was CVS all out of Honey Boo Boo costumes by the time you got there? Read more…
Apparently, these two pop divas forgot to coordinate their Halloween costumes—or DID THEY? I hope they got together for some celebratory “hangouts” before going out, because both women went dressed as each of their favorite past time: Marijuana. But because this is a blog and I a mere human, I had to pit these two Ganja Queens against each other in a BATTLE FOR THE THRONE.
Who deserves the very strong smelling grand prize?
We know Rihanna is full of surprises, but this just made our day, scratch that, OUR YEAR. The Bajan princess is set to embark on her 777 Tour to perform seven shows in seven countries in seven days, just in time for the release of her seventh studio album, Unapologetic, out November 19.
And the surprise part? The pop star has invited a group of superfans from her Rihanna Navy and 150 journalists (us!) from 82 countries to join her on a Boeing 777 Twin-jet (get it?) to travel to each show. Oh yeah, did we mention that WE’RE GOING???
That’s right folks, we’ll be there every step (er, flight) of the way giving you behind-the-scenes updates of it all. And hey: If we could pack you in our suitcase, we totes would.
Details of when and how to purchase 777 tickets to hang out with us along the way are yet to come. In the meantime, if you’re anything like us and need your Rihanna-fix ASAP, two limited edition deluxe box sets are available for pre-sale on RihannaNow.com.
It looks like the Rihanna‘s Navy has well weathered the storm. With only a few weeks until Unapologetic shakes the charts, details are still scarce. There’s that skin bare cover and “Diamonds,” a few pictures of late night studio sessions and then — well, not much else. But today we learn that, in addition to a regular release on November 12th, Rihanna’s giving her lucky number seven studio album a special Diamonds Executive Platinum Box release on December 11th. The deluxe box will include a t-shirt, seven lithographs, a flash drive, some laptop stickers, a View-Master with 3D pics of Rhi, a 40-page notebook filled with handwritten notes and an “exclusive poster” — a great gaggle of goods, and all for the price of $250. It’s an indulgence, to be sure; but Christmas is just the around the corner, and we suspect there might be a special Rihanna stan in your life who worth it. Will you be copping for an Unapologetic box of your own? Or will the usual iTunes download do it?
We are no Nate Silver, but probability seems to have it that Nicki Minaj will more often than not be on stage at the American Music Awards next month. Already up for four awards — Favorite Female Artist: Pop/Rock, Favorite Artist: Rap/Hip-Hop, Favorite Album: Rap/Hip-Hop as well as Favorite Album: Pop/Rock — the Young Money leading lady will, at some point between all that acceptance speech giving, also be called on to perform any one of her recentreleases. If there were one artist best suited to handle that sort of multitasking, though, we suspect she would be Miss Minaj.
Also joining her on the bill as performers are Favorite Female Artist: Country nominee Taylor Swift, Favorite Artist: Alternative Rock nominees Linkin Park and Christina Aguilera, as was previously announced. It should be a big night, so mark your calenders and set your DVRs: The American Music Awards will be broadcast live from Los Angeles on November 18 at 8 PM ET.
Today is Aubrey Graham’s birthday, and as the talented singing-rapper completes his 26th year of life, he’s smooth-talked his way into the hearts and minds of millions of fans (not to mention his fellow celebrity friends). Likely receiving countless gifts from friends, strangers, and business associates, Drake surely can’t keep each and every token, no matter how personal some may be. And that’s exactly why we decided to raid his garbage.
Dumpster diving is the classiest of adventures, especially when the trash you’re sifting through belongs to Toronto’s golden boy. Invasion of privacy, maybe, but like we’re taught on various reality shows, what’s discarded onto public property is considered free for the taking. Below are our findings: the front covers and inside messages of birthday cards from Drake’s grandmother, Rick Ross, the OVO fam, his Rabbi, Rihanna, the Young Money crew, and Chris Brown are all revealed.
Pop songs don’t always end up being what they began. Written with one star in mind, a song may then be passed from artist to artist until the right fit is found. This process gets a spotlight in this month’s Vogue profile of Rihanna, which finds the star in the studio in the very early days of working on her album, shuffling through demos sung by someone else and imagining what she might make of them. “They sound like decent pop songs to me, but there’s no way to judge until Rihanna herself is on the cut, adding that secret ingredient,” writes Vogue‘s Jason Gay of the process. And so eventually “Diamonds” becomes Rihanna’s “Diamonds” and so on, but what about the demos that get left behind?
In an interview with the U.K.’sDaily Star, X-Factor champ Leona Lewis let slip that Calvin Harris‘ Rihanna vehicle “We Found Love” was originally meant for her. “I worked with Calvin and we recorded ‘We Found Love.’ But he went touring with Rihanna and she ended up releasing it,” she says. And though the song ended up being a smash for Rihanna, Lewis is certain that she could have done one better: “It was the same version and production but mine’s better,” she says. Read more…
