Katy Perry was a show stopper last night. And not because of her performance. The celebrity endorsements for the presidential election are rolling in with the election only weeks away. President Obama has racked up his share of artist/celebrity endorsements including staunch supporter, Katy Perry. Perry showed her support by performing hits like “Teenage Dream,” “Part of Me” and “Wide Awake” at the president’s rally in Las Vegas last night. The president shouted out the pop singer and her grandmother who is a long term resident of Nevada. What an early birthday gift for Ms. Perry who turns 28 today. She tweeted, “So tonight was a great night! The PRESIDENT gave grandma and I unforgettable shout outs & now I am officially 28! Best. birthday. ever.” Read more…
Jay-Z‘s already got “Obama on the text,” so why not host a fundraiser with his wife Beyonce for the president. Jay tweeted yesterday–a rare occurrence–”Guest list. Obama plus 40.” All the bells and whistles were pulled out last night for the lavish fundraising dinner held at Jay-Z’s 40/40 club in New York City. Obama joined the two hosts and about 100 wealthy supporters who each paid $40,000 to be in the president’s presence. Jay-Z and Beyonce helped raise $4 million for the president’s re-election campaign and for the Democratic party, according to Entertainment Weekly. In one night. Hip-hop royalty indeed. Read more…
Satirical songs are Randy Newman‘s forte. Newman set some time aside from his busy film composer schedule to record his latest song “I’m Dreaming” where he weighs in on the presidency and race. “I’m dreaming of a white president,” he croons. “Just like the ones we’ve always had.” President Obama’s election as the first black president has sparked numerous conversations around race and racism. Slate pointed out Newman once said, “There are a lot of people who don’t want a black person in the White House and they want him out,” so the song was inspired by that belief. Read more…
We are addicted to “Barack Obama-sistible,” this amazing parody of all the good, bad and ridiculous campaign music videos haunting the Web these days. The band is Detroit Octane, fronted by longtime Late Night with Conan O’Brien writer and performer Jon Glaser (creator/star of our fave web series, Tiny Hands) The band’s musically mocked Mike Huckabee as well, to the tune of Wham’s “Everything She Wants.” We can only imagine what kind of genius Clinton and McCain will inspire.
We’d suggest DMX collaborate with Detroit Octane, but he doesn’t seem to be following the campaign AT ALL. In an interview with XXL the rapper reveals that he’s not just oblivious to our country’s current political saga, he’s never even heard of Barack Obama.
XXL: Are you following the presidential race?
DMX: Not at all.
XXL: You?re not? You know there?s a Black guy running, Barack Obama and then there?s Hillary Clinton.
DMX: His name is Barack?!
XXL: Barack Obama, yeah.
DMX: What the f*ck is a Barack?! Barack Obama. Where he from, Africa?
Will.i.am (of Black Eyed Peas fame) has wrangled a bunch of celebs, including Scarlett Johansson, Nick Cannon and Common, to sing it loud and proud in his new video supporting Barack Obama‘s presidential campaign. The senator’s famous “Yes We Can” speech has been put to music and celebs sing along as video of Obama plays beside them. It’s so pretty and powerful that a nation might find it in its heart to forgive “My Humps.” Stars making appearances in the piece include: Jesse Dylan, Tatyana Ali, John Legend, Herbie Hancock, Kate Walsh, Kareem Abdul Jabbar, Aisha Tyler, and Nicole Scherzinger.

When it comes to marketing, presidential hopeful Barack Obama is one smart guy. The Democratic candidate called into Hot 97 and spoke to Angie Martinez. "I’m old-school and generally I’m more of a jazz guy," he told her. "But having said that, I’m current enough that on my iPod I got a little bit of Jay-Z, a little bit of Beyonce. A little bit. I don’t want to pretend I know as much as my [children]. I’m falling behind rapidly." He’s not falling behind in the multimedia wars, though. Hillary Clinton’s Sopranos video might have gone viral, but does she offer you club-ready ringtones? Obama does. And he’s kicking Hillary’s ass on MySpace, too — 124,225 friends (including Jin!) to 105,420. Go, Obama. Maybe this time, the kids will actually, you know, vote or something. On the other hand, there’s some muttering about how politicians who appear on the cover of Men’s Vogue are missing their cojones (does Anna Wintour keep them in a jar on her desk?). That can’t be good.
