EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: Big K.R.I.T. On The State Of Southern Hip-Hop

If Big K.R.I.T. wasn’t so adamant about repping his hometown of Mississippi he may not be where he is today. Who was this young rapper from Mississippi who produced his own music? was the question posed two years ago when his mixtape K.R.I.T. Wuz Here surfaced. Where he was from was almost as big of a draw to him as his music. Sure, a southern rapper rapping about where you’re from isn’t uncommon. But the only other well-known rapper from Mississippi to “make it” was David Banner. Minutes before he took the stage at Austin’s ACL music festival he told us he believes the south has always been lyrical. Like us, he too was puzzled that anyone thinks otherwise. Read more…

Topping the charts, launching a global phenomenon, topping the charts, breaking records, and today the New York Daily News informs us that K-pop’s unassuming star Psy is working miracles now, too. Because, babies they just love him! As The New York Daily News has found, babies go “gaga for Gangnam,’” and so parents the world wide have turned to the satirical video to calm their cranky kids. As evidence, they present two such babes: the adorable Benjamin of London, who seems to figure lunch is best served with a little giddy-up; and little Claire of West Virginia, above, who knows that tears are a major “Gangnam Style” faux-pas. It’s hard to say what exactly these kids like — the bounce, the bright lights, the sharp satire of Korea’s nouveau riche — because the parents in the story seems most interested in the fact that it works, and every time. And who could blame them?

Because there’s nothing better than getting your groove on and your kid quiet at the same time, we’ve found five other artists that seem to possess the same magic that calms a cranky baby. Like all the parenting manuals say: YouTube, a real modern parents’ helper!

Adele’s Most Bond-y Bond Theme Is Finally Here!

Adele‘s much anticipated Skyfall theme song is at last a mission accomplished. The titular song’s reveal has been less than stealthy, months of speculation as to Adele’s part in the project giving way to a Tweeted clue and then a substantial week earlier this week — a falter that we imagine 007 might have gotten a finger wagging for. But all is forgiven now that the thing’s landed, because the song does better than well to uphold the mission and is as Bond-y as a James Bond theme song need be. And as a bonus, it also serves well as a new Adele song, something we’ve all been jonesing for.

Adele sounds ever so glamorous singing over the cinematic strings and wide-screen orchestration, but she also plays it cool, saving the rousing “Rolling In The Deep”-scale vocal show until the end of the song. It’s like she spent the first two thirds of the song cooing over martinis — shaken, not stirred — in a dusky bar, just waiting for the right moment to break out the big guns. You know, Bond style.

Here Adele’s ‘Skyfall’ James Bond Theme In Full 007 Glory [Spin]

What Do You Get When The Great Kelly Clarkson Covers The Great Adele’s “Someone Like You?” Greatness!

Goosebumps inducing is how we’d describe the great voice of Kelly Clarkson. Thanks to Kelly’s devotion to showing appreciation to her fans by selecting one of their suggested songs to cover, we’ve been treated to a plethora of amazing ones. Last night Clarkson kicked off her Australian tour in Brisbane and beautifully sang Adele‘s “Someone Like You.” Imagine covering Adele, people. Even Kelly was nervous about taking on a song by such a great vocalist. “I’ve actually been avoiding this song. Literally every fan request has had this song on the list. I’ve been avoiding it because Adele might be one of the best singers of all time,” she told the crowd. “It’s very hard to cover people that are rad. It was also a big moment in her career, but I think it’s been long enough. So, I think it’d be cool to do this song in honor of her. Hopefully I do it justice and I don’t suck.” Read more…

2 Chainz Tops Billboard Charts With “Based On A T.R.U. Story”

2 Chainz Debuts At No. 1 on Billboard Charts

2 Chainz‘s rap game takeover has been a long time coming. The Georgia rapper that had us all screaming, “2 Chaaaaainnnnz” was a coveted feature artist in the way Nicki Minaj was in 2009. Those days are long gone and the wait was certainly worth it. His debut album Based on a T.R.U. Story topped the charts for the No.1 spot on the Billboard 200. According to Nielsen SoundScan the album sold 147,000 copies. For a little perspective: that’s almost 20,000 more units sold than pop star Chris Brown‘s Fortune. Talk about coming out the gate swinging. Read more…

The Top 29 British Musical Acts That Got Snubbed During The 2012 Summer Olympics Opening Ceremony

The 2012 Summer Olympics officially kicked off with an opening ceremony conceived by the Academy Award winning British film director Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire,
Trainspotting, 28 Days Later). One of the sections of tonight’s broadcast bore the unusual name Frankie And June Say Thanks Tim, a love story that contained what NBC’s Matt Lauer described as “a tribute to the best British musical acts of the last 40 years.” Well, although Boyle and his musical supervisors managed to include a decent selection of bands that could be considered canon-worthy, we’d like to call your attention to this (quite undefinitive!) list of 29 highly respected bands that got royally snubbed (in alpha order*):

Adele
Black Sabbath
Coldplay
Culture Club
The Cure
Def Leppard
Depeche Mode
Dire Straits
Duran Duran
Elton John (!!!)

Song Of The Summer Flashback: Katy Perry’s “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)” (2011)

Katy Perry Last Friday Night TGIF Song Of The Summer

Just yesterday, we released this year’s very first Song Of The Summer chart, which showed Carly Rae Jepsen‘s “Call Me Maybe”, Katy Perry‘s “Wide Awake” and Maroon 5‘s “Payphone” dueling for summer supremacy. (Want a say in the matter? Vote for the Song Of The Summer, as presented by VH1 and Dove Clinical Fresh Deodorant, today!)

It’s not surprising to see Katy Perry’s name near the top of the Song Of The Summer list, as this is the third consecutive summer that she’s been a fixture on radio. Way back in 2010, “California Gurls” dominated the airwaves, and last year, the fifth single off her multi-platinum Teenage Dream LP, “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)”, won VH1′s first ever Song Of The Summer countdown.

Shearer’s Spotlight: A Farewell To Katy Perry’s Teenage Dream

Each week here on VH1 Tuner, our VH1 Top 20 Video Countdown host Jim Shearer (@jimshearer on Twitter) will be sharing his Shearer’s Spotlight with us. Be sure to tune into the VH1 Top 20 Video Countdown tomorrow morning when it airs on VH1 at 9 a.m. ET/PT.

Last week’s theatrical release of Katy Perry’s 3D documentary Part of Me seemingly brings to an end her Teenage Dream era, which officially began on May 11, 2010—the release date of the album’s first single, “California Gurls.” (The full-length came out a few months later on August 24).

Though Adele’s 21 is still hovering around the top of the albums chart, not to mention winning six Grammy Awards; in recent memory I don’t recall a more memorable and productive album cycle than that of Teenage Dream.

Sales-wise (over 2 million albums sold domestically and over 5.5 million worldwide) the numbers don’t support this claim, but as you know—and as Katy Perry might’ve sung in her contemporary Christian past—man does not live on bread alone.

Vocal Injuries Strike Again! Florence and the Machine Cancel Two Festival Dates

Florence Welch is going to need a generous dosage of green tea to go with her two festival date cancellations. Florence and the Machine will no longer be performing in Benicassim in Spain on July 12th and Optimus Alive in Portugal on July 14th because Flo has “sustained a vocal injury” according to her personal twitter. She said of her famously eerie voice that she ”felt something snap, it was very frightening..” She later tweeted thanking her fans for their love and support.

We’ve seen what can happen when artists don’t take care of their most prized possession — their vocal cords. We’ve watch Adele fall victim to this again and again, having to cancel tours left and right, although it hasn’t exactly stunted her climb to the top of the charts. John Mayer had to cancel appearances as well and wasn’t able to promote his May 22 release, Born and Raised.

All we’re saying is take all the time you need, Flo, and rest up your perfect pipes! Everyone here at VH1 is wishing you a speedy recovery.

Men Lie, Women Lie, Numbers Don’t: Adele And Goyte Hold Down The Top Spots

It’s the second half of the year, folks, which means musically we’ve already experienced an abundance of extraordinary singles and albums with high levels of hope for the remainder of the year. 2012 hasn’t quite been a hit for any other artists in the way that it has for Adele and Gotye. According to HuffingtonPost, Adele’s 21 is the biggest seller in the U.S. having sold 3.69 million copies per Nielsen SoundScan. The amazing thing about Adele being the highest selling artist of this year is that her sophomore album 21 was released in January 2011 and has sold more than a million copies this year alone. At 23-years-old Adele is living the life–professionally she’s on top, and personally she’s in love and expecting her first child. Read more…
