2012 Grammy Awards Preview: Record & Song Of The Year

Year in and year out, people watching the Grammy Awards find themselves asking the same question: What is the difference between Record Of The Year and Song Of The Year? What makes this especially confusing is that different songs are usually nominated in each category; in the past five years, only 10 out of the 50 total songs nominated in each of these categories have made both categories (three of those, however, have ended up winning both prizes: “Need You Now” by Lady Antebellum, “Rehab” by Amy Winehouse and “Not Ready To Make Nice” by Dixie Chicks).

To answer the question we posed above, the Grammy for Record Of The Year is awarded to the artist and production team responsible for how the song sounds, while the Grammy for Song Of The Year is given to the songwriters responsible for the composition of the song (meaning: lyrics and melodic structure). With that in mind, here are a few likely candidates to be nominated in these two categories when the 2012 Grammy nominations are announced live on CBS at 10 p.m. ET/PT.

Adele, “Rolling In The Deep”
The smoky-voiced siren is the favorite to sweep this year’s major awards, and “Rolling In The Deep” has proven to be MASSIVE in terms of its sound and its popularity; it’s been sitting in the Billboard Hot 100 for 46 weeks and counting.

Bruno Mars, “Grenade”
Bruno was incredibly well-respected as a songwriter in music industry circles long before he became a solo performer; in the Grammys game, respect from one’s peers is equally important as commercial success.

Last Lap: Florence + The Machine Cover Drake And Rihanna’s “Take Care”

Florence + The Machine Cover Drake’s “Take Care”
Florence + The Machine covered Drake‘s “Take Care” on BBC Radio 1′s Live Lounge, and while the cover featured all the soaring, atmospheric vocals we love Florence Welch for, it missed the brooding darkness of Drake and Rihanna‘s original. [Spin]

Wyclef Jean’s Haiti Charity May Have Been Involved In Some Shady Spending
The books are allegedly failing to add up for Wyclef‘s Yele Haiti relief fund. The charity reportedly made $16 million in 2010, but only an alleged $5.1 million was spent on the relief effort. Wyclef is being defensive, and for Haiti’s sake, we hope he doesn’t turn out to be a swindler. [Billboard]

Imagined Personals Ads From Some Of Your Favorite Single Pop Stars

On a recently taped episode of The Ellen Degeneres Show, Rihanna got personal about her love life, revealing that she’s not dating anyone right now (Ed. Note — DM me, BB!). RiRi then went on to draft a personals ad for Ellen, revealing what she’s looking for, “I like men that are more aggressive but mysterious but I like a man to be very sure. I like them to be sure of themselves and know that you’re the man. I’m the lady and the only way for us to make this work is for us to play our roles. You know, I can’t really be the man for you. I don’t want to have to be. I’m the man at work all the time.” Rihanna’s perfect man criteria got us to thinking, and we took the liberty of creating some personals ads for some of our favorite single stars who are so awesome they definitely shouldn’t be single.

Lady Gaga
I’m looking for someone to love me for me, because I will love you for you, and that includes all your freaky business. Sure, I’m a monster (this will bode well for you in ‘special’ moments *wink*) but so are you. At least you should be. I only date other monsters. You must be tolerant of my many hats, wigs and vertiginous shoes. If you’re so inclined, you’d be free to share these things and borrow them for your own personal use. You should be creative and boundary pushing and passionate. Our relationship will be an art work, and we will perpetuate high-culture through our love.

Video Premiere: Adele, “Set Fire To The Rain (Live At The Royal Albert Hall)”

Like proud parents, we’re watching You Oughta Know alumna and VH1 Unplugged darling Adele attempt to maintain her chart-topping hot streak with the third single off her multiplatinum 21, “Set Fire To The Rain.” Rumor had it that “Rumor Has It” was going to be the third single, but “Fire” ended up winning out. Already a fan favorite, the mid-tempo power ballad has the potential to complete her hat trick of singles atop the Billboard Hot 100 this year.

Sadly, Adele’s recovery from vocal cord surgery kept her from shooting a concept video for “Set Fire To The Rain.” Instead, her camp released an exclusive performance from her forthcoming 90-minute concert film Live At The Royal Albert Hall (due in stores on November 29). It’s a departure from the beautiful, Jake Nava–directed “Someone Like You,” but “Set Fire To The Rain” clearly benefits from a concert setting more than it ever could from a four-minute mini-movie lip-synced on a sound stage. Watching the British belter’s chill-inducing pipes rise above the swelling sound of a full band and orchestra is a beauty all its own. It’s Adele in her element, sounding fabulous and looking, well, hot!

SNL Sagely Notes That Adele’s “Someone Like You” Turns Everyone Into A Blubbering Mess

As big as Adele‘s “Rolling In The Deep” was, her follow-up single, “Someone Like You,” is in a position to become the most memorable song from 21. Whereas “Rolling In The Deep” was defiant in its tone, “Someone Like You”—which, we should mention, is currently the #1 song on the VH1 Top 20 Video Countdown—instead allows Adele (and, by natural extension, the listeners) to wallow a bit in the feelings of anguish, hurt and regret that come on the heels of a difficult breakup. Well, the writers of Saturday Night Live recognized the seismic emotional impact that the song has had on people of all ages, shapes and sizes (even Coldplay!), and devoted a whole sketch to it on this weekend’s show.

Warning: The sketch might make you laugh, it might make you cry, and it very well make you do both at the same time. It’s one of the most memorable sketches of the season to this point, not just because it’s built around a song that everyone knows and adores, but because it recognizes a fundamental truth in today’s culture—no matter who you are, “Someone Like You” packs one hell of an emotional wallop!—and spins it for comedic gold. Now if you’ll excuse us, we have to go into the supply closet and have ourselves a good cry.

Adele Is On The Road To Recovery After Successful Vocal Cord Surgery

Breathe easy, folks. The Los Angeles Times is reporting that biggest selling artist of 2011, Adele, underwent successful vocal cord surgery in Boston yesterday. According to a jargon-laced statement from Massachusetts General Hospital, “Adele underwent vocal cord microsurgery by Dr. Steven Zeitels to stop recurrent vocal cord hemorrhage (bleeding) from a benign polyp. This condition is typically the result of unstable blood vessels in the vocal cord that can rupture … Dr. Zeitels expects Adele to make a full recovery from her laser microsurgery.” LASERS!

Two weeks ago, Adele canceled all of her planned 2011 concert dates to prepare for her encounter with Dr. Zeitels, who is something of an expert in this field. He successfully treated Aerosmith lead singer, American Idol judge and zeitgeisty 2011 Halloween costume-inspirer Steven Tyler back in 2006 after he was suffering from a similar ailment. We wish Adele a speedy recovery, and look forward to her getting back to bowling us over with her awesome vocal talent as soon as she’s up to it.
