Lily Allen Speaks Up About Adele’s Brits Acceptance Speech Being Cut Off
We miss the days when Lily Allen had a whole lot of stuff to say. Talking about Adele’s controversially cut short Brit Awards acceptance speech, Allen said “I’d rather hear Adele’s acceptance speech… I can’t say I’m surprised. It was like the music industry’s attitude to women played out as a metaphor.” [NME]
All next week, VH1 will be counting down a list of the 100 Greatest Women In Music. Each weeknight at 10 p.m. ET/PT beginning on Monday, February 13, a new hour-long episode of The Greatest will air on VH1, each show focusing in on the merits of the best female artists of the last 20 years and change.
As a precursor to the next week’s reveal, we thought that we’d kick off the discussion by revealing this list of 14 women who ALMOST made the list. They’re all terrific artists in their own right, which just goes to show how amazing the full list is going to be next week. This list of the Almost Greatest goes, as follows (in alphabetical order, natch):
Wally De Backer, better known by his stage name, Gotye, is already set up to be one of 2012′s biggest names. His 2011 album Making Mirrors found critical success in his home country of Australia, and the artist is preparing to spread his wings to hit America like Adele. With his intoxicatingly soothing voice, sudden hooks and high notes that shove you out of the comfortable reverie his verses induce, Goyte’s music is both thrilling and challenging, speaking to shared experiences with its honest lyricism.
1. “Somebody That I Used To Know”
“Somebody That I Used To Know” was a runway hit in Australia and its ripples have reached American shores with noticeable force. Dueting with another Australian up-and-coming superstar, Kimbra, Gotye taps into the messiness a breaking up — and the unexpectedly painful mundanities, like the simple act of returning each others belongings, that go with it. The sentiment of the song and Gotye’s cutting hook, coupled with the beautiful video and trickling graphics that match the melody, will have you stuck to your screen hitting repeat.
2. Creative Covers Of “Somebody That I Used To Know” Walk Off The Earth covered “Somebody That I Used To Know” using five people and one guitar and if possible, it’s just as compelling as the original. We love that Gotye’s music inspires such creative responses from such talented musicians, as opposed to the stock standard same-same style cover. The Roots affiliated STS also got creative with the song, using the melody and chorus to tell his own story (which at times is very humorous) of a break up (after the jump).
Bob Lefsetz may not have good music industry sense, but he sure has a good memory for personal feuds. The self-styled “First in Music Analysis” (who last week wrote that Tyler, the Creator’s Goblin didn’t have any online word of mouth) took a shot at Lily Allen in September 2009 after she decried filesharing on her myspace blog. Believing Allen’s complaints to actually be about Allen’s own relative lack of success in the United States, Lefsetz proceeded to criticize both her artistry and what he believed was an expectation of success due to birthright.
Last night Lefsetz rekindled the feud when Allen tweeted, “Everyone watch Case Histories on BBC1, my mummy produced it.” He fired back:
Apparently celebrities have everything they could ever want – except birth control! British songstress Lily Allen is expecting a baby with her boyfriend of three months, 37-year old Ed Simon of the Chemical Brothers. The pregnancy appears to be a bit of a surprise for the 22-year old Allen, who was spotted smoking just a couple of weeks ago. Her rep confirmed the baby news, saying “I am pleased to confirm that Lily and Ed are expecting their first baby. The health of Lily and her child is their paramount concern. As the pregnancy is at such an early stage, the couple will be making no further comment, but they are obviously thrilled by the news.”
Really? All Lily’s been doing lately is talking about how she loves being newly skinny thanks to a new diet put in place to help her heart murmur. Looks like she can go back to pigging out now! The singer said in November that she’d be ready to retire at 25, because her current career, “doesn’t leave time for what’s important. Like having a family.” So she’s off by three years, but her early retirement plan sounds perfect! We look forward to her keeping us all updated on her pregnancy via some crazy MySpace blog posts.
"I’m about to be arrested just as soon as I get back to England. I
punched a paparazzi in the face. There were 70 of them
surrounding me. And I left the country
the next day. They’re saying I’m going to be arrested as soon as
back. I could be Paris Hilton soon enough. Oh, my God, her life is so f***ing insane. She doesn’t even do anything. I can’t
wait until Lindsay Lohan goes to jail. ‘Boo hoo. I’m going to
Good. Does that mean you’ll stop showing me your p**** now?"
Oh Lily, please don’t ever stop telling it like it is. And just so you know, a stint in jail does not mean that Lindsay will stop flashing her lady-thang 24/7. That freckled mess is here to stay. Welcome to America.
The audiophiles over at Idolator are reporting that arch media personality and sometime recording artist Lily Allen has taken the feud between her and Amy Winehouse to the next level. Far from being satisfied with critiques from the sidelines, Allen has now taken to dressing up like the "Rehab" songstress to mock her. Yikes. (Full disclosure: Allen’s playing Winehouse on British comedy show Friday Night Project.) In other news, British police questioned Allen about her attack on a paparazzi photographer back in March. What a charming little spitfire she is.
Speaking to New York City weekly Time Out, British ragamuffin and sometime tour-canceller Lily Allen explained she has an addictive personality. She was a woman on the verge there for a while, but now she seems to have put things in perspective. Allen says she hasn’t touched any alcohol since January, and explained to the magazine that she knows the warning signs. "When you walk into your dressing room every night and there are 40 beers there, it?s difficult to not drink them all, you know? Like I said, I have a very addictive personality, and alcohol leads to other things. I don?t want to end up hanging over a toilet seat snorting coke when I?m 50." Lily’s smart. And if she’s interested in giving up music to go into counselling, we know a few people who could use her help.
In one brief MySpace entry, ska-pop princess Lily Allen reignited her war with fellow Brit Amy Winehouse and addressed the pressure she feels to be thin in the body-obsessed entertainment industry. Writing from "a sea of tears from my hotel bed in Seattle," the "Smile" singer tells fans she "spent the past hour researching gastric bypass surgery, and laser lipo suction." [sic] Allen’s MySpace confessional comes just weeks after cancelling nearly all of her tour dates due to feeling "tired." She has four remaining shows.
