Heavy Metal Hanukkah: 20 Head-Banging Hebrews

View Photo Gallery

Tonight at sundown the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah begins. The holiday, which will occur over the next eight nights days, celebrates the victory of Judah Maccabee and the ancient Judeans over the forces of Antiochus IV Epiphanes which already sounds like the subject of a totally awesome metal song. Given the New York City area’s rich hard rock tradition and large Jewish-American population it goes without saying that quite a few of our favorite head bangers have lit the Menorah. From old school hard rockers like Kiss and Mountain, through thrash heroes Anthrax and up to modern bands like Killswitch Engage and The Dillinger Escape Plan, Jewish musicians have played a huge role in the history of hard rock so this Hanukkah let’s light a candle and say l’chaim to 20 of the greatest Jewish metal heads of all time.

Can You Guess These Thrash Metal Titans?

ThrashMain
Thirty years ago this summer thrash metal came ripping out of America’s West Coast with the release of Metallica’s Kill ‘Em All. The band and their “Big Four” brethren; Slayer, Megadeth and Anthrax, were influenced in equal parts by the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal and hardcore punk, grafting the musicianship of the former to the aggression and social consciousness of the latter and laying down a musical gauntlet that made metal’s old guard take notice and the bedazzled glam bands quake in their patent leather cowboy boots. The ecstatic reception of the recent “Big Four” concerts, which featured the above bands on a single bill for the first time, and new bands that carry the flame such as Lamb Of God and Gojira testify to the genre’s enduring popularity and importance. Take a gander at some of these guitarists from thrash metal’s biggest and best bands and see if you can identify the shredders from their axes alone.

That Metal Debate: Top 5 Facial Hair Styles of Rock

There are a few important factors that make hard rock and heavy metal music one of THE best genres in music:
1. Musicians who can head bang and hold a chord
2. The fans (that’s a no-brainer)
3. Facial Hair

I know you probably think we are crazy for even saying that, but can you imagine Ozzy Osbourne with a mustache like Tom SelleckZakk Wylde with a unibrow? Or maybe even KISS with ZZ Top beards? Strange right? (We can only imagine how long it would take to get the paint out.)

Last week on That Metal Show, we were joined by Steve Harris (Iron Maiden) and John 5 who brought nothing less than amazing riffs for the second week in a row as our guest musician. We also paid homage to the rockers with the best facial hair and counted down our TMS Top 5 Facial Hair in Rock with help from heavy metal rocker Marilyn Manson. Here’s our TMS Top 5 list of artists with the Best Facial Hair in Rock:

That Metal Debate: That Metal Show‘s Top 5 Best Albums of This Century

This week on That Metal Show, we were joined by Lemmy (Motörhead), Jerry Dixon and Robert Mason (Warrant), and Michael Schenker, who rocked out as our guest musician for the second week in a row. For our TMS Top 5 segment we decided to have the hosts come up with the Top 5 Albums of this century. There aren’t THAT many bands out there, so it shouldn’t be so hard, right? Let’s get started.

How do you choose from Tesla’s album; Into the Now (with the original band, mind you), Buckcherry’s comeback record; 15, Accept’s; Blood of The Nations, which ended up on both Eddie and Don’s list, it’s a tough choice. You also have the underrated band like Hatebreed, who released Perseverance back in 2002 and The Blackening by Machine Head who is Jim’s “modern day Master of Puppets” (Metallica). Which, of course, is debatable. So, what ended up on the list? We’ve got it for you below.
