That Metal Debate: That Metal Show‘s Top 5 Best Albums of This Century

This week on That Metal Show, we were joined by Lemmy (Motörhead), Jerry Dixon and Robert Mason (Warrant), and Michael Schenker, who rocked out as our guest musician for the second week in a row. For our TMS Top 5 segment we decided to have the hosts come up with the Top 5 Albums of this century. There aren’t THAT many bands out there, so it shouldn’t be so hard, right? Let’s get started.

How do you choose from Tesla’s album; Into the Now (with the original band, mind you), Buckcherry’s comeback record; 15, Accept’s; Blood of The Nations, which ended up on both Eddie and Don’s list, it’s a tough choice. You also have the underrated band like Hatebreed, who released Perseverance back in 2002 and The Blackening by Machine Head who is Jim’s “modern day Master of Puppets” (Metallica). Which, of course, is debatable. So, what ended up on the list? We’ve got it for you below.

That Metal Show Sneak Peek: Find Out Why The Dokken Reunion Never Ended Up Happening

Last week on That Metal Show, we were joined by Scott Ian (Anthrax) who helped us with the TMS Top 5, Alice Cooper, Jack Russell (Great White) and Brian Tichy who rocked out on the drums. (Did you miss it? Watch it online here!)

This week, we welcome back Slash, who is here to help us with another celebrity edition of the TMS Top 5. We are also joined by Mick Brown, Jeff Pilson, and George Lynch of the newly founded T&N. The guys address rumors and talk all things Dokken. Our guest musician for the week is …wait for it…BRIAN TICHY! Brian Tichy is back for a second week and will be speed bagging and drumming at the same time, which is pretty cool if you ask us. A brand new episode of That Metal Show airs this Saturday at 11 p.m. ET/10 CT on VH1 Classic.

That Metal Debate: That Metal Show Top 5 Guitar Duos

This week on That Metal Show, we had Alice Cooper, Jack Russell (Great White), and Brian Tichy rockin’ out on drums. We also asked Scott Ian (Anthrax) to stop by and be our first ever celebrity guest to participate in the “TMS Top 5,” and he helped us figure out the Top 5 Guitar duos of all-time. With all of the hard rock and heavy metal bands out there, it was pretty tough to come up with just five, but as you know, it’s called the “TMS Top 5,” so we’re keeping with tradition.

That Metal Show: Take A Special Sneak Peek At This Weekend’s Alice Cooper / Jack Russell Episode

Season 10 of That Metal Show got off to a thrashing start last week when Lars Ulrich (Metallica) and Robb Flynn (Machine Head) stopped by to hang with Eddie, Don and Jim. (Did you miss it? No sweat, you can watch it online right now!)

As you’ve come to expect, more great guests will be stopping by the set this week. Specifically, we’ve got Scott Ian (Anthrax) stopping by, Jack Russell (Great White), Brian Tichy on the drums, and we also welcome back Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Member Alice Cooper (who, as you’ll learn in our video clip above, apparently once pointed a loaded gun at Elvis!). The new episode of That Metal Show airs this Saturday at 11/10c on VH1 Classic.

Shearer’s Spotlight: Jim’s Top 5 Favorite Rock/Rap Pairings

Jim Shearer

Each week here on VH1 Tuner, our VH1 Top 20 Video Countdown host Jim Shearer (@jimshearer on Twitter) will be sharing his Shearer’s Spotlight with us. Be sure to tune into the VH1 Top 20 Video Countdown tomorrow morning when it airs on VH1 at 9 a.m. ET/PT.

It was recently announced that Cash Money Records latest recruit, Limp Bizkit, will release a collaborative single next week with label mate Lil’ Wayne. As you may know, the fusion of a mainstream rock and hip-hop act is nothing new in music.

Here are my five all-time favorite rock/rap pairings:

5. “Airplanes,” B.o.B & Hayley Williams of Paramore
This song helped spread Hayley Williams’ wings — at least for me — as more than a front-person in an emo band. Her vocals on the chorus blend superbly with B.o.B’s rhyme flow. This track, about the downsides of fame, was inescapable during the summer of 2010.

4. “Clint Eastwood,” Gorillaz & Del tha Funkee Homosapien
Though we were lead to believe an animated band played this gem in the early ‘00s, it was a genius collaboration between real human beings: Blur’s Damon Albarn, producer Dan The Automator and rapper Del tha Funkee Homosapien. It wasn’t hard for the public to latch on to this one; it clicked on so many levels.

Twelve Photos Of Metal Legends Being Totally Un-Metal

“Metal dudes are people, too!” you shout, and we hear ya, we honestly do. But here’s the thing — we like to live under the fantasy, however inaccurate, that metal dudes just do totally awesome metal stuff all the time. We want to believe that metal dudes go around biting the heads off bats, smashing guitars, sticking it to the man and headbanging ALL THE TIME. The same way we like to believe that pop stars all eat, sleep and go to the gym in their elaborate costumes, rappers freestyle battle each other in the street and country singers all know how to lasso like cowboys.

Obviously, the illusions we live under (yes, we’re twisted, we know, but being twisted is like, SO metal), are unrealistic, and we have to admit we get a perverted sense of pleasure when the wall does come down. So if you want to see what metal dudes are doing when they’re not being metal, and just being sort of, well, regular, click through to our gallery below! Beware: there are images of James Hetfield WEARING A KNITTED SCARF! Slipknot‘s Corey Taylor READING BOOKS! Megadeth‘s Dave Mustaine HANGING OUT WITH A GEORGE W. BUSH IMPERSONATOR! If this is all just too much for you and all you want is to see metal guys being, like, totally metal, then check out National Metal Day on VH1 Classic, airing all day today!

Shearer’s Spotlight: On National Metal Day, We Reveal Jim Shearer’s Top 4 Metal Moments

Jim Shearer Celebrates National Metal Day

Each week here on VH1 Tuner, our VH1 Top 20 Video Countdown host Jim Shearer (@jimshearer on Twitter) will be sharing his Shearer’s Spotlight with us. Be sure to tune into the Top 20 Countdown tomorrow morning when it airs on VH1 at 9 a.m. ET/PT.

Jim Shearer's Spotlight

Jim Shearer

If you haven’t heard—or haven’t tuned into VH1 Classic today—today is National Metal Day. I may not strike you as a headbanger, but let it be known, I fancy all genres of music.

So keeping in theme with the day, here are my Big 4 Metal Moments:

4.) Headbanging With Anthrax
In 2003 when MTV2 revived the metal franchise Headbanger’s Ball, a kickoff concert was held in Cleveland where I got to give a rousing introduction to thrash metal legends, Anthrax. Since we we’re in Cleveland—home of the Browns—I decided to get everyone’s blood boiling early by coming out on stage dressed in Pittsburgh Steelers colors and waving a Terrible Towel. It worked to perfection!

Shearer’s Spotlight: Spitballing Some Ideas For Other Potential Big 4 Festivals

Each Friday here on the VH1 Blog, our VH1 Top 20 Video Countdown host Jim Shearer (@jimshearer on Twitter) will be sharing his Shearer?s Spotlight with us. Be sure to tune into the Top 20 Countdown tomorrow morning when it airs on VH1 at 9 a.m. ET/PT.

Next Wednesday, Sept. 14, the Big 4 Festival will descend upon Yankee Stadium in New York City. The participants will include the ?big four? bands (i.e., pillars, staples, torch bearers, etc.) of thrash metal music: Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, and Anthrax. Here are some other acts that could pull off a Big 4 Festival of their own:

1) Big 4 of Millennial Pop: Britney Spears, *NSYNC, Christina Aguilera, Backstreet Boys
This past summer, the Backstreet Boys created some buzz when they toured with their boy-band predecessors, New Kids On The Block, as NKOTBSB; but could you imagine the pandemonium they could create by teaming up with late ?90s peer/rival, *NSYNC? The reunions alone would sell tickets on this tour: Justin and *NSYNC, Justin and Britney, Britney and Christina, and three old Mouseketeers back together again.

Quakin’ – Songs To Help You Cope With Today’s Eastern Seaboard Earthquake

If you were anywhere on the Eastern seaboard in the last hour or so, you no doubt felt the effect of an earthquake that registered 5.9 on the Richter Scale. Here in Times Square at VH1 HQ, we felt the building sway and bounce uncomfortably for a good five or six seconds. Everyone seems to be okay, if a bit freaked out.

In order to help you (and us!) calm down on this hectic afternoon, we just created the following playlist of earthquake-themed songs for all you Spotify users out there:
Quakin’ – Songs To Help You Cope With The 2011 New York City Earthquake

(If you’re not on Spotify, this room on Turntable.fm also just cropped up: Earthquake 2K11.)

Full playlist for you after the jump:
