Happy Birthday To Black Sabbath’s Tony Iommi! Check Out The Evolution Of His Facial Hair!

View Photo Gallery

Today, February 19th, marks the 66th birthday of one of the architects of heavy metal, the master of riffs, legendary Black Sabbath and Heaven and Hell guitarist Tony Iommi. Without the sound itself of his Gibson SG plugged into a wall of amp stacks the genre as we know it might very well not even exist. As well as being a sonic pioneer in the world of ultra-heavy evil riffing, Mr. Iommi is also a trendsetter in the world of rock facial hair. Though he’s gone clean shaven from time to time, he is best known for sporting any number of variations on the mustache.  Whether it’s the early peach-fuzz  of the Sabbath’s early days,  the manly handlebar ‘stache of the band’s Golden Years, or his recent forays into goatees, Mr. Iommi’s facial hair is a major part of his image and one of the many things that makes him such a badass. So in honor of his birthday let’s stroll down memory lane and take a gander of the facial hair evolution of Tony Iommi.

20 Metal Bands That Are So Awesome They Named Songs After Themselves

SelfieText

The name remains the same. Or at least it does for the following bands. Ever since heavy metal pioneers Black Sabbath kicked off the album Black Sabbath with the song “Black Sabbath” many have taken a cue from the masters and saved their most killer riffs for songs that embody the band themselves in both spirit and literally, in name. From Motorhead, whose first single was the classic “Motorhead,” through thrashers like Anthrax and Exodus and all the way up to modern day ragers Children Of Bodom and Dimmu Borgir, the theme or signature song is an essential part of heavy metal’s tribal culture. Hell, it’s such a cool thing to do even hardcore punk bands like Minor Threat and Bad Religion got into the act, but hey, that’s a different list. Anyhow, scroll through the pages, stream the videos and check out 20 kick ass metal jams that are named after their creators very own kick ass metal bands.  Read more…

Eddie Trunk Puts “Clueless” Grammys On Blast For Years Of Metal Neglect!

615x462
The Grammy Awards has had a long history of ignoring hard rock and heavy metal ever since the genre emerged screaming from the womb of late ‘60s rock. Consider that such legendary bands as Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath never received a single Grammy Award during their existences and years later were only awarded for live recording from their reunion shows. Last night’s show seemingly went to lengths to include hard rock and metal with performances by Metallica and Queens Of The Stone Age though metal fans have been rightfully outraged about Slayer guitarist Jeff Hanneman being excluded from the In Memorium montage. in DJ, author and host of VH1 Classic’s That Metal Show, Eddie Trunk is one of hard rock and metal’s biggest fans and greatest advocates and has long been critical of the genre’s treatment by the mainstream media in general and institutions like The Grammys and The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in particular. We asked Eddie to share his thoughts on last night’s show and why the music still never gets the respect it deserves all these years later. Read more…

Middle-Earth Anthems: 10 Classic Hard Rock Songs That Pay Homage To The Hobbit

HOBBIT_MAIN_ART
Since their publication in the 1930’s J. R. R. Tolkien’s  books, The Hobbit and The Lord Of The Rings cycle,  have been inspiring people with the mythical tales of the people of Middle-earth and the struggle between the forces of good and evil. During the psychedelic ‘60s the books became extremely popular in the rock underground and no shortage of bands paid homage to the series in lyrics, song titles and band names. Legendary hard rockers Led Zeppelin practically made a career out of referencing them, both figuratively and often literally. Their heavy metal progeny picked up the helm and to this day many metal bands are named after figures and places in the book including such current black metal bands as Darkthrone and Gorgoroth among others. The latest movie installment, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, opens today so in honor we’re taking a look at some of the greatest references to the series in classic hard rock. So pack your pipe, don your magical cloak and spend some time with these Middle-earth anthems to get in the mood for the film. Read more…
