Ryan Gosling has a mighty sexy plus-one; so does Brad Pitt. But when you’re talking about the flyest wives and girlfriends, ever — we’re talking Beyonce, folks — they aren’t found in Hollywood, they’re in hip hop.
The noise had become deafening. Nicki Minaj listened to the clamor of critics who claim she abandoned hip-hop for pop. She got the unwarranted memo and responded with Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded The Re-Up. The message she’s conveying is simple: I can still rap. Don’t get it twisted.
After her sophomore release she caught flack for seemingly trading in the flow of a hungry emcee from Jamaica, Queens to appease an audience whose most played songs on their iTunes were sung by Justin Bieber. On the balladry “Freedom” she drops clues that she’s not at all oblivious to the chatter. “Did I really body bitches with commercial songs?” she boasts. It’s liberation Nicki seeks, not approval. This week’s Friday Face-Off is between Kanye West and Britney Spears because they both have futuristic-theme music videos for their respective “Stronger” tracks. Plus, when you think about it, aren’t Britney and Kanye are basically the same person? Hear me out before deafening me with a chorus of “haah?!” and pelting me with Team Britney, B**** T-Shirts. Both are one-name-recognizable lightening rods for controversy, and despite head-shaving, crotch flashing (yes, both) and speaking before thinking too many times to count, they’ve remained musical juggernauts. Mind explosion, right? Now you tell us whose “Stronger” dominates.
Can’t knock the hustle. Yes, this girl’s hustle speaks for itself. When Nicki Minaj announced on MTV News the release of Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded The Re-Up there were a few major side-eyes. PFRR wasn’t exactly well received by critics. But the Barbz were excited for the re-release with eight new songs including her two recent singles “The Boys” featuring Cassie and “Va Va Voom.” With a little over two weeks until the November 19th release Nicki gave the Barbz a special treat by releasing the tracklist for the forthcoming project. And there’s no verse from Drake. Bummer. Read more…
Nicki Minaj has made more than her share of bright and sexy videos, but this is by far the brightest and the sexiest of the bunch. The Colin Tilley-directed video for “The Boys,” a new cut from Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded — The Re-Up, just hit the web, and it’s splashed with predictably eye-popping colors and generous with the ever ogle-able Nicki and her “real pretty” pal Cassie. While Cassie looks great in a high-cut one piece, this video centered around Nicki going crazy on a barber shop. What happened, Nicki? Did they give you a bad haircut?
Nicki Minaj announced earlier this week that she would be re-releaseing Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded as The Re-Up this November, and that the first of “lots of new songs on there” would be out this week. Then, during a tweeted question-and-answer session about the re-up, she let slip that she would be joined by another woman for the first single, and teased that “she’s real pretty.” “The Boys,” the promised single, premiered today on iTunes, and Bad Boy’s Cassie is featured on the hook. So it looks like Nicki meant it, this time, when she said her collaborator would be “real pretty,” eh?
Returned from the arms of Diddy to the studio, Cassie sings here of a world where the boys are “always spending all their money on love,” lamenting also that “diamond watches and a gold chain can’t make my frown turn around.” And she would know. Meanwhile with Cassie sultry on the hook, Nicki is relieved of pop-star duties and free to go in as she pleases. Leaning into the lazer-riddled, marching band beat, she spits to the boys: “I told Nicki be chillin/ I’ma keep hurtin’ your feelings/ Because you could never be Jordan/ You couldn’t even be Pippen.” She’ll keep her real pretty friend, though: “You made dusty/ You a lil dusty possum/ I come through with the Six like my name was Blossom.”
