Do You Agree With Billboard Crowning Rihanna The Top Pop Artist Of The Last 20 Years?

Billboard Crowns Rihanna Top Pop Artist Of The Last 20 Years

Is Rihanna worthy of the gold throne she’s seated in, in the above photo? Billboard thinks so as they’ve chosen her as the top pop artist of the last 20 years. With only seven years under her belt Rihanna beat out veterans Janet Jackson, Mariah Carey, Jennifer Lopez, Usher and Celine Dion. As far as her peers she toppled her bestie Katy Perry, Beyonce, Lady Gaga and Chris Brown. Part of Riri’s success can be attributed to her ability to dish out catchy hit after hit. Her hooks hook you. No pun intended. The chorus and hooks immediately come to mind when you hear just the titles of “We Found Love,” “Where Have You Been,” “Umbrella,” “Birthday Cake” and countless others. Is Rihanna’s formula for mastering an infectious song why she leaves her counterparts slouching in the dust? Read more…

BRACKET MADNESS: Does Celine Dion’s Voice Or Mariah Carey’s Hits Matter More?

You wouldn’t want to go up against Celine Dion or Mariah Carey if there were some sort of singing competition similar to a battle rap. Whether both of them possess the pipes to ease through each note as if they were born to sing isn’t arguable. What is debatable for our Bracket Madness is which one should have the chance in the next round to take the crown for greatest artist of the 90s. Celine Dion has the voice and hefty album sells while Mariah has the voice and No. 1 hit singles. The 90s definitely was good to them, but both of these extraordinary singers have timelessly created timeless music that spans well past the 90s era. Read more…

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: Jordin Sparks On Whitney Houston Teaching Her Not To Be Ashamed Of Your Past

Jordin Sparks has come a long way from belting out Celine Dion‘s “Because You Love Me” in her audition for American Idol at 16. At 17, she won that very season. Five years later the big voiced singer has landed the role of a lifetime as Sparkle Williams in the 1976 remake of Sparkle and her duet with Whitney Houston,”Celebrate,” is the lead single from the upcoming film. And in her wildest dreams she never imagined working with the indelible Houston who plays her mother Emma. Although Whitney’s time may have been cut short from us here on earth, we talked to Jordin Sparks about the invaluable lessons she learned from the woman often referred to as The Voice. Read more…

Celine Dion Belts Out A Cover Of Adele’s “Rolling In The Deep”

Patti Smith has done it, as have Childish Gambino and Jamie XX and probably also everyone else you know with a YouTube account. And now we have Celine Dion, legendary chanteuse, adding to the cannon and giving Adele‘s “Rolling in the Deep” a go of her own. Obviously, she kills it.

Powerful and sultry, Dion’s cover is at once faithful to the Grammy-sweeping original and worthy of its place in Dion’s hugely successful Vegas show. According to the Las Vegas Sun, the cover takes the place of that the Michael Jackson medley she did in runs past. It may also show up on her upcoming album, Water and Flame, which will include covers, some new material, and a duet with Ne-Yo.

“I love Adele so much. She’s amazing,” Celine professed to the approving Sin City crowd. So do we, Celine. So do we.

Supercut: Divas Say Some Nice Things And Some Catty Things About Each Other

Divas take on divas in this supercut from our old VH1 cohort Rich Juzwiak in which the first ladies of pop music wax lyrical on their contemporaries. From the heartfelt, gushing rants of love and affection by Lady Gaga and Britney Spears over Madonna, to the ambiguous relationship between Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey, to the decidedly more acerbic back-and-forths between Madonna, Janet Jackson, Whitney and Cher, the video spans the gambit of famous diva on diva mouth-offs. As is mentioned several times in the super cut, it’s a shame that female performers are often cast in such a catty light, and often poked and prodded by prying reporters. As Christina Aguilera so sagely points out, “it just sucks that as women we have to deal with that comparison thing that men don’t necessarily have to.” Amen sister. Now can we all just kiss and make up? We’re looking at you Celine!

If you’d like to see divas being friends and doing what they do best — belting out their awesome hits — tune in for VH1′s DIVAS Celebrates Soul premiering Monday, December 19 at 9 p.m. ET/8 CT on VH1.
