10 Times When Auto-Tuning Totally Worked

autotune_art

By Christopher Rosa

It’s not hard to record a song nowadays—a laptop, GarageBand and microphone are all one needs to crank out a decent track. And with the magic of Auto-Tune, you can even sound pitch perfect. It’s no surprise that artists flock to this tool to amp up their game, some abusing it to disguise the fact that they can’t really sing at all. It’s like a pop P.E.D.! But music’s most notorious tool isn’t always used for evil.

Diane Warren Songs You Secretly Love (And Belt Out Alone In The Shower)

455770839

During the ‘90s it was next to impossible to turn on the radio and not hear a Diane Warren song — it’s just that you may have never realized you were listening to a Diane Warren song. The prolific songwriter had a huge career over the past three decades penning hits for Aerosmith, Toni Braxton, Celine Dion, and LeAnn Rimes. (The same artists that dominated VH1 back in the heyday of music videos.) At one point she had seven hits by seven different artists on the Billboard Hot 100 at the same time.

After awhile, Warren songs became recognizable for their distinct sound. Typically a power ballad, Warren’s music incorporated heartbreak-fueled lyrics, drippy orchestral arrangements, and—most likely—Dion’s signature wail. While Warren produced hit after hit, her songs weren’t exactly ones that you blasted at parties. Instead, you found yourself secretly singing them in the shower, or alone in the car, or even at high school talent shows—just to prove how talented you were.

Last Lap: Kelly Clarkson Gives “Mr. Know It All” A Sweet Country Remix

Kelly Clarkson Gives “Mr. Know It All” A Sweet Country Remix
We’re really digging Kelly Clarkson‘s country-style recording of “Mr. Know It All”. It’s like someone took one of our most favorite things and bedazzled it or added a kicky beret — we love the original, but we love the upgrade too! [Pop Dust]

Cher Is Not Dead
Poor Cher was the subject of an internet death hoax, but it turns out that she’s thankfully alive and well. While we haven’t yet seen a cheesily wonderful Jon Bon Jovi display of life, we think there’s still time for Cher to post a photo with a sign saying something like, “Do you believe in life after Twitter hoax?” [NME]

Welcome To The World Of Famous Musical Offspring, Blue Ivy Carter! (PS: Here’s How Fast Your Peers Got On Stage)

This weekend, the world welcomed baby Blue Ivy Carter, the offspring of Beyoncé and Jay-Z, and possibly the most important baby on earth right now (or ever, who knows?) into its open arms. After months of speculation, second guessing, and red herrings, the baby girl is finally here and now we’ve got a whole new set of questions to deal with. For starters: When are we going to see baby Blue Ivy? Do you think she’s made of gold or magic or sparkles? Does she have super powers? Will she grow up to fulfill Mom and Dad’s musical legacy? And if so, how long do we have to wait to hear the chosen one’s voice on a record?

With all these questions in mind, we tracked down some other famous babies with musician parents, found out how long it took them to get from the womb to the recording studio, and employed the law of averages to try and figure out when we can expect Blue Ivy’s first number one song. According to the following cross section, we’re expecting Blue Ivy to lay down her first album by age 11…

  • Sean Lennon, son of John Lennon and Yoko Ono. In 1981, at the age of 5, Sean recited a story on his mother’s album Season of Glass.

  • Hailie Jade Mathers, daughter of Marshall Mathers a.k.a Eminem. At age 6, Hailie’s vocal was featured on Eminem’s “My Dad’s Gone Crazy”.
  • Chloe Lattanzi, daughter of Olivia Newton John. At age 8, Chloe provided backing vocals for “The Way Of Love” from Olivia’s 1994 album Gaia.

Supercut: Divas Say Some Nice Things And Some Catty Things About Each Other

Divas take on divas in this supercut from our old VH1 cohort Rich Juzwiak in which the first ladies of pop music wax lyrical on their contemporaries. From the heartfelt, gushing rants of love and affection by Lady Gaga and Britney Spears over Madonna, to the ambiguous relationship between Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey, to the decidedly more acerbic back-and-forths between Madonna, Janet Jackson, Whitney and Cher, the video spans the gambit of famous diva on diva mouth-offs. As is mentioned several times in the super cut, it’s a shame that female performers are often cast in such a catty light, and often poked and prodded by prying reporters. As Christina Aguilera so sagely points out, “it just sucks that as women we have to deal with that comparison thing that men don’t necessarily have to.” Amen sister. Now can we all just kiss and make up? We’re looking at you Celine!

If you’d like to see divas being friends and doing what they do best — belting out their awesome hits — tune in for VH1′s DIVAS Celebrates Soul premiering Monday, December 19 at 9 p.m. ET/8 CT on VH1.
