Yesterday, we successfully brought you the VH1 staff’s favorite albums of 2013 without any bloodshed, and we’re happy to report that no one’s brain exploded while trying to narrow down the amazing albums of 2013 into a concise list. However, now it’s time to talk about how most people listen to music these days: By the song.
Every year there’s always a crop of breakout stars but what about those who have been around for awhile? 2013 saw the return of a number of artists who raced back to prominence by topping the charts. Among the most notable returns are Justin Timberlake and Daft Punk, both of who released new albums after nearly almost a decade of no new music. The easily dominated the year in music thanks to their radio-friendly jams and diehard fans’ zealous appetite.
All summer you voted on your favorite jams of the summer as two songs were put up against each other in a head to head battle. Acts like Robin Thicke and Selena Gomez didn’t have the stamina to make it past the first round. While others, like Mariah Carey and P!nk, proved they had staying power. End of summer is here and so is the final round of the Battle Of The Summer Jams. Each week you voted on songs that you thought best represented your summer and now it’s time to determine which song will reign supreme. Many artists put up a good fight but didn’t have the juice to make it to the finals. Something unexpected happened this summer: Instead of buzzing about new artists, most of the attention was focused on established acts returning to the spotlight. Daft Punk kicked off a summer of nostalgia that included the original line up of Backstreet Boys, Ciara charting again, disco making a comeback and Nile Rodgers. Nile Rodgers, man! When Daft Punk‘s “Get Lucky” officially dropped back in April, most prognosticators dubbed it Song Of The Summer material. Over the course of the last few months, that prediction has come true, as the infectious track has been dueling Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines” and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’ “Can’t Hold Us” for the unofficial SOTS crown.
