Die Antwoord’s New Lady Gaga Slaying Video, And A Quick History Of Pop Star Parodying Music Videos

Eccentric South African rap-ravers Die Antwoord have set alight with their provocative new video for “Fatty Boom Boom.” The video is as complicated an act as they are — it at one point finds the duo donning what appears to be blackface, and there is a worthwhile exploration of that element here — and worth unpacking a bit, particularly the part where they totally clown on Lady Gaga and her taste for “freaky things.”

The video begins with a tour guide welcoming a Lady Gaga doppelgänger to Africa with a tour of South Africa’s “Concrete Jungle,” where stoplights are called “robots” and shop owners keep black panthers as guard cats. When they come across Ninja and Yo-Landi Vi$$er performing on the sidewalk, Gaga pauses to admire their “freaky fashion” and has just begun to wonder if she might “get them to open for me” — a gig they’ve actually turned down — when the van gets highjacked. Gaga sets off running and somehow winds up at a dentist/gynecologist’s office, where she births a gross and goo-covered bug because she is indeed the Mother Monster. And in the end, they let the Lion King of the Concrete Jungle eat her. Read more…

Lollapalooza Day One Recap: Raging Teens, Raging Heat And The Glorious Black Keys

The 100-degree heat index did not deter 90,000 mostly-young people from descending upon Grant Park in their finest fringed crop tops, body glitter and neon cutoffs everything. There was a visible “sweat cloud” lingering over the crowd, but that didn’t stop anyone from dancing their hearts out and jamming to some of the hottest names in rock, electropop and dubstep. As I mainline coffee and chug gallons of water in preparation for Day Two, allow me to review some of the uber-sweaty highlights, accompanied by GIFs, naturally.

From the glisten of her sequined top to the slick sweat on her legs, Metric‘s Emily Haines shined in both appearance and performance. With seemingly impossible energy, Haines ran around the stage with a tambourine, belting out some vintage (and by vintage, we mean 2003) goodies like “Dead Disco” to new gems like “Lost Kitten” from this year’s Synthetica.

Tuned In: K’naan And Nelly Furtado Play The Summery “Is Anybody Out There?”

K’naan and Nelly Furtado teamed up on The Late Show With David Letterman last night to play their decidedly summery track “Is Anybody Out There?”. With a Gym Class Heroes “Stereo Hearts” vibe, the song is infectious and thought provoking. Nelly Furtado showed a more demure side in a trench and glasses, but that didn’t stop her from pulling some big dance moves the whole way through the performance. The song is from K’nann’s new EP More Beautiful Than Silence, and we think it might be a bit of a favorite for sunny spring afternoons.

Tuned In: Pitbull Brings Affection From Abroad With “International Love”

Pitbull was all about affection from abroad last night on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, performing his track “International Love.” The high energy, thumping dance track was met with flashing lights and Pitbull’s signature sunglasses at night. There was even a Super Bowl theme which was pertinent given this week’s game, as Pitbull rapped, “I don’t play football but I touchdown everywhere.” We’re pretty sure there’s some dirty innuendo intended in that line — but what would a Pitbull song be without it? It also looked pretty warm up there on the stage, as Pitbull and his band glistened with sweat — but then we realized that was probably just Pitbull bringing the heat to the euro dance beat.
