Innuendo is for squares! Sure, lots of songs hide behind metaphors when it comes to sex—they want their CAKE CAKE CAKE and they want to eat it, too!—but we have to give props to the following 20 artists who went ahead and recorded themselves she (and he!) bopping themselves in the recording booth and put it out on record. We’d like to salute the following aural pioneers for being bold enough to push the envelope—not to mention our buttons—and get a bit freaky deaky in the stu.
Who is JOHNNYSWIM? Well, for starters, they are VH1’s latest You Oughta Know artist. And although the origins of the name JOHNNYSWIM remain clouded in mystery, the husband/wife duo of Abner Ramirez and Amanda Sudano-Ramirez are ready to let their remarkable music do the talking.
What an amazing evening! The 2012 edition of VH1 DIVAS was chock full of unforgettable moments, ones that you can fortunately watch over-and-over again thanks to the miracle of streaming video. However, for all the show-stopping performances that you saw on VH1 tonight during the broadcast, there were a plethora of precious moments you weren’t privy to that happened backstage and off-camera. To that end, we had some VH1 insiders strategically placed all around the Shrine Auditorium tonight keeping their eyes, ears and camera lenses open all night long for those special moments that our TV cameras weren’t able to capture. And, seeing that it’s the holidays and all, the giving spirit is coursing through our veins and we thought we’d share some of the highlights with you.
So now, without further ado, here are the Top 16 Things That You Didn’t See On TV During VH1 DIVAS:
1. American Idol alumnus Adam Lambert ran out to greet the original Idol, Kelly Clarkson, and the two shared a warm hug just minutes before show time backstage. Adam did a little turn showing off his duds.
2. Speaking of the newly engaged Kelly Clarkson, she showed off her sparkly yellow canary diamond ring to a friend a few moments before she performed “Catch My Breath.” We overheard her saying “He did so good, didn’t he?” and “I was freaking out when he went down on one knee and all.” A clearly emotional Kelly also admitted on her way off-stage that “I can’t believe I almost totally cried on television!”
Paying tribute to the late, great Donna Summer tonight were VH1 DIVAS 2012 host Adam Lambert, the always amazing Kelly Rowland, and the divine Keri Hilson. Their medley of “I Feel Love,” “Bad Girls,” “She Works Hard For The Money,” (Hilson solo) “Love To Love You Baby,” (Rowland solo) “Hot Stuff,” (Lambert solo) and “Last Dance” was an appropriately energetic tribute to the woman whose disco-infused sounds dominated the charts in the late 70s and early 80s. Donna Summer will always be missed, and while we’re sad that the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame didn’t get around to inducting this legendary performer until after she passed away, we’re very much proud to have honored her this evening and look forward to her RRHOF induction in the spring of 2013. Adam Lambert is just like us! No, really. Okay, so, we’re not hostingVH1 Divas, selling multi-platinum records or breaking glass with our voices. But, when it comes to recalling music lyrics, Adam has the same problem we do: “I forget the words to my own songs!”
Adam tested his self-proclaimed forgetfulness in our “Name That Divas’ Song” game. He read lines from well-known hits by Whitney Houston, Donna Summer and Kelly Rowland then tried to match the lyrics to the song and artist. How did he do? See for yourself. And watch Divas live Sunday, December 16 9PM/8C to see if Adam got the words right as show host and performer.
This year’s class includes an eclectic mix — a disco diva, lady rockers, prog-rock legends, hip-hop pioneers, a guitar hero and, um, Randy Newman (none like him!) among them — and they make for worthy bunch, to be sure. We’re particularly thrilled to see that first time nominees Public Enemy and Rush, as well as VH1 Divas honoree Donna Summer and our favorite female rockers, have made the cut. But we have to ask, what about those who were passed over?
VH1 DIVAS will be airing live on Sunday, December 16 at 9PM ET/8C, and after having to keep our lips zipped for the last few weeks, we’re excited to finally start letting you in on some of the details. We could not be more psyched to announce that the one and only Adam Lambert will be hosting, and the evening will be led by outstanding performances by the likes of Ciara, Miley Cyrus, Demi Lovato, Kelly Rowland and Jordin Sparks. And yes, the evening will be featuring special and memorable tributes to the late legends Whitney Houston and Donna Summer, both of whom were VH1 Divas alumni.
We’ll have more details to share with you over the coming weeks leading up to Sunday, December 16, but until then, here’s the complete press release that JUST hit the wires.

The RRHOF’s induction process is mysterious and secretive, so you don’t see the same kind of public campaigning by nominees for induction that you see in, say, the sports world. However, that doesn’t mean that the committee off 600 or so people who makes the decisions of who gets honored and who gets snubbed isn’t reading this blog post. So, with that in mind, vote for the act that you feel is most deserving of the honor in our poll below, and maybe, just maybe, Jann Wenner and his band of choosy cronies will pay heed!
