Hey, did you forget what day it is? Yeah, sure, it’s Earth Day, but it’s also VH1’s Earth, Wind & Fire Day! Some of you might be asking yourselves why VH1 is celebrating the legacy of Earth, Wind & Fire today. To put it quite simply: Earth, Wind & Fire rules!
With over 40 years of making music under their belt, Earth, Wind & Fire has sold over 90 million albums worldwide and inspired the likes of Prince, Alicia Keys, and Jay Z. Now, the soul-funk-fusion act has come full circle with the release of a new album, Now, Then & Forever (in stores now). We spoke with original EWF member Philip Bailey about collaborating with other EWF original members Verdine White and Ralph Johnson to create their latest project, and got his take on the state of music today, how EWF continues to make music that is adored my millions around the world, and his love for Maroon 5, John Mayer, and Janelle Monae.
If it were your birthday, you had your own talk show, and you could pick any artist in the world to play for you, who would you chose? Superstar Ellen Degeneres chose Earth, Wind & Fire for her birthday, which she celebrated on The Ellen Degeneres Show. Ellen’s favorite band, Earth, Wind & Fire acted as house band throughout the entire show, and we especially loved this performance of “September.” Watching the energy and joy with which the band played the song on stage, it’s hard to imagine that they started making music in 1971 — they seem so fresh and new! The performance was fun, upbeat and infectious, and we recommend getting out of your chair and doing a little shuffle in front of your desk as a great way to start your work day.
