The 90s were ruled by girl groups. The queens of En Vogue, TLC, Destiny’s Child and the Spice Girls reigned supreme on the charts. But so far, the new millennium has seen a dearth of really kick ass girl groups on the U.S. charts. Now that One Direction has cracked open the market for boy bands, who are the lovely ladies waiting to sneak in, tear up the harmonies and serve some soul? Well, we’ve got five girl bands in particular that are winning us over with their own particular brands of pop. Forget all about “Spice World”…it’s their world now.

Check out the top five performances from yesterday, and be sure to watch it all in its entirety over at MTV.
1. With 5(!) Grammy nominations this year, Miguel blowing up. Here’s “The Thrill” from his album, Kaleidescope Dream.
We’ve already gone on record stating our unequivocal love for First Aid Kit‘s song “Emmylou,” a song that first came to our attention via The League star Katie Aselton, and a track that we described as evoking “a particularly warm sense of romance and nostalgia with its references to timeless American musical couples, along with the most exquisite harmonizing that we’ve heard in some time.” So when saw that sisters Johanna and Klara Soderberg (age 21 and 18, respectively) met up with our friends over at MTV Hive for a First Take session, we squealed with delight.
Above, we have a gorgeous acoustic rendition of “Emmylou” for you (interspersed with a revealing interview), but if you’d like to see more from First Aid Kit, be sure to head over to MTV Hive for their full First Take session.
Yesterday afternoon, The League star Katie Aselton (@duplaselton) tweeted that “the song ‘emmylou’ by first aid kit makes me all smushy and romantic. you know, in case u were wondering.” Being fans of Mrs. Aselton, we immediately sought out the song and, well, we owe her a debt of gratitude for calling our attention to this instant classic.
Somehow, we had missed the January release of First Aid Kit‘s new album, The Lion’s Roar. The Swedish folk duo made up of sisters Johanna and Klara Soderberg (age 21 and 18, respectively) have scored great reviews for their sophomore LP, including a 7.6 from the notoriously persnickety folks at Pitchfork. That album’s lead single, “Emmylou”, is a bittersweet, slide-guitar driven slice of Americana, one that envelops you upon your first listen and feels instantly familiar. The song’s refrain of “I’ll be your Emmylou/And I’ll be your June/And you’ll be my Gram/And my Johnny, too” evokes a particularly warm sense of romance and nostalgia with its references to timeless American musical couples, and also features the most exquisite harmonizing that we’ve heard in some time. And the video, which was shot during magic hour conditions in California’s famed Joshua Tree national park and is steeped with Native American mysticism, is quite perfect, too. Try this song on for size and let us know if it doesn’t make you feel like you just curled up on the couch underneath your favorite warm blanket.
