Florence Welch Flexes Her Funny Bone As Flow-Diggity Flow-Doubt On SNL

Florence + The Machine frontwoman Florence Welch flexed her funny bone on Saturday Night Live this weekend, performing in a sketch as Flow-Diggity Flow-Doubt in a satirical take on New Jack Swing. The sketch features parody characters like Sweaty Keith and Cross Cris, performing hilarious “turkey themed r’n’b rap fusion songs.” Florence shines in the first comedic role that we’ve ever seen her perform, showing her lighter side after taking a noticeably darker turn with Florence + The Machine’s new album, Ceremonials. Belting out a hilarious tune about the “adult table,” Flo croons about forgetting footsies and going straight for “full on sex.” Her deadpan expression is priceless and she stares down the camera with her best bedroom eyes, hand on hip and declares “it’s time to grow up.” The clip has not only got us giggling, but sort of hoping Flo will consider releasing an R & B album in the future … We can only dream!

Florence also appeared in another sketch as an enthusiastic dancing groupie for Jason Segel’s fictional band, The Blue Jean Committee (below), but the Florence Fest didn’t stop there. The performer took to the stage with The Machine for “No Light, No Light” and “Shake It Out.” A far cry from the irreverence with which she played Flow-Diggity, Florence was poised, graceful and elegant as she sang both songs. Not to mention divine, first while wearing Balmain, and second in a floor length black and lace cascading gown in signature Florence style. Keep an eye out for the impeccable Florence performing with The Machine for VH1′s DIVAS Celebrates Soul on Monday, December 19 at 9 p.m. ET/8 CT on VH1.

Florence And The Machine’s New Video For “No Light No Light” Is A Voodoo Nightmare

Florence + The Machine‘s cacophonous new album, Ceremonials, is anything but light, with huge, roaring vastness and a grandness reminiscent of epic movie soundtracks. The new video for “No Light No Light” matches the tone of the song to perfection, with a twisted fairytale storyline, otherworldly, dark magic at play and the dramatic attitudes of the flame-haired Florence Welch. Consuming and pervasive, the song has a certain open-endedness, as if it were constantly chasing an elusive rainbow, racing past blurs of cities and forests on a never-ending mission. This elemental sense of infiniteness is mimicked in the video, with Florence running away from an indefinable pursuer, which is where the song and the video differ — Florence’s reverent, soaring vocals suggest a race towards something, a propelling force, a search and hope, whereas the visual suggests tumult, chaos, evasion and escape from an ambiguous, phantasmal menace.

The video introduces us to three characters: Florence, the beleaguered angel, perhaps fallen from grace in her diaphanous black gown; the voodoo master, a contorting specter, haunting Florence’s every movement as a metaphor of a broken relationship; and the choir of pre-pubescent boys inside a cavernous, medieval church, offering Florence redemption. As the voodoo master torments Florence with pokes and prods, she looks out over the iconic New York skyline, before allowing herself to fall towards the street. Luckily Flo is saved by the boys’ choir, which not only catches her but holds her high above their heads in a Christ-like motif of resurrection. The intention of the video is glaring, and, like the song itself, there are no subtleties.

50 Cent Changes His Movie’s Name After Chinua Achebe Protests
50 Cent‘s new movie just got a namechange thanks to a critically lauded Nigerian novelist. Chinua Achebe, author of 1958′s English-language riposte to Joseph Conrad, Things Fall Apart, threatened legal action against 50 Cent, whose new film has the same name, and turned down a $1 million settlement offer. Considering that the idiom comes from a Yeats poem, the novelist’s case isn’t necessarily that strong, but “Got sued by Chinua Achebe” is probably not something 50 Cent wants on his resume, so the movie is now titled All Things Fall Apart. (Sidenote: Does this mean Achebe is a Roots fan?) [The Guardian]

Kelly Clarkson, Florence And The Machine Album Details Surface

Florence & The Machine also have an official tracklisting and album art for sophomore album Ceremonials, and second track “Shake It Out” has apparently leaked.

Helping You Make The Tough Decisions At Bonnaroo 2011

Festival season continues this weekend with Bonnaroo‘s 10th anniversary in Manchester, Tennessee, so we’re here again to help guide the 80,000 wristband holders through the tough choices of the weekend’s lineup. (Don’t have a ticket? You’re in luck! Some of the big-tent performances will be webcast at VEVO.) As always, we recommend checking out at least one band you haven?t heard before; might we recommend country-rocker Hayes Carll, (who plays one set each today and tomorrow)?

Jam-band and bluegrass aficionados have a plethora of options all weekend?perhaps too many tough choices. For the more pop-minded among us, here are five big intersection points to break down for you:

FRIDAY AFTERNOON
Choices: Grace Potter and the Nocturnals (3:15 p.m., What Stage) and Matt & Kim (3:15 p.m., This Tent)
Decision: Grace Potter and the Nocturnals. Both groups are embarking on summer tours in midsize venues with reasonable ticket prices, but Matt & Kim, though they showed at the OMAs that they can play bigger, do have a certain energy that’s amplified when it’s contained in a club full of kids that are ridiculously hyped up. You Oughta Know artists Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, on the other hand, don’t lose any of their power from midday open-air big-tent staging.
