Courtney Love Has “99 Problems” (But Doing Boring Covers Ain’t One)

There’s a whole subgenre* of music wherein sensitive, acoustic guitar-strumming artists try to flip the script by taking the edge off hardcore hip-hop songs (think Dynamite Hack‘s “Boyz In The Hood”, Ben Folds‘ “Bitches Ain’t S***”) by adding an element of ironic humor to their interpretations. Well, no one has ever accused Courtney Love of being anything remotely approaching sensitive, which is why we have zero issues with the acoustic cover of Jay-Z‘s “99 Problems” that she performed at a Sundance Film Festival afterparty over the weekend.

Hova’s original, Rick Rubin-produced version of “99 Problems” is alternately defiant and hilarious, but Courtney Love ups the emotional stakes significantly by stripping any trace of humor from the song. She infuses lines like “But ain’t nothing sweet ’bout how I hold my gun” with a layer of emotional instability that turns the song from a riotous party anthem into something significantly more haunting and, along the way, reminds us how much the music world misses the enigmatic star.

*A genre which, frankly, we grew tired of as soon as it sprouted up.

Justin Timberlake’s “Suit & Tie Featuring JAY Z” Lyric Video: Watch It Here!

After a quick, 30-second tease that was tearing up our heart, we’re pleased to give you the real thing. Justin Timberlake‘s official lyric video for “Suit & Tie Featuring JAY Z” dropped this morning, while you were happily living out your own superstar fantasies in dream land. Handsome JT continues to look handsome in the full clip, be in whether he’s slowly driving along the sunny streets of Los Angeles en route to his day job or posing for multiple flashing lights. It’s a way to see how the sausage gets made–the sausage being a talented multi-Grammy winner who needs little help prepping for a photo shoot and shares our passion for playing the air trumpet. There are plenty of fancy, titular objects to ogle as Timberlake goes through the process of getting dressed, the camera slowly scanning every inch of his dapper ensemble, pausing on his wedding ring–hi, Jessica–for better or for worse.

Justin Timberlake’s “Suit & Tie Featuring JAY Z” Lyric Video: Watch An Exclusive Preview Here!

Justin Timberlake‘s grand return to music has not been without some teasing. He wanted to make sure he was ready, and that we were waiting patiently, willing to give him our full attention. As if there was any other choice!  Timberlake’s “Suit & Tie Featuring JAY Z” has already done monster sales since premiering online on January 13. And in preparation for what appears to be a full-blown return to making music–yay!–via one hotly anticipated album, The 20/20 Experience, Tuner has a first look at the official lyric video for his new single.

But it’s not your standard clip. Defying expectations that this should just be a bunch of words flashing across the screen, Timberlake himself cruises down Hollywood Boulevard spanning the busy streets of Los Angeles and the hallowed Hills Lauren and Heidi know all too well, to go about his business. Since he’s been gone for much more than a minute, it’s generous of Justin to show us what he’s been up to lately–and, the least he can do after our wedding invitation got lost in the mail.

What’s Up With Lil’ Kim Shooting A Video Titled “Jay-Z” With Mob Affiliated Tony Testa And Mob Wives’ Carla Facciolo?

Lil’ Kim just refuses to appease her day-one fans with banging new cuts from a classic new album. We’re still waiting on you, Kim. When she’s not breaking up to makeup with her boyfriend on Twitter she’s making a video named “Jay-Z” complete with real-life mob affiliations. “Jay-Z” as a title though? Jay‘s people will be expecting a check from using the likeness of his name.

Kim has been using mob references in her music for years and in recent days has been hanging with Mob Wives’ Drita DaVanzo. It’s not surprising Tony Testa, whose uncle Joseph Carmine Testa was convicted of being the head of the Gambino crime family, along with Mob Wives’ Carla Facciolo were spotted on the set. Read more…

Lil Wayne’s “Staring At The World” Further Proves He Has Fallen Off

I take no joy in saying Lil Wayne fell off.

Proud southerner here. For that reason I’ve listened to Lil Wayne’s music since he debuted with Hot BoysGet It How U Live in 1996. Over the years I’ve closely followed Wayne’s career and progression from 1999′s The Block Is Hot to 2004′s Tha Carter to 2011′s Tha Carter IV, and all the albums and mixtapes in between; and like slews of southern hip-hop heads, we’ve been fans since he was a 15-year-old kid.

Today I listened to “Staring At The World” from his forthcoming I Am Not A Human Being 2 barely able to stomach the auto-tuned screeching chorus or the struggle lyrics. What has happened with Weezy? Trust I’m not one of the music fans who loathes when an artist with a 20 year career evolves. Change is good; it can be great. But whatever change Weezy’s made in the last four years isn’t one that has advanced his style. His verses, songs and albums are getting progressively worse. Read more…

“Suit And Tie” Not Only Looks Good On Justin Timberlake, But Is Predicted To Chart On Billboard’s Hot 100

The proverbial streets still have love for JT. There’s so much agape for Justin Timberlake‘s new single “Suit & Tie” that Billboard predicts the single may sell as many as 400,000 downloads by the end of the tracking week on Sunday, January 20. Considering the song set the Internet ablaze only a little over 48 hours ago, it’s clear JT’s resurgence after a six year hiatus from music was absolutely long overdue. Read more…

Justin Timberlake Makes 2013 Better With The Release Of “Suit and Tie” And Plans For A New Album

Justin Timberlake Releases "Suit and Tie"

After tricking us with a Twitter stunt last week, Justin Timberlake dropped his latest musical offering just before midnight on Monday, catching the lingering Golden Globes crowd on Twitter just in time to launch an onslaught of mixed reactions about his decision to make music his priority once again. Like Destiny’s Child‘s latest song “Nuclear”, Timberlake’s new song “Suit and Tie” didn’t instantly grab us and transport us to a world of magical Timbaland beats and inventive blends of pop, R&B and soul, but it is a welcomed return filled with slick grooves and familiar musings on style, sex and having a good time.

Justin Timberlake Releasing New Music Reportedly Featuring Jay-Z And Beyonce

Justin Timberlake Making New Music With Jay-Z

Exciting news! Those prayer circles you’ve held and the many vision boards you’ve been working on for the past seven years have finally paid off: Justin Timberlake is releasing music! Of his own! Without any ties to MySpace! (We hope.) Pause for reflection, brief celebration and be sure to clear your schedule for the next three hours of so. The new song is dropping at 12:01 p.m. EST today and you’ll clearly need a few minutes to dry your happy tears and think about what this all means.

For those who need a refresher, this is the first solo material from Timberlake since his 2006 sophomore album, FutureSex/LoveSounds, released back in a time when iPhones had yet to be invented and our minds hadn’t been cluttered by the terms “Kardashian” or “YOLO.” We’ve been teased before, but this time it sounds legit: the infrequent Twitter user posted an ominous update on Wednesday night (“Thursday, January 10th, 2013 at 9:01 am PST… “) stirring speculation that something big was on its way in just a few hours.

Her name created enough buzz in 2012 for Rita Ora to make our Music’s Biggest Breakout Stars of 2012 list. But according to Jay-Z‘s British protege, 2013 is going to be her year. When Hip-Hop And Classic Literature Meet: Jay-Z Confirmed To Score Baz Luhrmann’s Adaptation Of The Great Gatsby

When it comes to creating a soundtrack to a classic such as The Great Gasby one must call on an artist with a level of musical genius. Director Baz Luhrmann already featured Watch The Throne’s “No Church in the Wild” and listened to Jay-Z on-set as motivation. The next step then doesn’t seem as much of a shock. Rumors sparked that Lady Gaga and Prince would contribute to the project’s soundtrack, but no other information had been confirmed. That was until a tweet from producer Jeymes Samuel of The Bullitts.
