Jennifer Hudson‘s new album JHUD is out today! And in celebration of her newest release, we thought we’d take a look back at her transformation from budding singer on American Idol to glamorous Oscar winner and sleek R&B diva. We all fell in love with Jennifer during her time on Idol, when her style was all cute girly dresses. And while she didn’t break the Top Five during her season, she ended up scooping up a Best Supporting Actress Oscar just a few years later, wearing a gorgeous gold gown to match her new status in life.

The long-awaited James Brown biopic Get On Up explores the late Godfather of Soul’s legacy that continues to influence hip-hop, R&B, funk, and nearly every other musical genre to this day. The great JB changed the game over the course of his half-century career, and artists still strive to emulate his passionate live performances, howling vocals, and impossibly high levels of swagger. It’s a lot of pressure for an artist to deliver pitch perfect vocal performances for big budget live broadcasts. There’s a lot that can go wrong, so it makes sense that they’d want to hedge their bets with a pre-recorded version…just to be on the safe side. Unfortunately, sometimes this purely practical decision comes back to haunt them in a big way! Occasionally it becomes an amusing footnote to their career (sorry, Ashlee Simpson), while other times it completely destroys it. Read on for 10 of the biggest upsets caused by lip syncing!

After a breakout year, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis brought the house down with a stirring performance of “Same Love” that included surprise guest, Jennifer Hudson. The hip-hop duo, winner of the “Best Video with a Social Message,” performed their pro-gay marriage song that turned out to be an unexpected hit of the summer.
