Is Rihanna worthy of the gold throne she’s seated in, in the above photo? Billboard thinks so as they’ve chosen her as the top pop artist of the last 20 years. With only seven years under her belt Rihanna beat out veterans Janet Jackson, Mariah Carey, Jennifer Lopez, Usher and Celine Dion. As far as her peers she toppled her bestie Katy Perry, Beyonce, Lady Gaga and Chris Brown. Part of Riri’s success can be attributed to her ability to dish out catchy hit after hit. Her hooks hook you. No pun intended. The chorus and hooks immediately come to mind when you hear just the titles of “We Found Love,” “Where Have You Been,” “Umbrella,” “Birthday Cake” and countless others. Is Rihanna’s formula for mastering an infectious song why she leaves her counterparts slouching in the dust? Read more…
Well, well, well. Singers are making big moves–and by big we mean topping Forbes annual Hollywood’s Highest-Paid Women list. Endorsement deals and other ventures outside of music are paying off in a major way. Unsurprisingly Oprah topped the list pulling in $165 million last year. Pop (and country) divas Britney Spears, Taylor Swift and Rihanna trailed behind Oprah in the second, third and fourth highest paid spots respectively. Talk about Britney Spears making a comeback pulling in $58 million! The new X-Factor judge didn’t make the list last year, but has since bounced back with numerous endorsement deals and a fragrance line. Read more…
As kids we almost believed Jennifer Lopez was actually Selena Quintanilla-Perez because she played the slain Tejano singer so well in the 1997 film Selena. To pay tribute to the late singer, J.Lo covered Selena’s “No Me Queda Mas” during her Dallas tour stop. In her flowing red dress J.Lo crooned the words, “no me queda mas” to screaming fans who all sung along. A seemingly emotion J.Lo pushed her vocals to a high range to thunderous applauds from the crowd. We can’t believe its been 15 years since the debut of the film. And J.Lo’s still rocking out packed shows not looking a day over 25. Read more…
Jennifer Lopez and Flo Rida go in on the fluorescent revolution in the new video for “Goin’ In,” their track off the Step Up Revolution soundtrack. The video features a Jenny looking much like she did on the block in an white Yankees cap and crop tops galore, except upgraded by extra-all-neon-everything and lips bedazzled with pink jewels because her new block’s fire hydrants spray colorful paint. Joined by a shirtless and extra-beefy — those workouts are paying off! — Flo Rida, and armed with dayglo goo filled grenades and those mighty curves, she heads up a Step Up inspired dance battle. There’s white wolves and lots of lasers and a Lopez all the more fierce for her 43 years — the whole thing just really goes in. The revolution, it will be glowing!
Word has it that American Idol is looking to recast the judges panel with one of their greatest successes past: Adam Lambert! According to an E! News report, Fox network executives are courting the season eight contestant with hopes that he will fill the not likely to return Jennifer Lopez‘s seat. From the sounds of it, the talent seeking show is looking to reboot for its 12th season, and bringing back a glittery old flame like Lambert to judge should help to do just that. As an alum — and a particularly successful one at that — he is well situated to guide and inspire contestants. And he’s already proven a hit amongst Idol watchers, so he could be just the hit of change the show needs ahead of its teenage years.
Jennifer Lopez has come a long way from the self-proclaimed Jenny on the block, or Fly Girl from “In Living Color.” She teams up with reggaeton duo Wisin & Yandel in the action packed video for “Follow the Leader” directed by her 25-year-old boyfriend Casper Smart. And every last one of them turn the heat all the way up! The 42-year-old mother of twins still got “it,” evident by her incredible athleticism as she runs through Acapulco, Mexico. Her acting chops are nothing to snuff at either. From hopping over a pickup truck, jumping through a window feet first, swinging from stairwell bars and jumping from roof to roof eventually escaping the guys chasing her, J. Lo knows how to make even the action shots look hot.
J. Lo oozes sexy without much effort. She enticingly sings, “I’ll make you lose your cabezo.” Not to mention she’s topless with fake tattoos around her neck and mid-back. Both Wisin & Yandel elevate the flavor with their beautiful Spanish verses. The reggae, dance pop song explodes on the screen because of its up tempo sound and high energy video. The video is only a glimpse of what’s to come from these three because this summer J.Lo co-headlines a summer tour beginning July 14 with Enrique Inglesias, and Wisin and Yandel are the openers. How’s that for some summer heat!
Who doesn’t love flashbacks, particularly to hip hop’s golden era of the late 80s and early 90s? Television and music in that era were so badass, and the fashion? Well, that had it’s ups and down. However, there’s no arguing that this era was when hip hop expanded from a genre to a global culture, and throughout it all, Yo! MTV Raps was at the forefront of the movement documenting classic moments of hip hop culture.
On Wednesday night, VH1 will be airing a 2-hour special, The 40 Greatest Yo! MTV Raps Moments, beginning at 7 p.m. ET/PT. To whet your appetite, we pulled a bunch of classic stills from the legendary program —everything from badboy Bobby Brown to a (non-holographic) Tupac going off on the Hughes Brothers to Mary J. Blige pre-”No More Drama.”
With American Idol and The Voice running concurrently, we’re finding it increasingly difficult to find enough hours in the week to watch both programs. However, when we heard that Nicki Minaj was going to be performing* on American Idol last night, we made sure to flip the dial to catch her first live TV appearance since the controversial “Exorcism Of Roman” number on the Grammys.
Well, nobody got exorcised last night, but it did appear to us like Idol judge J. Lo was throwing some shade in Minaj’s general direction after Nicki suggested that she’d like to join the judging panel. [pic via Mr. Worldwide]
Do we have a brewing beef on our hands?
Elsewhere in late night…
In our 100 Greatest Women in Music series that aired on VH1 last week, we declared Madonna as the greatest female artist of the last 20 years. Now we’ve decided to let the fans have their say — yep, it’s your turn to tell us who YOU think is the Greatest Woman In Pop. The first round sees Lady Gaga pitted against Madonna, Britney Spears vs. Rihanna, Katy Perry fighting Mariah Carey, and Jennifer Lopez weighing in against Beyoncé.
So far, Madonna is ahead of Gaga, 53% to 47%, but it’s a damn tight margin! We’re biting our nails to see if Mother Monster comes out on top of the Queen Of Pop. Also going head to head are Katy Perry and Mariah, with a mere 3% separating them and Katy ahead by just a pinch! On the other side of the scale, Britney is absolutely crushing Rihanna with 67% of votes to RiRi’s 33%. And in the battle between J-Lo and Beyoncé, Mamma Bey looks like she’s going to take out the round with a huge 68% of votes compared to Jenny’s 32%. If you’re not happy with the results so far don’t worry — it’s not over yet! You still have time to get your vote in for the first round, so be sure to click on your favorite pop lady before 11:59 p.m. EST tonight!
On Friday night, we aired the last installment of our five-part, 100 Greatest Women in Music series. If you happened to miss the countdown, it’s spoiler alert time: VH1 crowned Madonna as the greatest female artist of the last 20 years.
While it’s tough to argue with the musical legacy of Madonna, we received an incredible number of comments, emails, and tweets from our VH1 audience asking about their ability to participate in this countdown. Well, we listened and worked to put together the following bracket-style tournament of The 8 Greatest Women In Pop where you, the reader, will be able to select the most accomplished female artist in the pop music game right now. (Sorry, Adele fans: We figured that since she just swept the Grammys, she has enough awards for the moment, so we left her out of this tournament).
Our tournament will run today through next Monday, February 27, and our first round matchups are pretty outrageous: Lady Gaga vs. Madonna, Britney Spears vs. Rihanna, Katy Perry vs. Mariah Carey, and Jennifer Lopez vs. Beyoncé. One tiny administrative note: Be sure and get your first-round vote in by 11:59 p.m. EST on Wednesday, 2/22.
