Johnny Winter, Acclaimed Blues Rock Guitarist, Dead At 70

Acclaimed guitarist and blues rock pioneer Johnny Winter died yesterday at the age of 70. Like his heroes, he was a touring bluesman to the end and was found dead in his hotel room in Zurich, Switzerland after having played a festival in nearby Austria. Years before Stevie Ray Vaughan or Billy Gibbons came to fame, Johnny Winter was the archetype of the hotshot Texas blues guitarist that could play fast but tasty with an earnest reverence for the genre’s original masters. American Idol judges Steven Tyler and Randy Jackson teamed up with Joe Perry on The Tonight Show With Jay Leno to give a super fun performance of Aerosmith‘s “Chip Away The Stone.” With a full band, the veterans we’re lively and animated, for what was a joy filled performance. The guys had great chemistry together on stage, and proved that age ain’t nothing but a number when it comes to rocking out.

The adorable Kina Grannis, VH1′s January Posted artist, performed a beautiful, acoustic version of “In Your Arms” for Jimmy Kimmel Live last night. It’s no secret that we love Kina, and it’s not hard to see why. The young performer is sincere, relatable and perfectly imperfect as she sings with true emotion. Promoting her album Stairwells, Kina took to the stage with the presence and easy charm of a veteran performer, despite her relative newness to the limelight. Her charming smile accompanying the heartfelt vocal made for a convincing performance that has stuck in our minds the same way as the passionate kind of love affair Kina sings about would.
