There’s more to South By Southwest than eating tacos. Though, ask anyone who’s been, and he or she will tell you that there’s certainly a lot of those, too. This year’s festival attendees were lucky enough to see Girls star Lena Dunham deliver the keynote address, which touched on the issue of sexism in show business. Dunham spoke firsthand, referencing Girls actor Adam Driver‘s rising star and how her female cast is not being offered similar opportunities.

First they did it with a dog, then with a near R-rated Where The Wild Things Are themed video around New York City, and now American Authors are performing a compact version of their Billboard Hot 100 hit “Best Day Of My Life” for VH1′s Stop/Watch. Is watching the boys shrink down the catchy tune to under a minute as adorable as watching a bulldog rock sunglasses and eat a cupcake? It’s damn near close!
Sure, creating a hit song is hard, but try shortening that hit into 60-seconds of earwormy genius and you’ve got VH1′s Stop/Watch which has artists like Sara Bareilles throwing down her Billboard 100 track “Brave” in under a minute. Just when you thought that song couldn’t be more addictive.
Our You Oughta Know alumna isn’t the only singer stepping up to our music challenge. Goo Goo Dolls reworked “Rebel Beat” while YOK alums JOHNNYSWIM and fan-picked Russell Taylor bravely served up abridged versions of “Don’t Let It Get You Down” and “War of Hearts,” respectively. Check out our video gallery to see if they all beat the clock.
Fresh off their set at VH1′s first You Oughta Know concert, JOHNNYSWIM takes their seductively acoustic sound to the beachside. Follow the duo as they search for inspiration while cruising around in a FIAT 500L.
VH1′s first ever You Oughta Know In Concert went down at the Roseland Ballroom on November 11, 2013, and aired on VH1 last night. It featured performances from a wide-range of You Oughta Know alumni which ran the gamut from brand new artists (Lorde, JOHNNYSWIM, HAIM) and veterans (The Lumineers, Matt Nathanson, Ed Sheeran, Emeli Sandé) alike.
No two You Oughta Know artists are more in love than Amanda Sudano-Ramirez and Abner Ramirez of JOHNNYSWIM. The duo’s passion could be seen on stage as they performed “Heart Beats” and their new single, “Diamonds.” Sudano’s raspy voice sounded haunting as she tore through “Heart Beats.” But even that couldn’t distract from the love the two had for each other while on stage. At one point, the two turned to each other and it was clear that this what they were brought together to do.
While VH1′s You Oughta Know In Concert is a chance to showcase the very best in hand-picked talent, it’s a known truth that everything is better with a little Britney. As in, it’s Britney, bitch. Amanda and Abner of Nashville-based duo JOHNNYSWIM took the stage at Roseland Ballroom to tear through this year’s Heart Beats EP, but not before paying tribute to the goddess of pop.
JOHNNYSWIM is one of the featured acts that will be performing live at the first ever You Oughta Know In Concert, which will be livestreaming exclusively on VH1.com on Monday, November 11, and then airing again in glorious HD on VH1 on Thursday, November 21. JOHNNYSWIM, a duo made up of the married couple Abner Ramirez and Amanda Sudano-Ramirez, joined our You Oughta Know family in July of this year thanks in large part to the arresting nature of their debut single, “Heart Beats” (which you can catch an abbreviated version of above).
Who is JOHNNYSWIM? Well, for starters, they recently joined the You Oughta Know family. We also know that this duo is made up of Abner Ramirez and Amanda Sudano Ramirez, and that they’re drawing warm comparisons to the likes of the multiple Grammy winning duo The Civil Wars. But where, pray tell, does a name like Johnnyswim come from? Does it come from a goldfish? A particularly scary moment from the film Jaws? Or is it something else entirely? The video above may—or may not!—contain some of the answers you’re looking for…
