With the hype around Tim Tebow, quarterback for the Denver Broncos and Most Popular Athlete In America, hitting fever pitch, it seems like the music world has become rather enamoured by the football star too. While rumours are circulating that Katy Perry’s parents are gunning for their pop star daughter to date the football wunderkind, the music tributes are rolling in thick and fast. Jimmy Fallon paid tribute to quarterback with a hilarious parody that mashed together David Bowie and Tebow for the character “Tebowie,” half Ziggy Stardust, half man on the field, but with a guitar instead of a ball. John Parr also took this opportunity in 20-Tebow to honour him with a remake of St. Elmo’s Fire entitled, “Tim Tebow’s Fire.” Given the reverence with which Tebow is being received, we think he should have kept the “St.” part of the title. Just sayin’. You can hear both songs after the jump.
Katy Perry To Perform For The First Time Post-Break Up During Super Bowl Week
It’s been a rough start to the New Year for Katy Perry despite a trailblazing effort in 2011 that saw her score five number one hit songs from the same album, Teenage Dream. Having recently split from hubby Russell Brand, Katy cancelled what should have been her first appearance for 2012 at the People’s Choice Awards earlier this week (where, despite her absence, she cleaned up, winning a massive five out of seven awards she was nominated for). But we had the girl pegged as the “Never say die” sort from the start, and it seems our instincts about Katy weren’t far off the mark. Katy will be getting back on the horse for Super Bowl week and performing at a private show for DirecTV’s Super Saturday Night at Indianapolis’ Victory Field on Feburary 4. We’re rooting for Katy from the sidelines, and looking forward to seeing her back on the stage where she belongs!

6 Reasons You Must Know Gotye Right This Instant
Wally De Backer, better known by his stage name, Gotye, is already set up to be one of 2012′s biggest names. His 2011 album Making Mirrors found critical success in his home country of Australia, and the artist is preparing to spread his wings to hit America like Adele. With his intoxicatingly soothing voice, sudden hooks and high notes that shove you out of the comfortable reverie his verses induce, Goyte’s music is both thrilling and challenging, speaking to shared experiences with its honest lyricism.
1. “Somebody That I Used To Know”
“Somebody That I Used To Know” was a runway hit in Australia and its ripples have reached American shores with noticeable force. Dueting with another Australian up-and-coming superstar, Kimbra, Gotye taps into the messiness a breaking up — and the unexpectedly painful mundanities, like the simple act of returning each others belongings, that go with it. The sentiment of the song and Gotye’s cutting hook, coupled with the beautiful video and trickling graphics that match the melody, will have you stuck to your screen hitting repeat.
2. Creative Covers Of “Somebody That I Used To Know”
Walk Off The Earth covered “Somebody That I Used To Know” using five people and one guitar and if possible, it’s just as compelling as the original. We love that Gotye’s music inspires such creative responses from such talented musicians, as opposed to the stock standard same-same style cover. The Roots affiliated STS also got creative with the song, using the melody and chorus to tell his own story (which at times is very humorous) of a break up (after the jump).

Listen To Katy Perry’s Country Turn In A Leaked Demo For “Bullet”
If you’ve ever wondered what Katy Perry would sound like doing country, then here you go; a demo has leaked of Katy Perry singing a song called “Bullet” she co-wrote for country star Jesse James‘ debut album in 2009. We hope Katy sticks to her pop roots, but we’re sort of loving this little lick of country. [Neon Limelight]
Rihanna Is Called Out For “Ripping Off” Photographer
The latest in A Big Celebrity Copied Me, Rihanna is being accused by blogger Bryan Derballa of “ripping off” the work of photographer Sandy Kim in her video for “We Found Love.” We see some similarities, but we’d only go as far to say “inspired by” and even then it’s tenuous, with so much recent “hipster” photography tending towards the aesthetic that “We Found Love” is going for. The Top 10 Music Stories Of 2011: From Baby Bey-Z To Lana Del Rey

1. Beyoncé’s Pregnancy
Forget actual music — who cares about music when the Queen Of Everything is pregnant? And now the world waits with baited breath for the chosen one to emerge from the most revered womb on earth.
What Your New Year’s Eve Party Theme Song Says About Your Party Style
It’s almost New Year’s Eve, that one, glorious, most hopeful night of the year. It’s also that one night you’re going to party like it’s 1999, so let this week be dedicated to mani-pedis, haircuts, outfit buying, midnight kiss daydreaming, preemptive sleeping and playlist making. When it comes to partying, everyone has a distinctive song, an anthem, if you will — and we’re here to tell you what your New Year’s Eve theme song, that banger you’re going to be cranking at midnight, says about your party style, and what kind of New Year’s Eve you can expect…
Britney Spears – “Til The World Ends”
You’re either a strong believer in Mayan mythology or you just really, really love dancing. Chances are you’re going to be on the dance floor all night — forget about everything else, you just want to dance (until the world ends, heh). We’re going to take a punt and guess that you were going through puberty the first time you heard “… Baby One More Time,” and that Britney just so, like, makes you feel like a teenager again! If you’re anything like us (a Britney stalwart since the start), you’re just completely ecstatic to see Britney get her groove back.

She was just standing up for her man, y’all! When a peturbed fan called Miley Cyrus‘ boyfriend an “a-hole” in Costa Rica, the bong-toting, out of control teen idol (seriously, there should be a font for sarcasm) said the F-word. GASP! [Perez Hilton]

Katy Perry Talks Evangelism, Jimi Hendrix And Drug Dealing On Barbara Walters’ 10 Most Fascinating People
If you weren’t already in love with Katy Perry, then you should definitely watch her interview on Barbara Walters’ 10 Most Fascinating People. Katy is honest and endearing, revealing just enough but still playing her cards close to her chest, giving a sense of total control, poise and grace. Katy is articulate and warm, and gosh darn it, we just want to be friends with the girl! Of the past year, Katy says it’s “been very intense. Just kind of holding onto the rocket for dear life, hoping I don’t get bucked off.” Katy also talks about her evangelical upbringing, her parents’ past life as hippies (during which time her mother dated Jimi Hendrix and her father was a drug dealer) and her decision to follow her dreams. She also talks about her marriage to Russell Brand and her desire to have children, cutely adding that at the moment, there’s nothing in her belly but Taco Bell.

Songtrust Announces The Top 20 Songwriters Of 2011
Are you sick of “top” and “best of” lists for 2011 yet? Surprisingly enough, we’re not — even though they are getting a bit repetitive in the Adele/Iver global back pat that’s happening right now. With all the glory being attributed to musicians for songs and albums, Songtrust have come right out of left field to say, “Yeah, kudos guys, but let’s have a round of applause for the people who are actually writing these songs.”
Some of our favorite hit machines — including You Oughta Know artists Adele and Bruno Mars, as well as Katy Perry — are seasoned song writers in their own right, but what about the guys and gals behind the music that aren’t also household names? Using data from Billboard Radio Songs and Digital Songs charts, Songtrust have compiled a list of 2011′s most seminal writers — yep, that’s right, these are the people responsible for all those songs you’re putting on your favorites lists. So three cheers for the writers! Songtrust’s Top 20 Songwriters Of 2011 after the jump.
