Divas take on divas in this supercut from our old VH1 cohort Rich Juzwiak in which the first ladies of pop music wax lyrical on their contemporaries. From the heartfelt, gushing rants of love and affection by Lady Gaga and Britney Spears over Madonna, to the ambiguous relationship between Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey, to the decidedly more acerbic back-and-forths between Madonna, Janet Jackson, Whitney and Cher, the video spans the gambit of famous diva on diva mouth-offs. As is mentioned several times in the super cut, it’s a shame that female performers are often cast in such a catty light, and often poked and prodded by prying reporters. As Christina Aguilera so sagely points out, “it just sucks that as women we have to deal with that comparison thing that men don’t necessarily have to.” Amen sister. Now can we all just kiss and make up? We’re looking at you Celine!
If you’d like to see divas being friends and doing what they do best — belting out their awesome hits — tune in for VH1′s DIVAS Celebrates Soul premiering Monday, December 19 at 9 p.m. ET/8 CT on VH1.
Lady Gaga’s Old Apartment In New York’s Lower East Side Is For Rent
Something tells us this one won’t be on the market for long, and that there will be a few Lady Gaga fans clamoring to move house even though the rent is advertised at $1,850 a month. [Spin]
Katy Perry Has Announced She Will Be Taking A Year Long Break From Music
It looks like a Baby Perry is on the cards as Katy Perry, despite blitzing the charts this year, will be taking a year off music to start a family with hubby Russell Brand. [NME]
On a recently taped episode of The Ellen Degeneres Show, Rihanna got personal about her love life, revealing that she’s not dating anyone right now (Ed. Note — DM me, BB!). RiRi then went on to draft a personals ad for Ellen, revealing what she’s looking for, “I like men that are more aggressive but mysterious but I like a man to be very sure. I like them to be sure of themselves and know that you’re the man. I’m the lady and the only way for us to make this work is for us to play our roles. You know, I can’t really be the man for you. I don’t want to have to be. I’m the man at work all the time.” Rihanna’s perfect man criteria got us to thinking, and we took the liberty of creating some personals ads for some of our favorite single stars who are so awesome they definitely shouldn’t be single.
I’m looking for someone to love me for me, because I will love you for you, and that includes all your freaky business. Sure, I’m a monster (this will bode well for you in ‘special’ moments *wink*) but so are you. At least you should be. I only date other monsters. You must be tolerant of my many hats, wigs and vertiginous shoes. If you’re so inclined, you’d be free to share these things and borrow them for your own personal use. You should be creative and boundary pushing and passionate. Our relationship will be an art work, and we will perpetuate high-culture through our love.

NME Imagines What Pop Stars Would Look Like If They Joined In For “Movember”

Lady Gaga reclines on a couch in a spangled dress and lavish hat, reading the foreword for her forthcoming collaborative photo book, which she worked on with the king of creep, photographer Terry Richardson. Dedicating the book to her “little monsters,” Gaga is every bit the Mother Monster we expect her to be, and the foreword is both eloquent and inspiring in the left of center way that Gaga has become renowned for. And while we’ve always been a bit wary of the controversial Richardson, hearing Gaga speaking of him so whimsically and reverently has piqued our interest in the joint project.
Gaga reads, “I’m convinced that we much push the boundaries of culture through love and acceptance. There is not moment to strange, no angle unflattering, no circumstance relying on blind artifice and never a time that I feel embarrassed or unsafe. Awakened into me is a perverse liberation, inspiring me to feel that it is OK to view yourself as hyper-human. This is how Terry views me. I am so real, he says, that I am unreal.” The book itself is said to be revealing, with the no-holds-barred visuals that Richardson and Gaga have built their names on.

Billboard.biz has confirmed that Lady Gaga will no longer be working with her long time collaborator, creative director Laurieann Gibson. Gaga has been working with Gibson since she was signed to Interscope in 2007, and the creative director has been central in building the unique, sometimes controversial Gaga-aesthetic that has become so iconic in pop culture. With reports abounding that the two decided to split creatively after a “bitter fight,” we’re wondering how the divide will affect Gaga’s brand; although we do expect that Mother Monster won’t even skip a beat, being that her persona essentially has a life of its own.
The animosity between Lady Gaga and Gibson apparently stems from several comments made to the media by Gibson crediting Madonna as Gaga’s style inspiration. With Gaga working so hard to throw off these comparisons, Gibson’s comments created much tension, which was reportedly compounded by creative clashes over the “Judas” video, in which Gibson became upset with the Mother Monster over the use of religious iconography. Additionally, “The Edge Of Glory” also became the subject of creative clashes featuring Gibon’s conservative visions, hence the low-fi, seemingly very un-Gaga production. Now that we have this information, we’re hoping that the break-up will be beneficial for Gaga, and that the superstar performer will get back on her A game when it comes to music videos. We love Gaga and we prefer it when the pop-star is turning heads, so a return to her directional, experimental beginnings would be just grand — in short, we want our Gaga nice and weird!
Last night, we reported on the Tweet that had Lady Gaga fans in a tizz, as Mother Monster promised a “Twitter surprise” for her followers. And the Lady did not disappoint, tweeting a picture of herself on a stretcher flanked by two nurses in what seems to be some kind of fantasy mental institution (above). The picture was simply captioned “It’s Not that I’ve been Dishonest, It’s Just that I Loathe Reality.”
According to internet chatter, the image is the first still from Gaga’s eagerly anticipated “Marry The Night” video, which she’s boasted will be her longest video yet. From the look of the still, we’re guessing it may just be a little bit surreal, chanelling the uncanny and the absurd in celebration of ambiguous Gagaism. And we’re hoping the crazy, out-of-this-world costumes LG’s been wearing to promote the single in live performances, like at the MTV EMA’s where she sang atop a synthetic moon, will make a reappearance in the forthcoming video.
With the Mother Monster refusing to provide closure, the carrot is dangling and the throngs of fans hopping around below are all anxious for a bite. What could this mystery reveal entail? Will it be more images of A Very Gaga Thanksgiving, the exotic pop-star’s first (and eagerly anticipated) Thanksgiving special? Or will it be the official video for “Marry The Night” to follow her epic performance of the track at MTV’s EMAs? Or have we missed the mark entirely, and will it be something completely unexpected? We know Lady Gaga can be a bit of a mixed bag — which only adds to our anticipation when we know the girl has something special on the boil!
Perhaps more impressive, though, are Beyoncé’s five nominations, especially her nod from the monoculture for 4 in the Favorite Album Of The Year category. 4 has been one of the more maligned records of the year, thanks to the fact that it has yet to produce a hit single on par with “Crazy In Love” (off Dangerously In Love), “Irreplaceable” (B’Day) or “Single Ladies” (I Am Sasha Fierce), not to mention the torrent of juicy scuttlebutt regarding Sony’s alleged disappointment in the album before consumers even had a chance to hear the full thing. Still, this morning’s nominations signal that the public-at-large appears to be unfazed by the industry chatter People’s Choice Awards nominations may not be as prestigious as those bestowed by the Grammys, but we’re guessing that Beyoncé’s camp is celebrating a minor victory this morning.
The People’s Choice Awards will air on CBS on January 12, 2012, and we’ve got the complete list of all of the music-related nominations for you below:
