View Photo Gallery

When it comes to Lady Gaga‘s style, she seems like a true original. Hooded leotards, Kermit dresses, the meat frock thing — she was born that way. Right? No. One of Gaga’s most important inspirations might surprise you: Sir Marilyn Manson. The shock rocker’s debut album Portrait of an American Family turns 20 years old today, and it got us thinking about all of the artists it has influenced, from hardcore acts to Mother Monster herself.

Pretty Boys? Rock Stars in Truly Insane Makeup

View Photo Gallery

With schlock rock pioneers, Kiss, going on a forty-city tour this summer (a grueling schedule for aging Baby Boomers; hope they’re bringing Ben-Gay) — we realized that the band was celebrating a huge milestone in 2014. Forty years of wearing truly psychotic makeup. Sure, they weren’t the first to do it – - that title goes to that weasly-genius Alice Cooper — but the fact that they were four big, brawny New York dudes made up to look like clown demons was super-memorable. And they took it so seriously! Each member was painted in the style of a different character: Starchild (Paul Stanley), The Demon (Gene Simmons), Space Ace (Ace Frehley) and Catman (Peter Criss). Totally bonkers, but seventh grade boys adored their freaky looks. Next up? A slew of bands hit stages looking like ghouls crossed with drag queens.

Is She Really Going Out With Him? 20 Not-So-Hot Rock Stars With Outrageously Hot Girlfriends

Guys date outside their league all the time, and our girlfriend would totally agree (rimshot). Perhaps this is simply because women are, generally speaking, much more emotionally intelligent dudes, and less apt to base a romantic partnership around something as superficial as looks. Ladies are drawn to more important  qualities like inner beauty of the soul…but in some cases, being an internationally renowned rock star helps a bit, too!

Rock stars are invading the small screen! We aren’t sure what’s in the air, but lately some legendary musicians have been popping up on prime-time TV shows. 15 Unlikely Metal Covers You Wouldn’t Expect To Rock (But Totally Do)!

UnlikelyMetalCovers
Many a musician has cut their teeth on cover songs over the years, and heavy metal and hard rock bands are no exception. From the ubiquitous blues covers of first generation hard rockers like Led Zeppelin and Humble Pie to such thrash metallers as Metallica and Slayer picking the perfect punk tune to show off their underground cred. However, occasionally a song from a very unlikely source, outside of the rock spectrum, works its way into a band’s repertoire. Who would think that one of Judas Priest’s greatest heavy metal moments would be a cover of a song by ‘60s folkie Joan Baez or that Marilyn Manson’s breakthrough hit would be a cover of the ‘80s synth-pop classic “Sweet Dreams” originally by Eurythmics? Here are 15 unlikely covers by some of hard rock and metal’s best bands that you wouldn’t expect to rock but totally do.

View Photo Gallery

Ever since Screaming Jay Hawkins climbed out of a coffin to sing “I Put A Spell On You” rockers have been playing with horror imagery and singing about things that go bump in the night. Hell, most metal deals with life’s dark side, be it self-hatred, misanthropy, fear, war and bogeyman, literal or metaphoric. It only makes sense that some bands, starting with Alice Cooper in the late ‘60s and carried through the ‘70s by Kiss and up to the present day with Slipknot and Marilyn Manson, would make their appearance echo the darkness of their music. It being that scariest day of the year today, we felt it only natural to profile 10 of hard rock and heavy metal’s scariest looking bands that dress up like it’s Halloween every day of the year.
