Will Maroon 5’s Overexposed Debut At #1? Adam Levine And James Valentine Weigh Their Chances Vs. Bieber And Linkin Park

Earlier today, Billboard revealed that teen icon Justin Bieber sold 374,000 copies of his new album, Believe, which makes it this year’s fastest selling album and the best debut since Drake moved 631,000 copies of Take Care back in November. When you consider the size of the Belieber Nation, though, this number feels a little light, which opens the doorway for a new act to debut at #1 next week.

The top contenders for next week’s crown are Maroon 5 and Linkin Park, both groups that have well-established fanbases and current hit on the charts (“Payphone” and “Burn It Down”, respectively). Industry bible HITS Daily Double has Linkin Park pegged to edge out Maroon 5 after one-day sales, but there’s still a long way to go in this race. When we caught up with Adam Levine and James Valentine on Monday, we asked them if reaching that milestone was one of their goals. (Watch their response in the video above.)

Tuned In: Katy Perry Keeps Jimmy Kimmel “Wide Awake”

Katy Perry joined Jimmy Kimmel last night from Hollywood Boulevard, where she working double-duty, premiering her new movie Katy Perry: Part of Me and performing her “Wide Awake” and “Part of Me.” Dressed for the occasion in a film reel bustier and concession stand print hot pants, had the famous street shut down and a “California Girls“-era, cotton candy decked stage set. This was her night, and she sounded great. First, she took center stage for “Wide Awake,” a more serious song about her journey that she wrote for the movie. A troupe dancers dressed like candy canes joined her for “Part of Me,” the evening’s energetic closer. The whole thing was no small deal, but neither is Katy. She’s earned it. Read more…

Is Maroon 5’s New Song “Tickets” A Diss Track Aimed At Christina Aguilera? We Asked!

In the last year, we have seen an explosion of reality singing competitions on the television airwaves. American Idol has, of course, been the most popular show on American television since its premiere ten years ago in June of 2002, but in the last year and change, we’ve seen NBC (The Voice), ABC (Duets) and Fox (The X-Factor) all launch competitors to the veritable Idol institution, to the point where the market for these programs has become totally saturated. Most Americans would be hard pressed to name the most recent winners of any one of these programs, let alone all four, but there’s no denying that reality television has given an incredible career boost for Adam Levine and his bandmates in Maroon 5.

Today sees the release of Maroon 5’s fourth studio album, Overexposed. One of the tracks on the album, “Tickets,” has been generating some Internet buzz as conspiracy theorists have suggested that it’s a diss track directed at Levine’s co-star on The Voice, Christina Aguilera. Lines like “She’s got tickets to her own show/But nobody wants to go” and “You’re perfect on the outside, but nothing at the core” certainly could be interpreted as being very Aguilera-esque, so when we caught up with Adam Levine and guitarist James Valentine at New York City’s Crosby Street Hotel yesterday afternoon, we asked them point blank to shed some light on the story. (See our video above.)

Adam Levine Blows Up Cars (And Looks Real Fine Doing So) In Maroon 5’s New “Payphone” Video

We’re totally swooning over how fine Adam Levine looks in the “Payphone” video featuring Wiz Khalifa. (Admittedly, the repeat button was abused.) It’s all shoot ‘em up bang bang in this hot new vid, which is the lead single off Maroon 5’s upcoming Overexposed album. The story begins at the ending. A scraggly Levine attempts to reach a woman on the payphone. Although this happens first in the video, in the timeline of events this really occurs after he plays superman at the bank to save the woman he loves from robbers. He escapes a hail of gunfire only to find the police outside, and guess who they think is the culprit of the robber? Surprise (not really): Levine.

Shortly after Wiz valet parks his drop top Levine steals the car and take the cops on a high speed chase leaving his lucky woman behind. Hence the “I’m at a payphone, trying to call home” chorus. He eludes the cops and makes it to the desperately needed payphone. “Payphone” is without a doubt action packed — a gun fight, police chase and exploding cars all withing less than five minutes. Is Levine trying to tell us something regarding acting aspirations? We totally envisioned this as a movie. A predictable one, but a movie nonetheless.

What Your New Year’s Eve Party Theme Song Says About Your Party Style

It’s almost New Year’s Eve, that one, glorious, most hopeful night of the year. It’s also that one night you’re going to party like it’s 1999, so let this week be dedicated to mani-pedis, haircuts, outfit buying, midnight kiss daydreaming, preemptive sleeping and playlist making. When it comes to partying, everyone has a distinctive song, an anthem, if you will — and we’re here to tell you what your New Year’s Eve theme song, that banger you’re going to be cranking at midnight, says about your party style, and what kind of New Year’s Eve you can expect…

Britney Spears – “Til The World Ends”
You’re either a strong believer in Mayan mythology or you just really, really love dancing. Chances are you’re going to be on the dance floor all night — forget about everything else, you just want to dance (until the world ends, heh). We’re going to take a punt and guess that you were going through puberty the first time you heard “… Baby One More Time,” and that Britney just so, like, makes you feel like a teenager again! If you’re anything like us (a Britney stalwart since the start), you’re just completely ecstatic to see Britney get her groove back.

Shearer’s Spotlight: Top 10 Musicians Who Namechecked Their Music Idols In 2011

Drake and Marvin Gaye

Each week here on VH1 Tuner, our VH1 Top 20 Video Countdown host Jim Shearer (@jimshearer on Twitter) will be sharing his Shearer’s Spotlight with us. Be sure to tune into the Top 20 Countdown tomorrow morning when it airs on VH1 at 9 a.m. ET/PT.

Jim Shearer

Besides whistling, shouting-out famous musicians in song titles seems to be all the rage this year.

Here’s how they rank:

10.) “Marvin’s Room,” Drake
This dizzying, chilled-out tune seemingly has nothing to do with Marvin Gaye, except when you discover that the song was apparently recorded in a studio used by the late-great singer, aptly named “Marvin’s Room.”

9.) “Marvin & Chardonnay,” Big Sean (feat. Kanye West & Roscoe Dash)
Another ode to Marvin Gaye, this one, however, mentions him by name in the song’s lyrics.

8.) “The Lisa Lisa/Full Force Routine,” Beastie Boys
Not so much a song as it as an outro for the Beastie’s latest album, Hot Sauce Committee, Pt. 2. Regardless, both musical acts from the 1980’s (Full Force and Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam) are curiously shouted out.

7.) “I Need A Doctor,” Dr. Dre (feat. Eminem & Skylar Grey)
Don’t call Dr. Dre conceited for name-dropping himself in his own song title; he appears in less than a minute of the actual track.

Demi Lovato Kicks Off Her Tour And Covers Maroon 5 And Christina Aguilera’s “Moves Like Jagger”

Demi Lovato began her Unbroken tour last night in Detroit, and in a gossamer gown, sashaying back and forth across the stage before her screaming fans, she let it rip. While Demi didn’t necessarily have moves like Jagger—her performance lacked any sort of dancing other than the occasional sway—she did have the song, covering Maroon 5 and Christina’s Aguilera‘s upbeat number “Moves Like Jagger.” She may not have bought the moves, and the super sweet Disney princess certainly didn’t bring the sexy the way Adam Levine and Christina do, but she did belt it out with her strong, confident vocal, which in our books, totally rocks.

Nicki Minaj, Kanye West, Jay-Z And Maroon 5 Join The Victoria’s Secret Angels On Stage

Amidst the fanciful costumes and ostentatious fanfare of the annual Victoria’s Secret “fashion” show, some of our favorite artists got on stage to sing the angels down the runway. Nicki Minaj, in a characteristically brazen ensemble, gave the Angels a run for their money with her other-worldly costume, and was just as sexy as the girls stomping past her, even though she was—ahem, we hope you can appreciate the irony in this—dressed somewhat more demurely. Kanye West was joined by surprise Watch The Throne collaborator Jay-Z to perform their hits “Otis” and “Stronger.” Fashion-forward Kanye cheekily appeared to be wearing a bomber jacket from the yet-to-be-released Versace for H&M range. Maroon 5 also performed, with frontman Adam Levine getting all cute (or sickening, depending on how you feel about love and couples right now) on stage with his long-time model girlfriend Anne Vyalitsyna.
