Last week, we successfully bought you the VH1 staff’s favorite songs of 2011 without any bloodshed, and we’re happy to report that no one’s brain exploded while trying to narrow down the amazing albums of 2012 into a concise list. Again, what VH1 staffers enjoyed in 2012 was a rich and vibrant tapestry of genres, created both by newcomers and veterans.
As far as consensus is concerned, there were 23 LPs that appeared on multiple ballots, but only 6 that appeared on four or more lists: Miguel‘s Kaleidoscope Dream (7 ballots), Emeli Sandé‘s Our Version Of Events and Frank Ocean‘s channel ORANGE (6 ballots apiece), Kendrick Lamar‘s good kid, m.A.A.d. city (5 ballots), Taylor Swift‘s RED and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis‘ The Heist (each with 4 ballots).
Contrary to popular belief, the music most celebrated on the charts isn’t always the best. Okay, that was sarcasm. But even artists with hits on the charts have a slew of singles that fall by the wayside. Not every album is a Katy Perry string of #1s. Thus, here is a list of artists whose albums were certainly recognized, but had singles that didn’t quite get the attention they deserved.
Rye Rye’s delayed and delayed album Go! Pop! Bang! finally came out in May of this year–and is really fantastic. An upbeat, eletro-pop banger that not only samples the Vengaboys‘ “Boom, Boom, Boom, Boom”, but also elevates Rye Rye’s signature sound. Unfortunately, it didn’t do so well on the charts, only hitting #9 on Dance Songs.
All hail Whitney Houston! The world lost a huge talent last February when The Voice passed away unexpectedly in her hotel room in Los Angeles. While Whitney was reigned supreme as the queen of ballads, she just as much ruled dance songs. VH1 DIVAS honored the incomparable legend with a show-stopping performance by Jordin Sparks, Ledisi and Melanie Fiona. Their make-you-want-to-dance tribute had the audience on their feet clapping along. As one of the greatest vocalist to touch a microphone, Whitney is not an easy diva to cover, because if you can’t sing her notes right, why bother? Thankfully, Jordin, Ledisi and Melanie all have the chops to belt out the range of notes Whitney mastered. And they worked the stage while doing it. Read more…
I don’t know about you, but I’m ready to dance. And it looks like this years’ VH1 Divas theme isn’t just getting to me. All weekend long our performers have been showing us their go-to dance moves, so we put them in a GIF wall (the only appropriate place). Looks like Adam Lambert‘s head-snapping ways are contagious.
Keri Hilson did the hustle, Iggy Azalea did the Macarena, and Jordin Sparks twerks…well, in private, she says. For us she did the salsa while Ledisi did the cabbage patch, Natasha Bedingfield showed us a sexy hip wiggle and Melanie Fiona made up what she calls her “itchy dress dance.” Check them all out below and let’s see if any of these moves make it into the show at 9PM ET/8C.
It’s been a whirlwind 48 hours of glitter, disco balls, lasers, too many bags of Cheetos FLAMIN‘ HOT®, but D-Day is finally here! Forget New Year’s, the biggest dance party of the year is VH1 DIVAS tonight! And based on what we saw on day one of rehearsals, it’s going to make everyone crap fireworks when the night is over. Don’t believe me? Just check out the rehearsal footage, photos and interviews from one of the most anticipated acts of the night, the Whitney Houston tribute.
Los Angeles’ Shrine Auditorium can’t even handle the VH1 Divas “Dance Party” about to go down, and you don’t want to miss it. If you’re feeling like this is the kind of event you just have to see in person, we’ve got good news to share: Tickets for VH1 DIVAS 2012 just went on sale on Ticketmaster! We’ll keep dishing more Divas dirt as we get closer to December 16. Until then, get more details from the latest press release to hit our inbox.

At VH1, countless hours are spent determining what music best complements our shows. This past month was no different as VH1′s CMI team worked to synch the best tracks to shows like Mob Wives Chicago and Single Ladies 2, tunes that added an extra spark to the drama onscreen. We thought it would be neat to give you an inside look into this world of music supervision.
To this end, we’ve put together a list of all the songs featured on our network in June — from artists like Timomatic, Emeli Sande, and up-and-comer Elle King. Additionally, we’ve included commentary from CMI team members as to why they selected songs for particular scenes as well as a Spotify playlist for you to sample. Enjoy, and look out for our July playlist!
Yes, the royal couple of hip-hop and R&B were at last night’s BET Awards, front and center. Beyonce and Jay-Z were the second and third most nominated artists (respectively) of the night, only behind their play brother Kanye West. Although the Carters didn’t perform it was a great night for both hip-hop and R&B. Usher, Chris Brown, Melanie Fiona, Maybach Music Group crew, Nicki Minaj and countless others brought their A game. As hard as it was to choose only three, here are our top three performances from BET Awards 2012.
3. G.O.O.D. Music swerved on everybody.
Nothing gets a crowd hype like dropping the beat to one of the hottest songs of the summer. Big Sean emerges on top of a neon lit Lamborghini to the beat of “Mercy.” Pusha T delivers his verse followed by 2 Chainz. The crowd explodes when 2 Chainz hits the stage. It’s safe to say 2 Chainz is the latest rap phenomenon. Being Kanye he skips his “Mercy” verse and appears as the beat changes to “Way Too Cold.” When he finishes his first verse, he raps an acapella freestyle before dropping the mic. It doesn’t get much better than that for an opener. Read more…
It’s like the 90s R&B era all over again in Melanie Fiona’s “This Time,” and we’re loving it. For the traditional rhythm and bluesy record expressing how much better she’d be in the relationship if she had a do-over, she teamed up with Roc Nation rapper J. Cole for what feels like the nostalgic time when R&B and hip-hop collaborations saturated the airwaves. Not to compare Fiona to another artist as she’s rightfully owning her lane, but we couldn’t help but notice the Mary J. Blige “What’s the 411?” similarities. The baseball hat and oversized jacket? Totally a great nod to MJB. Read more…
